Red Sox Predicted to Reunite With Chris Sale After Trade Update

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. After stringing together 10 wins in a row just before the All-Star break, the Boston Red Sox might have shifted the entire narrative of their season. The front office publicly butted heads with franchise slugger Rafael Devers and then opted to trade him away to the San Francisco Giants, which seemed to save a white flag on their near-term future. But the team might be in a better position without Devers and could be looking to add some win-now pieces at the upcoming trade deadline. If that's the case, it seems pretty likely the Red Sox will target reinforcement for the rotation. Outside of Garrett Crochet, the starting staff has struggled and would need another legitimate frontline option to advance in the playoffs. With that in mind, Talkin' Baseball's Jake Storiale predicted the team would reunite with veteran pitcher Chris Sale. TAMPA, FLORIDA - APRIL 13: Chris Sale #51 of the Atlanta Braves looks on prior to a game against the Tampa Bay Rays at George M. Steinbrenner Field on April 13, 2025 in Tampa, Florida.... (Photo by) More Aguilar/Getty "Chris Sale back to Boston," Storiale projected in a recent trade deadline segment for the channel. "He's got an option for next year, the Red Sox need high-leverage pitching. ... Chris Sale is going back to Boston." On paper, Storiale's projection has some merit. Sale would definitely fill the Red Sox's biggest need, as he's got a strong 2.52 ERA in 15 starts so far this season and should return from the injured list in August. And the team has familiarity with him, as he pitched for the Red Sox for six seasons. Plus, his contract situation could make him more than just a half-year rental for a team that acquires him. But any trade prediction involving Sale would ignore reports that the Braves have no intention of moving any player with controllability beyond this season. The latest trade update on Sale saw FanSided's Robert Murray report that Sale is off the trade block as the Braves look to keep its core intact. If that changes in the next few days, though, a reunion with the Red Sox could make sense. More MLB: Cubs Legend Responds to Health 'Fight' With Message to Fans

Get Starting Point A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Enter Email Sign Up 'The story that he is selling doesn't make sense,' Talkin said in Manhattan criminal court as the defendants were formally arraigned. Advertisement Woeltz's lawyer Wayne Gosnell added that witnesses told him the accuser came and went as he pleased from the upscale town house where he says he was held — going to church, clubs and dinners. The accuser, a 28-year-old Italian national, has not been named by officials. Prosecutors say the defendants have known him personally for years. In court Wednesday, Assistant District Attorney Sarah Khan argued that someone who supports the defendants was selectively leaking videos to present a counternarrative of the events. In reality, she said, the accuser was constantly watched, was not permitted to leave the house without being guarded and was subjected to violence, including being pistol whipped and cut with a small chain saw. Advertisement The defendants also took photos of the man various poses and acts to create the impression that he was not being held against his will, Khan said. Police searching the town house found evidence corroborating his story, including a loaded pistol, chain saw and other instruments purportedly used to torture him. They also located photographs, including one where the defendants point a gun to the accuser's head, another where the accuser is tied to wheelchair, and still another showing the accuser being set on fire. When prodded by the judge, Khan explained that the man didn't actually sustain any burn injuries because the defendants would quickly douse the flames, sometimes by urinating on him. What's more, she said, prosecutors believe this is not the first time the defendants have held a person against their will. They are aware of two other potential victims in two other locations, according to Khan. Lawyers for the two men, meanwhile, sought their release on $1 million bail and home confinement with their parents. They rejected suggestions from prosecutors that their clients could flee the country. 'He's so far from a flight risk here. He's ready to fight this case. He's not going anywhere,' Talkin said of Duplessie. The two appeared handcuffed in prison uniforms and didn't speak in court other than to formally enter their pleas. They are charged with kidnapping, assault, unlawful imprisonment and criminal possession of a weapon and face up to life in prison if convicted. Prosecutors say on May 6, the two men lured the victim to a town house in Manhattan's posh SoHo neighborhood by threatening to kill his family. Advertisement The man said the two investors tormented him with electrical wires, forced him to smoke from a crack pipe and at one point dangled him from a staircase five stories high. The man said he eventually agreed to hand over his computer password, then managed to flee as his captors went to retrieve the device. Khan said Wednesday that last month's kidnapping was at least the third instance in which the two had convinced the man to meet them in person, only to threaten him and take his electronic devices in order to obtain his cryptocurrency. To date, she said, he hasn't received his money or electronic devices back.

