Perth's Lash find their hit Take Me Away back on the radar in Freaky Friday sequel

It's the song that burned bright as a teenage anthem in the early 2000s, and now Take Me Away by Perth band Lash is being introduced to a new generation of fans. The song, with it's iconic sing-a-long chorus of I don't wanna grow up/I wanna get out, was brought to global fame by the 2005 hit film Freaky Friday starring Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis. It's now being featured in the films sequel and the band behind the tune are finding themselves back in the spotlight. 'It's taking me back into a time capsule,' former member of Lash Belinda-Lee Reid says. Reid wrote Take Me Away when she was 18, but Lash were already a well established band. They formed in 1996 when the members were just 13 years old. They signed to Festival Mushroom Records in 2001 just as the teenagers were finishing high school, and they relocated to Sydney to record an album. 'We were actually sitting around a lot during the time of writing songs and we were stuck in a studio,' Reid says of when she wrote Take Me Away. 'We had a lot of teenage angst - we were angry little teenagers.' Take Me Away peaked at number 33 on the Australian Singles Chart in 2001, and would have faded into obscurity if it hadn't been picked up two years later by the producers at Disney when they were searching for music for Freaky Friday. Ionically, the band never capitalised on their biggest hit as the request from Disney came just as the band was on the verge of splitting up. 'It came at a time when our career had kinda ended,' Reid says. 'We had already dissipated as a band when they decided to use it. One of the girls wanted to start a family and that was it - the band was capooty. At first they wanted us to fly to America to re-record it and we were going to sing it, but then 9/11 happened so we didn't go. And then Kelly Osborne was supposed to sing it but then her mum, Sharon Osborne got cancer so she didn't sing it, so (US band) Pink Slip ended up recording a cover of it which became the hit.' While the Pink Slip cover was initially better known, Reid says as the years have gone by, US fans have sought out the Lash original, which now has more than 10 million streams on Spotify. Another Lash song, Beauty Queen, is also featured in the Freaky Friday film, with Reid doing the vocals. Now in her 40s, Reid says her teenage years as a rock star feel a million miles away. After Lash split up, the band went their separate ways. Guitarist Jessica Bennett is a producer at her own music studio in Melbourne, Love Shack Studios. Drummer Jac Pearson is a scientist living in Wales and singer and bass player Micaela Slayford is a mum of four and based in Fremantle. Reid is now a real estate agent in Fremantle. Lash broke up when the members were 23 and Reid says making the transition from music to the working world wasn't easy. 'Getting into the workforce when I finished my music career was one of the hardest things I've ever had to do,' Reid says. 'There was nothing on my CV. They'd say 'where have you been for the past six years?' And I would say 'well, I've been doing music.' 'It was just so hard to get into a career straight after coming out of it. It was almost like that movie, Almost Famous, where you come off the circus wagon and you just go, 'Oh my gosh, what do I do now? This is just so weird'. 'I am now with Carlin Real Estate, the Tom Carlin team, I have done Real Estate since 2008 and I love it, I love working with people, I love selling houses and I love real estate.' Reid has been invited to attend the premier of Freakier Friday in Sydney next week, where she can final reveal in the success of the song she penned when she was a teenager. 'Apparently Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis are going to be there. So hopefully I get to meet them and have a little fancy photo with them,' Reid says.

'Pink Slip' From 'Freaky Friday' Just Performed At Disneyland, And I'm A Moody Teen Again

