USA TODAY Sports/MMA Junkie rankings, July 15: Welcome to the chart, Valter Walker

The UFC touched down in "Music City" with heavyweights at the top of the bill. Derrick Lewis took out the unbeaten Tallison Teixeira in 35 seconds – though it came with some controversy for a supposed early stoppage. What effect did that have on Lewis' spot in the heavyweight top 15? One heavyweight who has made a quick impact is Valter Walker. His third straight first-round UFC stoppage win – and third straight by heel hook, a new record – has him onto the chart for the first time and no doubt looking to make a fast climb. Check out all the latest moves in the USA TODAY Sports/MMA Junkie MMA rankings.

What We Saw, Heard, And Felt At UFC Nashville

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE - JULY 12: (R-L) Derrick Lewis punches Tallison Teixeira of Brazil in a ... More heavyweight fight during the UFC Fight Night event at Bridgestone Arena on July 12, 2025 in Nashville, Tennessee. (Photo by Jeff Bottari/Zuffa LLC) UFC Nashville delivered knockouts, chaos, controversy, and a crowd that reminded us why stateside UFC Fight Nights are good for the sport. From the early prelims to Derrick Lewis' main event moment, the card was a snapshot of what makes Fight Nights on U.S. soil arguably the purest presentation of MMA. Here's what we saw, heard, and what fans and media in attendance felt inside Bridgestone Arena. What We Saw at UFC Nashville Lewis extended his own record for KOs in the UFC with a first-round finish of Tallison Teixeira, though it didn't come without controversy (more on that later). Lewis' power is undeniable, and because of it, he has a chance against any opponent. Here is a look at the finish. Lewis D/X chopped and launched imaginary arrows at Teixeira immediately after the finish. He also removed his shorts and mooned the crowd. We also saw Stephen 'Wonderboy' Thompson suffer one of the nastiest gashes on his leg that you'll ever see during his co-main event clash with Gabriel Bonfim. I know this is the 'see' portion, but rather than simply embedding it here, I'll give you the option to look at this image if you can stomach it. It was ugly, but what was most amazing was Thompson's toughness. Not only did the 43-year-old veteran fight on, he didn't even stop throwing kicks with the lacerated leg. More fight during the UFC Fight Night event at Bridgestone Arena on July 12, 2025 in Nashville, Tennessee. (Photo by Jeff Bottari/Zuffa LLC) Unbelievable. Nate Landwehr is a walking Fight of the Night bonus, and he has the ability to pull anyone into his world. He did that on Saturday but was reduced to rubble in the process as Morgan Charriere proved to be too athletic and explosive for Landwehr. Charriere added a devastating finish to his highlight reel to go with his share of the Fight of the Night bonus both fighters earned. Here is the insane finish in the third the third fight in a row, Walker has defeated an opponent by heel hook. I've been covering MMA for nearly 20 years and I cannot recall another fighter with back-to-back wins by heel hook—let alone three straight. Here's his latest heel capture. It's an amazing run and should lead to Walker receiving an official ranking in the heavyweight division this week. If Fatima Kline was looking for a standout performance with a memorable moment, she got it on Saturday and also set the tone for the evening with her vicious head-kick KO win over Melissa Martinez. In case you missed it, it was a Performance of the Night winner. What We Heard at UFC Nashville The crowd in Nashville was electric. So much so that the city should be on the UFC's radar to visit twice a year, and the top non-titleholding American fighters should be in the main and co-main events. NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE - JULY 12: A general view of the Octagon during the UFC Fight Night event at ... More Bridgestone Arena on July 12, 2025 in Nashville, Tennessee. (Photo by Jeff Bottari/Zuffa LLC) The UFC has been running a program featuring artists' music during pay-per-views and Fight Nights and I don't think it's getting enough UFC Nashville, the broadcast played A Thousand Tons, a track from a metal band called Chained Saint, several times. If you're unaware of the band and the track, here's a look at the lyric video. The opening lyrics of the song say, 'you ought to know by now that there's no stopping us.' That line makes the song wildly appropriate as a theme for an event with eight stoppage wins—many that were pretty devastating. The band has several songs on their album Blindside that seem like a perfect fit as entrance music for a WWE Superstar. All in all, it was a strong pioneer and former women's flyweight title challenger Lauren Murphy retired in the Octagon following a unanimous decision loss to Eduarda Moura. Murphy addressed the crowd with a heartfelt message after the fight as she laid her gloves in the center of the Octagon. She thanked herself during the Octagon interview. The 41-year-old walked away from the UFC with a 16-7 record. What We Felt During and After UFC Nashville A lot of the talk after the co-main event was about Wonderboy's gashed leg, but should we have talked more about that decision going Bonfim's way? There's a good argument to be made that Wonderboy won the second and third rounds. Ashx_MMA put together a solid breakdown explaining why he scored the fight for Wonderboy. He definitely took the second, as he nearly knocked the talented Brazilian out with a bananas head kick. Wonderboy didn't complain—but then again, he never does. I'm not sure about this one. I had it for Wonderboy too. Lewis won in the main event via TKO, but many—including me—believe referee Jason Herzog stopped the fight prematurely. UFC President Dana White also felt the stoppage was 'a little fast.' Teixeira is a talented 25-year-old heavyweight. He was hurt, but I thought he got back to his feet pretty quickly. Herzog seemed to call it after Teixeira mistakenly hit him during the stand-up. In case you missed it, here are the results from the event. UFC Nashville Results