NEW YORK (AP) — A man who says he was kidnapped by two crypto investors for his Bitcoin was seen in photos and videos 'laughing and smiling' and moving about Manhattan freely during the days he claimed he was held captive and tortured, lawyers for the two suspects said in court Wednesday. William Duplessie and John Woeltz pleaded not guilty and were ordered held in custody until their next court date on July 15. Prosecutors argue the man was clearly in distress because he ran barefoot to the nearest police officer after escaping 17 days in captivity. However, Duplessie's lawyer said Wednesday that videos show the accuser participating in group sex and smoking crack cocaine while 'laughing and smiling the whole time.' This shows that his story about being in distress or held against his will 'is entirely false,' Sam Talkin said. In other photos, the accuser is seen visiting an eyeglass store with one of the defendants, Talkin said, noting he could have fled or sought help at any time. 'The story that he is selling doesn't make sense,' Talkin said in Manhattan criminal court as the defendants were formally arraigned. Woeltz's lawyer Wayne Gosnell added that witnesses told him the accuser came and went as he pleased from the upscale townhouse where he says he was held — going to church, clubs and dinners. The accuser, a 28-year-old Italian national, has not been named by officials. Prosecutors say the defendants knew him personally. Prosecutor Sarah Khan argued that someone who supports the defendants was selectively leaking videos to present a counternarrative of the events. 'Victims of abuse are not always going to act the way that we expect them to,' Khan said, adding that prosecutors have other photos showing the accuser being set on fire. When prodded by the judge, she explained that he didn't actually sustain any burn injuries because the defendants would quickly douse the flames, sometimes by urinating on him. Prosecutors believe this is not the first time the defendants have held a person against their will, she said. They're aware of two other potential victims in two other locations. Khan argued that holding the two men in custody 'remains the only option' because they're both flight risks. Their lawyers had sought their release on $1 million bail and home confinement with their parents. The two face up to life in prison if convicted, she said. Duplessie, 32, and Woeltz, 37, appeared handcuffed in prison uniforms and didn't speak in court other than to formally enter their pleas. They face charges of kidnapping, assault, unlawful imprisonment and criminal possession of a weapon. Prosecutors say on May 6, the two men lured the victim to a townhouse in Manhattan's posh SoHo neighborhood by threatening to kill his family. The man said the two investors tormented him with electrical wires, forced him to smoke from a crack pipe and at one point dangled him from a staircase five stories high. The man said he eventually agreed to hand over his computer password, then managed to flee as his captors went to retrieve the device. Woeltz has described himself in interviews as a blockchain investor who spent time in Silicon Valley before returning to Kentucky's burgeoning crypto-mining industry. Duplessie is listed as a founder or investor at various blockchain-based companies. New York City police are also investigating two detectives who worked security at the townhouse where the man says he was tortured. The officers have been placed on modified leave pending the outcome of the inquiry, although their lawyer has said there's no indication either officer witnessed any of the alleged criminal activity. ___ Follow Philip Marcelo on X: @philmarcelo.

Neil Young renews attacks on Trump, calls the U.S. government ‘out of control'

Neil Young is once again taking shots at U.S. President Donald Trump , calling the American government 'out of control' and suggesting that the country is at risk of 'martial law' in a statement shared on his website this week . 'Our country and our way of life, that which our fathers and theirs fought for, is now threatened by our government,' Young declared in a post titled 'WAKE UP AMERICA,' though he did not mention any government policy in particular. 'Our government is out of control, not standing for us.' Young is set to embark on a world tour with his new band the Chrome Hearts later this month. In his post, he said that his shows will not be political, but also acknowledged the fraught political situation in the U.S. 'When I tour the USA this summer, if there is not martial law by then which would make it impossible, let's all come together and stand for American values,' Young's statement said. However, the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer did appear to offer Trump an olive branch of sorts: 'President Trump, you are invited. Come and hear our music just as you did for decades,' Young wrote, making reference to the fact that the president was a self-proclaimed fan before their relationship deteriorated in recent years. Last month, Young also came to the defence of Bruce Springsteen, another rock star who has drawn the ire of Trump in recent weeks for publicly criticizing the administration. 'Bruce and thousands of musicians think you are ruining America,' Young wrote on his website on May 20 in a post titled 'TRUMP!!!' 'You worry about that instead of the dyin' kids in Gaza . That's your problem.' Young, 79, was born in Canada, but has lived south of the border for decades (he officially became a U.S. citizen in 2020 ). As an artist and an activist, Young has never shied away from politics and has thrown constant barbs at Trump since he launched his political career in the mid-2010s. In 2015, Young spoke out against Trump's use of the 1990 single 'Rockin' in the Free World,' after the song accompanied Trump's announcement of his presidential campaign. In 2020, Young sued Trump's re-election campaign for copyright infringement , saying he doesn't want his music used as a theme song for a 'divisive un-American campaign of ignorance and hate.' After Trump was elected for the first time, Young penned an open letter calling Trump a 'disgrace' and 'the worst president in the history of our great country.' Young has also been a vocal critic of Trump's tariffs targeting Canada and his threats of annexation. In April, he attended a protest against Trump's threats in Los Angeles, where he was spotted holding up a sign that read, 'HANDS OFF CANADA.' Neil Young attends a protest on April 4, 2025. Earlier this year, Young announced that he is releasing a new protest album with a newly assembled band called the Chrome Hearts, which includes guitarist Micah Nelson, bassist Corey McCormick, drummer Anthony Logerfo and organist Spooner Oldham. Titled 'Talkin to the Trees,' the album's first single is about electric cars, and takes a shot at Tesla CEO and Trump ally Elon Musk . Young and the Chrome Hearts will perform in Toronto at the Budweiser Stage on Aug. 17.
