North Shore Rescue brings in helicopter to assist injured teen

An injured hiker needed some help from above after hurting her leg on a steep trail in the West Vancouver backcountry Sunday afternoon. North Shore Rescue received a call just before noon Sunday from B.C. Ambulance reporting a 15-year-old teenager sprained her left ankle after a slip on a large rock hiking up to St. Mark's Summit along the Howe Sound Crest Trail in Cypress Provincial Park. Volunteers used a Talon helicopter to find the teen on the trail, where she was stranded with her mother and relatives. 'It was sore enough that she wasn't able to walk on it, so it's best not to aggravate it,' said search manager Don Jardine. 'If you're feeling that much pain, it's better to call for help.' After rescue crews found the injured hiker, two volunteers hoisted down to place her into the aircraft. From there, crews flew to the search and rescue team's Capilano Gate station so an ambulance could take her to Lions Gate Hospital. St. Mark's Summit is one of the viewpoints along the Howe Sound Trail, a 26-kilometre hike spanning from Cypress Bowl to Porteau Cove above the Sea to Sky Highway. 'It's easy to have a slip, it's fairly steep,' Jardine said. 'There's still a little bit of snow in places, and because it's melting, there's a bit of mud. There's lots of slippery roots and rocks.' In a social media post , the search and rescue team said Sunday's call highlights how quickly plans can change in the backcountry. Jardine urged people to be careful with their footing while hiking, going with a group and bringing equipment like hiking poles. 'I find hiking poles are really advantageous because you're getting four points of contact rather than just two, and if you do slip, they can stop you from twisting your ankle,' he said. 'It's a popular hike, there are a lot of people going there and it can get quite hot in the summer,' Jardine added. 'So go early and bring lots of water.' North Shore Rescue also shared in the post other recent calls they have responded to, including a tourist stuck near Eagle Bluffs after running out of water and trying to navigate steep terrain with a phone map, a solo hiker who slipped along the BCMC Trail on Grouse Mountain , a helicopter hoist operation for four teenagers on Mount Fromme who become stranded in steep terrain after leaving the trail trying to descend to Mountain Highway, and a fatal motor vehicle crash near Norrish Creek with an overnight helicopter search . After the recent calls, the search and rescue team offered a number of safety tips such as using backcountry specific apps like Gaia or AllTrails and downloading the map ahead of time, as Google Maps is not always reliable in remote terrain. Also if a hiker leaves the trail, do not keep heading downhill, but return to known ground if safe. Abby Luciano is the Indigenous and civic affairs reporter for the North Shore News. ‘Literal hell': Mum calls for inquest after baby's mystery death

A mother says she has been living in 'hell' since the unexplained death of her baby daughter in 2019, and will no longer be silent while waiting for answers. Six years later, Kayla Hehir has still not even received a death certificate for eight-month-old Talon. There has been no coronial inquest held or any outcome to an ongoing homicide investigation. After staying patient so long, Ms Hehir has decided to finally speak out to say she feels that 'no one cares' how the little girl came to be found unresponsive in their Melbourne home. 'I felt like I had to be quiet so justice can take its course,' she told 'But justice isn't taking its course at all. 'It's (the case) sitting there and it's just ridiculous.' Do you know more? Email: Ms Hehir said she had breastfed Talon overnight on June 20, 2019. When she woke in the morning at their Frankston home, Ms Hehir knew something was wrong. She came into the loungeroom and saw Talon on the lounge: 'She just didn't look right. 'I don't even know how to explain it. She just did not look right. 'And I picked her up and she wasn't right. It was like kind of limp, but stiff. 'And I started panicking. I started screaming.' The girl was rushed to Monash Children's Hospital where doctors were unable to save Talon's life. Ms Hehir described the shock of how that day unfolded and the devastating news doctors relayed to her: 'It happened so quick and so slow at the same time. 'And even when we were taking her off life support, for some stupid reason, I still thought she was going to be okay.' Victoria Police have confirmed homicide detectives were still investigating the circumstances around Talon's death, which recently past its sixth anniversary. Ms Hehir said she was in contact with police but there had largely been 'silence' from the authorities, robbing her and Talon's siblings of closure or justice. 'People don't realise that, they will say, 'oh, it was six years ago'. But it's every day,' Ms Hehir said. 'I see those moments all the time, like they just happened. 'We can't just keep sitting here like this, it's been a literal hell.' She has now reached out to Sherele Moody, who runs the Australian Femicide Watch and the Red Heart Campaign, to petition authorities and state government ministers to push the case forward. They are calling for a coroner to be appointed and for a reward to be offered for information about the case. Ms Moody told she did not understand how Talon's death was allowed to have 'flown under the radar' for so many years. 'Obviously, for a mum losing her baby, that is really one of the worst things that can happen to a human being,' she said. Ms Moody's petition for an inquest and reward for information about Talon's death has gained more than 2500 signatures. In a statement, Victoria Police said detectives from the Homicide Squad were investigating the death of a baby girl in Frankston in 2019. 'Emergency services were called to a residential property on 20 June after the eight-month-old was found unconscious. 'She was conveyed to hospital where she subsequently passed away. 'The circumstances surrounding the death are still to be determined and the investigation remains ongoing.' Ms Hehir said that since going public she had been dealing with the pain of seeing pictures of her little girl popping up on social media – but she hoped it would be worth it. 'I'm feeling hopefully that maybe people will listen.'

