Egypt, Italy mull ways to boost AI cooperation
Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Amr Talaat discussed with Italy's Minister of Enterprises, Adolfo Urso, ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI). They held a meeting in the Italian capital, Rome, in the presence of Bassam Rady, Egypt's Ambassador to Italy, to review key developments in AI applications in both Egypt and Italy. They also followed up on discussions initiated during Urso's visit to Egypt in April 2024, which aimed to lay the foundations for constructive collaboration between the two countries in various aspects of AI and its infrastructure. During the meeting, Talaat explained the main aspects and objectives of the second edition of Egypt's national AI strategy, noting that it focuses on building digital capacities, AI governance, fostering innovation, research and development, and enhancing international cooperation in this field. For his part, Urso highlighted Italy's efforts to support startups working in the AI sector. He also outlined the features of an initiative launched by Italy during its 2024 presidency of the G7, which involves the establishment of an 'AI center for Sustainable Development'. This initiative aims to support the use of AI in advancing development efforts across the African continent. Urso expressed keenness to strengthen bilateral cooperation in AI, as well as to collaborate on a regional level to implement and achieve the goals of this initiative. He also thanked the Egyptian Ministry of Communications for nominating a representative to serve on the center's executive committee. This meeting is part of Talaat's visit to Italy, in response to an invitation from Urso. During the visit, several meetings were held with officials from Italian companies and institutions to boost cooperation and attract more investment into Egypt's communications and IT sector.

US firm VXI to create 4,000 jobs in Egypt in $135m expansion
American outsourcing firm VXI plans to create 4,000 new jobs in Egypt as part of a $135m expansion that aims to increase its local workforce to 5,000 specialists by the end of 2028, the company has announced. The expansion plans were detailed during a visit by Egypt's Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Amr Talaat, to VXI's Cairo headquarters. He was accompanied by company executives including Global Chief Operating Officer Ryan Collins and Global Chief People Officer Erika King. Talaat said the visit was part of the ministry's focus on supporting international outsourcing companies operating in Egypt. He stated that encouraging investment in the sector was a key pillar of the government's strategy to boost digital exports and solidify the country's status as a global hub for these services. 'We are encouraging investment in the outsourcing sector as one of the main pillars for strengthening Egypt's position as a preferred destination for international companies in this field,' Talaat said. He noted that Egypt is seeing continuous expansion in the number of outsourcing centres due to efforts in digital skills development and providing incentives. 'We are continuing to cooperate with companies in the outsourcing field to expand the base of human cadres trained in the matrix of skills these companies require.' VXI's global COO, Ryan Collins, said the company's growth in the country highlighted its strategic advantages. 'Our expansion in Egypt reflects the huge potential of the region, not just for the competitive cost of operations in Egypt, but as a centre teeming with multilingual talent and a strategic location that provides access to European, Middle Eastern, and African markets,' Collins said. 'The rapid growth we have achieved confirms the excellence and quality of Egyptian talent and its ability to provide distinguished and scalable customer experience solutions from Cairo.' The expansion was welcomed by the Information Technology Industry Development Agency (ITIDA). Its CEO, Ahmed El-Zaher, said the move demonstrated growing international confidence in the Egyptian economy and the strength of its outsourcing sector. He added that investments like those from VXI support the state's goals of increasing digital service exports and raising the digital economy's contribution to the gross domestic product by creating thousands of specialised jobs and transferring global operational expertise to the local market. During his tour of the facility, Talaat spoke with several young employees about their professional experiences and the skills they had acquired. He affirmed the state's commitment to enabling young people with digital skills for careers in the outsourcing sector, which he described as one of the most promising fields for professional growth. VXI was established in Egypt in December 2023 and became fully operational in March 2024. From its Cairo office, it provides services in six languages to clients in Germany, Italy, Spain, France, the Netherlands, and the United States. Ahmed Bahgat, VXI's Vice President of Operations for Egypt, Africa, and the Middle East, said: 'VXI Egypt appreciates the Egyptian government's support and its interest in the outsourcing industry, which has contributed to placing Egypt among the top three most attractive countries for foreign investment in this field.' VXI is headquartered in Los Angeles, California. Founded in 1998, it employs over 43,000 specialists in more than 43 locations across North America, Asia, Europe, and the Caribbean.