Okay, so you know about the absolute phenomenon that is Freaky Friday. Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan play Tess and Anna Coleman, a dysfunctional mother-daughter duo who end up switching bodies in a freak incident, and are forced to live each other's lives. A damn classic. There's so much to love about this 2003 film: the story, the performances, Chad Michael Murray's terrible rendition of Baby One More Time. But another thing that makes this film truly iconic is Anna's garage band, Pink Slip, and this banger: To refresh your memory, the song is Take Me Away. Watching this film at a time when being in a band was considered the epitome of coolness was something else. We all wanted to be a part of Pink Slip, because this song goes HARD. I mean, just look at them! The song, originally by the Australian alternative/punk rock band, Lash, was turned into a cover by Christina Vidal for Freaky Friday. We know and love Christina as Maddie, Anna's BFF. Recently, a sequel to the film was announced. Freakier Friday, with our favorite duo, releases August 8th. You can check out the trailer here. Of course, Christina Vidal and Haley Hudson of Pink Slip are part of the sequel; as is our beloved Chad Michael Murray. But the new cast members— Lucille Soong, Stephen Tobolowsky, Rosalind Chao, Julia Butters, Sophia Hammons, Manny Jacinto, and Maitreyi Ramakrishnan—are incredible! On July 17th—Disneyland's 70th birthday—the cast (minus Lindsay Lohan) made an appearance at the Disneyland resort. In a vlog uploaded by YouTube channel Mouse Vibes, we see the new cast come out and greet eager fans. Addressing the crowd, Jamie Lee Curtis says: "But the thing that makes this movie truly rock, is a particular OG band..." "...so without further ado, it is my thrill to be able to introduce to you, Pink Slip!" The band sang Take Me Away as the crowd roared. I too sang along, sitting at my computer and headbanging, lyrics at the tip of my tongue like muscle memory. Mouse Vibes / Via Walt Disney Studios / Via I could watch that scene a million times and not be bored. Disneyland shared a snippet of this event on Instagram, and naturally, our millennial hearts couldn't take it. And of course, Lindsay Lohan was terribly missed. Instagram: @disneystudios Well, I'm just grateful for moments like these, because they take me back to a simpler time. The only thing I wanted back then was to look as cool as Maddie, Anna, and Peg, crushing it on the guitar or on the mic. And I can't wait for Freakier Friday to be out! Here's the full vlog by Mouse Vibes:

The 48-year-old Pirates of the Caribbean star shared several videos to his Instagram profile which showed him singing and dancing along to the Gallagher brothers biggest hits. ‌ Bloom attended the show in the VIP section alongside celebrity friends and family members of the performers, including Liam Gallagher's sons, Lennon, 25, and Gene, 24. The actor appeared to be all smiles throughout the night, showing no signs of stress despite his recent break up with Katy, who he been with since 2016. ‌ Before the show kicked off, Bloom posted a video captioned: 'Road to Oasis. Could not be more f'in excited.' In another clip, he added: 'It's gonna be karaoke all night,' as he smiled at the camera. He later cautioned his Instagram followers about the content of his stories, stating: 'If you don't like @oasis swipe on – if you wanna see me run through some of my favourite karaoke numbers for laughs here you are lol.' Bloom videoed himself singing along to several iconic Oasis tracks, including Wonderwall, Don't Look Back in Anger, and Champagne Supernova, as well as Live Forever, Take Me Away, and Half the World Away. Katy and Orlando got engaged six years ago and share daughter Daisy Dove together, who they welcomed in 2020. ‌ They released a joint statement confirming the split, which read: 'Orlando and Katy have been shifting their relationship over the past many months to focus on coparenting. "They will continue to be seen together as a family, as their shared priority is, and always will be, raising their daughter with love, stability and mutual respect.' ‌ A source close to the couple previously claimed that the breakup was amicable. The insider said: 'Katy and Orlando have split but are amicable. Katy is, of course, upset but is relieved not to have to go through another divorce, as that was the worst time in her life." ‌ Hints of emotional strain had surfaced on Bloom's Instagram earlier this month. On July 2, he shared a quote from Carl Jung: 'Loneliness does not come from having no people about one, but from being unable to communicate the things that seem important to oneself.' He also posted a telling Buddha quote days before: 'Each day is a new beginning. What we do today is what matters most.' Their shock split comes after Katy recently announced her departure from American Idol after seven seasons, reportedly to focus on new music.