Bold UFC Nashville predictions: Will it be a bad night in Music City for ‘Black Beast'?

After a week away for a holiday break, the top MMA promotion in the world is back with UFC Nashville this Saturday night. The card takes place at Music City's Bridgestone Arena and features several long-time Octagon stars. In the headliner, fan-favorite Derrick Lewis returns to action for the first time in over a year when he takes on Brazilian slugger Tallison Teixeira. In the co-main event, welterweight great Stephen Thompson battles 15-years-younger prospect Gabriel Bonfim. Advertisement Ahead of tonight's main card — which kicks off at 9 PM ET on ESPN and ESPN+ — we make some bold predictions for the top matchups at UFC Nashville. Related: UFC tonight – Get a look at the complete UFC Nashville card and the upcoming UFC schedule Derrick Lewis (+240) vs. Tallison Teixeira (-298) Credit: Jeff Le-Imagn Images Derrick Lewis will go down as one of the most beloved and dangerous heavyweights in UFC history. Yet, since 2021, he has been very inconsistent as he's lost five of his last nine. Furthermore, he has had to pull out of a couple of fights with health issues. And he already has a history of back problems. At 40, he is still in prime years for a heavyweight, but it also feels like 'Black Beast's' best days are behind him. Advertisement On Saturday night, Lewis will have a huge experience advantage over the 8-0 Teixeira. But the rising prospect has a rare height and reach advantage over him. Plus, he is young, fast, and powerful. Five years ago, the American crushes 'Xicão.' But in 2025, this feels like a tough matchup for the aging veteran. Prediction: Teixeira by TKO, Round 2 Stephen Thompson (+330) vs. Gabriel Bonfim (-425) Credit: Jeff Swinger-Imagn Images Thompson is a future Hall of Famer. While he never won UFC gold, he was in many fun fights and was a tough puzzle to solve in his prime. But at 42 years old and coming off two knockout losses, he really should be retired. But in classic UFC style, the company is using his name value to try and build a new star in Bonfim. Advertisement The Brazilian is 15 years younger and brings an outstanding ground game. If this were eight years ago, Thompson keeps the distance, stuffs the takedowns, and picks Bonfim apart. However, he has slowed down more than enough to get grounded by his foe and forced to tap on Saturday. Prediction: Bonfim by submission, Round 1 Calvin Kattar (+105) vs. Steve Garcia (-125) Credit: Scott Wachter-Imagn Images UFC Nashville has a very obvious theme throughout. Veteran Octagon stars being put in matches against young, dangerous fighters with something to prove. Calvin Kattar's clash with Steve Garcia is another example of that. 'The Boston Finisher' has been a top 15 mainstay for much of the last five years. But Father Time has caught up with the featherweight. Advertisement He has lost four straight and four of his last five. However, much of it has come to a high level of competition. While Garcia is not a former champion or title challenger, he is a dangerous knockout puncher. Things could easily go bad for Kattar on Saturday. But, expect him to fight cautiously and outpoint Garcia. Prediction: Kattar by unanimous decision Nate Landwehr (+210) vs. Morgan Charrière (-258) Credit: Per Haljestam-Imagn Images Nate Landweher vs. Morgan Charriere has Fight of the Night potential. Both are more than willing to stand up and go to war. Especially the American. The Frenchman is a bit more polished than his foe, and his youth is a key bonus because he will be the faster fighter. Look for him to use that advantage and score a late finish. Advertisement Prediction: Charriere by TKO, Round 3 Vitor Petrino (-700) vs. Austen Lane (+500) Credit: Nathan Ray Seebeck-Imagn Images Another fight that is set up not to go the distance is the light heavyweight clash between Vitor Petrino and Austen Lane. The pair has 18 knockouts in their 24 combined wins, and they have not fared well in the Octagon in their recent outings. Both could very well be fighting for their jobs at UFC Nashville. Hopefully, that does not lead to an overly cautious approach by each man. If they fight like they usually do, expect fireworks and a knockout finish. Prediction: Petrino by KO, Round 1 Junior Tafa (-180) vs. Tuco Tokkos (+150) Credit: Gary A. Vasquez-Imagn Images Junior Tafa and Tuco Tokkos are not going to be fighting for heavyweight gold one day. But most fighters on the UFC roster won't. These two big men are in the company to put on a show and try to take their opponents' heads off. Tafa and Tokkos will both look to meet that standard, and the fight is one of the biggest pick 'ems on the card. Considering their recent history, Tafa should be able to be the last man standing. Monster Energy's Derrick Lewis Knocks out Tallison Teixeira In 35 Seconds at UFC Fight Night in Nashville