Egypt officially launches 5G, marking a leap towards digital transformation
Egypt's Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Amr Talaat, has officially announced the launch of 5G services from the Pyramids area. During the launch ceremony, the minister emphasized Egypt's commitment to adopting global technologies and keeping pace with the latest advancements, noting that it was among the first Arab nations to join the International Telecommunication Union. Talaat highlighted the pivotal role of the communications sector as a bridge for connection and a fundamental pillar for life, work, and development, asserting that technology has become a tangible reality across the globe. Mobile phone subscriptions have reached approximately 120 million, he said, with a 10 percent increase in users within a single year, a rate significantly exceeding the global average of just 2.5 percent. Talaat also noted ongoing cooperation with companies to complete service coverage across all roads and to finalize the 'Decent Life' projects related to technological services. He confirmed that efforts are underway to ensure telecommunications services will cover all parts of Egypt. The minister further noted the substantial growth in freelancing, with the number of Egyptian accounts on freelancing platforms reaching about half a million, a significant jump from just 50,000 previously. This underscores technology's impact in creating new employment opportunities. The CEO of Telecom Egypt, Mohamed Nasr, stated that the company's acquisition of the 5G license is part of investments exceeding LE35 billion this year, aimed at improving infrastructure. This investment will enable consumers to enjoy high-level digital services. These investments are designed to reduce response times, support smart cities, and provide unprecedented communication opportunities, he said. Nasr emphasized that 5G represents a revolution in telecommunications, supporting the build-out of a digital economy that strengthens Egypt's global standing. The CEO of Orange Egypt, Yasser Shaker, affirmed that the gathering of telecommunications companies to launch 5G technology from the Pyramids carries a deep symbolic meaning – signifying that Egypt's progress and development stretch from the era of the Pharaohs to the present day. The CEO of Vodafone Egypt, Mohamed Abdallah, stated that the launch of 5G technology, given Egypt's increasing digital awareness, marks a pivotal economic opportunity that will positively impact all sectors – from health to education. He assured Vodafone's commitment, as a strategic partner to the state, towards providing solutions that align with the needs of Egyptian society, supporting digital transformation, and offering advanced services that will contribute to improving community life. And the CEO of e& Egypt, Hazem Metwally, described the launch as a 'redefinition of technology uses and an opening of unprecedented horizons.' He noted that 5G will enable applications such as augmented reality, the Internet of Things, and Artificial Intelligence, reflecting a natural extension of the state's strategic vision.

Egypt mobile operators invest $2.7 bln in 5G rollout: Minister - Tech
Egypt's four mobile network operators have invested $2.7 billion in 5G spectrum and licenses since 2019, reflecting growing investor confidence in the country's digital strategy, according to Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat. Speaking at the 5G Technology Forum in Cairo on Monday, Talaat said the telecoms sector had significantly developed over the past decade and called 5G 'a qualitative leap' in how people work, live and connect. The event was organized by public policy firm Moharram & Partners and attended by ambassadors and representatives from the US, European Union (EU), Japan and major tech firms. Talaat noted Egypt's spectrum strategy was developed in line with international standards, citing the country's hosting of the World Radiocommunication Conference in 2019. Massad Boulos, senior adviser for Arab and Middle Eastern Affairs to US President Donald Trump, said the forum showed growing cooperation with Egypt and called for increased investment across Africa. "Such conferences and companies represent a fundamental pillar for expanding cooperation with our Egyptian partners, as well as our partners in the EU, Sweden, Japan, and Finland," he added. US ambassador Herro Mustafa Garg stated that 5G was about 'reliable, secure networks' supporting everything from smart cities to advanced healthcare. "This forum is not just about faster internet; it is about building reliable and secure networks that can support everything from smart cities to advanced healthcare. American companies are ready to work alongside Egypt to provide the innovative and secure infrastructure that this country deserves," Garg said. Moharram & Partners CEO Sherif El-Badawy described the forum as a strategic step toward aligning public and private efforts in Egypt's digital transformation. 'The 5G Technology Forum is more than a technical event — it's a strategic platform bringing together decision-makers, industry leaders and government institutions to chart the future of Egypt's telecommunications sector,' stated Sherif El-Badawy, ambassador and CEO of Moharram & Partners.
