James Whale shares he 'probably won't be here next week' as he enters hospice
James Whale has said that he has entered hospice care, as he recorded what he said would be his final podcast with his wife. The radio and TV host, 74, has been diagnosed with terminal cancer, revealing in 2020 that his kidney cancer had returned and spread to his brain, spine and lungs. Whale is best known for hosting The James Whale Radio Show, as well as for his work for talkSPORT and talkRADIO over the years. The Celebrity Big Brother star has been hosting the podcast Tales Of The Whales with his wife Nadine and has now said Friday's (July 25) episode would be his last, with his voice was barely a whisper during the recording. He said: 'I'm in a hospice. I probably won't be here next week. I'm fine. I've got so many drugs in me, I can't feel a thing.' He then went on to say: 'A lot of people get really upset when someone is going to die. I'm the person who's going to die and I'm quite relaxed about it.' His wife Nadine also said that he had 'perked up' since arriving at the hospice and had changed his medications so he was 'more lucid'. She admitted she has been finding it harder to come to terms with his diagnosis, but praised how 'brilliantly' he has been coping with it. The couple said they had been crying a lot, reading messages and voice notes from listeners who praised Whale's contribution to their lives. When it came time to say goodbye to their listenership for the last time, he said to his wife: 'We've had the best time together haven't we. I love you.' More Trending He added: 'Thank you for being a listener. I hope it helps in some way. Who knows what is next so I can only say au revoir.' Earlier this year, Whale announced he had stopped receiving treatment and recently marked what he called his 'last birthday', surrounded by close friends and family. He has been a fixture of British broadcasting for over 50 years, receiving an MBE in the 2024 New Year Honours for services to broadcasting and charity. He also founded the James Whale Fund for Kidney Cancer in 2006 – now Kidney Cancer UK – the country's leading charity focused on the disease. Got a story? James Whale, 74, issues heartbreaking health update amid terminal cancer battle - after admitting he 'hasn't got much longer'
James Whale has issued a heartbreaking health update in an emotional chat on his podcast with his wife Nadine amid his terminal cancer battle. The TalkTV presenter, 74, recently confessed he 'hasn't got much longer' while sharing he was told he has only 12 weeks to live. James was first diagnosed with kidney cancer in February of 2020 but despite having preventative treatment, he revealed that year that it had spread to his spine, brain and lungs. Now on week seven, James shared his health has dramatically declined as he admitted he is struggling to breath, talk, think and hear. Speaking on his podcast Tales Of The Whales, James said: 'I can't breathe, I can't think, I can't talk. 'Anyway. Good morning. Welcome to Tales of the Whales, our weekly podcast. I have terminal 5 cancer. Can you get 5?' The TalkTV presenter recently confessed he 'hasn't got much longer' while sharing he was told he has only 12 weeks to live A confused James continued: 'Could I thank everybody for getting in touch and wanting to meet up. I'm not being rude when I make it difficult to get touched up. I mean... in touch. Nadine explained: 'You're getting quite tired, so from next week, we're restricting visitors to just very close friends and family.' He added: 'The most tiring thing I found… I still can't hear very well, which is more frustrating than anything else. I've become very slow in my speech and then forgetful and everything else.' He added: 'I'm tootling along, which is all you can do really, trying to get my breathing sorted and the mark on my bum.' He humbly asked: 'People have to go through a lot worse, don't they? Do they?' James concluded: 'Anyway. I don't feel I can go on much more... The other thing is, my energy levels have gone completely. 'So I wish everybody well, and let us hope we go through these phases as quickly as we can.' Last week, heartbreaking pictures emerged of James giving the 'most compelling' interview of his career. James filmed the interview with Nigel Farage as a TalkTV producer shared snaps ahead of it being released. In the images James looked frail amid his illness and had a yellow blanket over his knees. He penned on X: 'After 50 years in broadcasting, Whaley delivers one of the most compelling and profound conversations of his career. 'A masterclass in asking the right questions. @THEJamesWhale @Nigel_Farage @MitchellCMM.' Under another image of the interview set up he wrote: 'Filming Whaley's last interview with Nigel Farage. The bravest man I know. A legend and a friend.' He also appeared in an image with his co-host on Talk TV Ash Gould. The visibly emotional star added: 'Happy Birthday, mate. Happy Birthday to all of you who have put your lives where you have '360 years ago, the Royal Marines were founded. Happy Birthday to you all.' Reflecting on his mortality, James said: 'It's alright, I'm an old git, [I'm] 74. I'm still on the TV and radio but not for much longer. I love you all, guys.' Fans were quick to send supportive messages to James in the comments section of the video, which was posted to Twitter/X, thanking him for his work as a presenter.