40-Year-Old from New Orleans, Louisiana Shuts Down Heavyweight Fight with Round 1 K.O., Extends Career UFC Record for Knockout Victories at 16 Knockouts NASHVILLE, Tenn., July 13, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Dominant victory for the "Knockout King"! Monster Energy congratulates MMA athlete Derrick Lewis on defeating Tallison Teixeira in the main event fight at UFC Fight Night in Nashville on Saturday night. In the Heavyweight division bout, the 40-year-old from New Orleans, Louisiana, made quick work of his opponent and secured the knockout within 35 seconds of Round 1. UFC Fight Night: Lewis vs Teixeira was contested in front of a live crowd of more than 17,000 spectators inside sold-out Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee. Featuring six fights on the Main Card, the event was broadcast live on the ESPN+ platform. Monster Energy's Derrick Lewis (29-12) came to Nashville looking to continue his win streak after most recently beating Rodrigo Nascimento in the main event battle at UFC Fight Night in St. Louis, Missouri, in May 2024. Lewis' opponent, 25-year-old Tallison Teixeira (8-1) from Vitória da Conquista, Brazil, wanted to extend his two-win streak after knocking out Justin Tafa in his UFC debut in February 2025 and earning the Performance of the Night bonus. But when it comes to facing a UFC icon like Lewis, the newcomer faced the ultimate test… When both fighters collided in the Octagon inside Bridgestone Arena, the action instantly hit overdrive. In a furious opening sequence, Lewis connected a heavy body kick to Teixeira's chest but absorbed a left jab to the face that seemed to impact his vision. But when Teixeira closed in to capitalize on the disadvantage, Lewis stood his ground and responded with a barrage of heavy punches. And when a heavy left swing connected to the chin, it was 'lights out' as Teixeira instantly hit the canvas. After a brief ground-and-pound assault, with Teixeira struggling to get back on his feet, Referee Jason Herzog ended the fight at 35 seconds with Lewis the clear winner by technical knockout. With his 42nd professional fight in the books, Lewis now has earned 24 wins by knockout or technical knockout, including 16 knockouts in the UFC. Asked about his approach in Nashville, Monster Energy's Lewis said: "I know if I throw anything at anybody, no matter what it is, I know that they're going to go down!" What's next for Lewis? After the dominant performance, a title fight against undisputed division champion Tom Aspinall may be in the cards. Stay tuned for more from Lewis!