Benin's Talon says ECOWAS in need of urgent reform

ABUJA, Nigeria (AFP) -- Benin President Patrice Talon said on Saturday that the west African regional bloc is in trouble, citing stalled infrastructure projects and weak trade links as reasons for reform. He spoke at a regional economic summit of west African nations in Abuja ahead of a routine gathering of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). "ECOWAS is a perfect example of regional integration. Unfortunately, our ECOWAS is in crisis right now," he was quoted as saying in a statement by the Nigerian presidency. Talon singled out the 678-kilometer West African Gas Pipeline through Benin and Togo as a key example of regional dysfunction, blaming delays and poor coordination for its failure to deliver energy across borders. "This failure of regional cooperation wastes resources and undermines integration," he said, adding that Benin now imports gas from Qatar to meet local demand. "It is ridiculous." He also raised concerns over the West African Power Pool, which was designed to link national electricity grids in the region. Despite years of investment, the project is underperforming. "Unless we act decisively, I'm not confident it ever will," Talon said. Talon's remarks aligned with those of Nigeria's President Bola Tinubu, who said intra-regional trade in west Africa remains below 10 percent. "This low trade is not due to a failure of will but a coordination failure," Tinubu said. "The global economy will not wait for west Africa to get its act together, and neither should we." Talon also said that US President Donald Trump's "trade war" with the rest of the world "should be a wake-up call for all of us." The United States is "giving us a very important lesson -- they are fighting for their own interests," he added.

Copper-nickel stock spikes after verifying world-class discovery

Talon Metals stock (TSX:TLO) added over 40 per cent after delivering new high-grade intercepts from its majority-owned and operated Tamarack nickel-copper-cobalt project in Minnesota The project, under joint venture with Rio Tinto, houses a resource estimated at 148,000 tons of nickel indicated and 70,000 tons of nickel inferred Talon Metals stock has added 50 per cent year-over-year and 92.86 per cent since 2020 Talon Metals stock (TSX:TLO) added over 40 per cent after delivering new high-grade intercepts from its majority-owned and operated Tamarack nickel-copper-cobalt project in Minnesota. The project, under joint venture with Rio Tinto, houses an estimated resource of 148,000 tons of nickel indicated and 70,000 tons of nickel inferred. Assays from the previously announced massive sulphide intercepts in drill hole 25TK0563 came in at 34.9 metres grading 28.88 per cent nickel equivalent (NiEq) or 57.76 per cent copper equivalent (CuEq). This from a total reported intercept of 47.33 metres at 21.40 per cent NiEq or 42.79 per cent CuEq. Select assays from drill hole 25TK0563 (Source: Talon Metals) Management is optimistic about pending assays form the drill hole, which is a 68-metre eastern step-out from 16TK0250, the highest-grade drill hole in project history. Talon is also announcing the extension of the exclusivity period under its agreement with Lundin Mining for the latter to potentially acquire up to 70 per cent of its Boulderdash and Roland exploration targets, which are near Lundin's producing Eagle nickel-copper mine. Leadership insights 'Intercepts of this scale and grade are extremely rare, and they don't come without deep technical understanding. Our in-house geophysics team helped vector us into this target, and our in-house drill team executed it flawlessly. This result validates both the geology at Tamarack and the integrated approach we've taken to exploration. Tamarack continues to exceed expectations and has raised the bar as to what high-grade means,' Brian Goldner, Talon Metals' chief exploration and operations officer, said in a statement. 'A 34.9-metre intercept grading 28.88 per cent nickel equivalent is truly world-class. Even when you compare it to historical data from globally significant nickel deposits, intercepts like this are few and far between. From a geologic perspective, this is a bonanza result by any standard,' commented Dean Rossell, Talon's chief geologist credited with the discovery of Tamarack, Eagle and Boulderdash. 'As the United States accelerates efforts to secure domestic critical mineral supply chains for energy security and national defense, Tamarack stands out as a rare and essential piece of the puzzle. These assay results not only underscore the global significance of our deposit, but also its strategic importance to America's energy future,' added Henri van Rooyen, Talon's chief executive officer. Talon Metals is a nickel and copper explorer active in the United States. Talon Metals stock (TSX:TLO) is up by 42.11 per cent trading at C$0.27 as of 11:11 am ET. The stock has added 50 per cent year-over-year and 92.86 per cent since 2020. Join the discussion: Find out what everybody's saying about this copper and nickel mining stock on the Talon Metals Corp.
