Italy Demands Stronger EU Role in Libya
On Monday, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani called for a stronger, unified European stance on Libya, warning that the country's internal instability is now a 'European problem' requiring immediate and coordinated EU action. His remarks come just ahead of the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting, which is expected to address the escalating situation in Libya following renewed clashes in Tripoli last month. Speaking to Italian media, Tajani said that Italy is working to draw the EU's focus to Libya's fragile domestic situation. He emphasized that instability in the country threatens not only regional peace but also European security, particularly through its direct impact on migration across the Central Mediterranean route. Tajani outlined three core objectives for the EU's involvement in Libya: to issue a renewed political warning to mobilize European engagement, to strengthen support for a lasting ceasefire, and to reinitiate a political dialogue under UN guidance, led by Special Representative Hanna Tetteh. He also noted the importance of addressing growing Russian influence in Libya, especially in the context of recent military and political activities in the eastern part of the country. The foreign minister's remarks follow mounting concerns in Brussels about the resurgence of violence between factions in Tripoli and what some European diplomats describe as a deteriorating security environment. Rome has positioned itself as a lead voice in urging a comprehensive EU approach to Libya, stressing that fragmented responses will only prolong the crisis. Ahead of the EU meeting, Tajani warned that ignoring Libya's political chaos could increase irregular migration, further strain EU border operations, and fuel instability in the broader Mediterranean region. He called on all EU member states to move beyond narrow national interests and work toward a joint solution that supports Libya's path toward national reconciliation and democratic transition. Italy keeps embassies open in Iran, Israel, arranges charter flights for citizens
ROME, June 19 (Xinhua) -- Italy will maintain operations at its embassies in both Tehran and Tel Aviv amid the ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel, while organizing charter flights to assist Italian nationals wishing to leave the two countries, Antonio Tajani, minister of the foreign affairs and international cooperation, said on Thursday. "We are working to facilitate the departure from Iran and Israel of our fellow citizens who intend to leave," Tajani told Italy's ANSA news agency on the sidelines of a European Union (EU) foreign ministers' meeting in Taormina, Sicily. According to the ministry, around 20,000 Italian nationals are currently in Israel, while up to 450 are in Iran. The ministry said the special flights would be available to Italian citizens, their family members, and other EU nationals. Passengers will be responsible for the cost of travel, though the government will contribute 500 euros (573 U.S. dollars) per adult. Tajani said Italian diplomatic missions in both countries have remained operational since the outbreak of hostilities on June 13, when Israel launched a large-scale military operation against Iran. "Our embassies are operating in very difficult conditions. We are doing everything we can to ensure the safety of our fellow citizens," he said. Tajani also noted that the Italian government has received no indication that U.S. military bases in Italy have been involved in supporting Israeli military actions.

Iraq, Italy discuss escalation in the Middle East
Baghdad ( – The Iraqi Minister of Foreign Affairs, Fuad Hussein, and his Italian counterpart, Antonio Tajani, discussed on Monday the latest regional developments and the consequences of the ongoing escalation between Israel and Iran. During their phone conversation, Tajani voiced his country's concern about the region's accelerating developments, reaffirming Italy's support for Iraq's security and stability, as well as its willingness to share information and perspectives on the ongoing conflict. Tajani warned that further military escalation might have catastrophic implications both regionally and internationally, according to a statement released by the Iraqi Foreign Ministry. The Italian minister clarified that Italy is making significant efforts to get both Iran and the United States back to the negotiating table, warning that the war's expansion might have grave consequences. Hussein thanked Tajani for Italy's continued support for Iraq and its stability, underlining the necessity of ceasing any military strikes and maintaining Iraq's neutrality and distance from the war. Iraq's foreign minister emphasized that any violation of Iraqi airspace by Israel or any other party is an intolerable breach of Iraqi sovereignty and international law.

Italy urges Israel, Iran to avoid conflict escalation, return to talks
ROME, June 13 (Xinhua) -- Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani on Friday urged Israel and the Islamic Republic of Iran to avoid further conflict escalation and return to negotiations. Tajani's appeal followed a series of Israeli airstrikes overnight targeting multiple sites in Iran, including a nuclear facility, military installations, and senior military officials. In a morning phone call with Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar, Tajani "reiterated the need for an immediate return to negotiations," according to a statement from his office. He also reaffirmed the Italian government's stance that halting Israel's military operations in Gaza is "an absolute priority, given the unacceptable toll being inflicted on the Palestinian civilian population." In a subsequent conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, Tajani urged Tehran to exercise restraint and avoid military escalation, warning that any further deterioration could threaten the stability of the entire Middle East. "We must urgently return to negotiations and to the path of diplomacy," Tajani said. The Italian minister added that he would remain in close contact with officials from the United States, Oman, and Israel in an effort to "keep diplomatic channels open for the exchange of messages." According to the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), the airstrikes were a "preemptive, precise, and combined" operation targeting dozens of military facilities across Iran, including sites linked to its nuclear program. Iranian authorities condemned the strikes as a "blatant act of aggression." Supreme leader Ali Khamenei described the attack as a crime against Iran and "a declaration of war," vowing that it would be met with severe retaliation.

Italy has no indication of imminent Israeli attack on Iran
ROME (Reuters) -Italy has no indication there will be an Israeli attack on Iran in the near future, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said on Thursday. "I don't know if there will be an Israeli attack on Iran, we have no signs, apart from what the Americans have done, that there will be an attack in the immediate future", Tajani told reporters, speaking at a press conference with his German counterpart Johann Wadephul. U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday U.S. personnel were being moved out of the Middle East because it could become a dangerous place, adding that the United States would not allow Iran to have a nuclear weapon. An Italian official close to the matter said that Rome is not planning to reduce its personnel at the Italian embassy in Iraq or in other countries in the Middle East. Wadephul said that Germany will not accept Iran getting nuclear weapons. "Everyone wants to avoid any escalation. We will not stand by idly and watch Iran become nuclear-armed. That must be made clear in this situation," Wadephul said, speaking alongside Tajani.
