Parandur airport project: Landowners get notice to attend meeting on July 16

CHENNAI: The state government is continuing with its push for the greenfield airport project in Parandur as several landowners in 13 villages, except Ekanapuram, have reportedly received notices directing them to attend the negotiating committee meeting on July 16 at the office of special district revenue officer (land acquisition). The notices were issued under Section 7(2) of the Tamil Nadu Acquisition of Land for Industrial Purposes Act, 1997, to determine the value of land proposed to be acquired. The summons have been issued to landowners who filed objections to the initial land acquisition notices. As per the G.O. issued last month by V Arun Roy, secretary of industries, investment promotion and commerce department, the government has directed the land acquisition officers to determine the compensation amount, where the landowners are not willing to accept the fixed compensation rates. 'This meeting is in accordance with the law and terms of references stipulated in the G.O,' a senior official in the Kancheepuram district administration said. While it was not revealed how many landowners were issued with summons for the July 16 meeting, sources claimed that most people who got summons were not the local residents but they owned land. For instance, names and addresses in few notices reviewed by TNIE, showed they were all residents of Chennai. G Subramani, secretary of Ekanapuram village residents and farmers welfare federation, told TNIE, 'None of the Ekanapuram landowners received notices. The government is trying to create momentum and narrative by luring outsiders. To condemn this action, we have called a meeting on July 15, where people from all the villages are expected to participate.' Recently, the government registered 17.52 acres belonging to 19 landowners from five villages in the name of Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation after successful negotiation and payment of Rs 9.22 crore as compensation.

In first deal, 17.52 acres of land bought for Parandur airport

CHENNAI: The acquisition of the first batch of land parcels for the proposed greenfield airport at Parandur has been completed. A total of 19 landowners, who government officials said included eight locals and 11 non-locals from five villages, transferred 17.52 acres of their land to the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (TIDCO) on Wednesday. At a direct negotiation meeting chaired by the Kancheepuram District Collector, a total compensation of Rs 9.22 crore was credited to the owners' bank accounts for transferring the land. The move comes days after the Tamil Nadu government notified the compensation package for acquiring land for Chennai's second airport. The state has approved rates varying from Rs 35 lakh to Rs 2.58 crore per acre based on Guideline Value (GLV), prevailing market rate, and private negotiation with landowners. A total of 3,774.1 acres of patta land and 1,972.17 acres of government land are set to be acquired for the project.

Land acquisition takes off for Chennai's second airport at Parandur

The Tamil Nadu government began the acquisition of land for Chennai's second airport at Parandur in Kancheepuram district as the registration process commenced on Wednesday. According to a press release, 19 landowners from five villages, including Parandur, Podavur, Nelvoy, Valathur, and Akkamapuram had participated in a consultative meeting with the Kancheepuram Collector, and agreed to the land acquisition. Subsequently, a total of 17.52 acres of land, worth ₹9.22 crore, were registered with the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation, which is the executing agency for the project. The district administration took steps to transfer the compensation to the landowners' bank accounts by Wednesday, the press release said. The move follows a Government Order issued on June 25 regarding the amount of compensation for the landowners in 19 villages. 'Though the registration process is over, we will not take possession of the land immediately. The landowners can hold on to their land till they complete harvesting their crops. Several villagers, except those from Ekanapuram, seem willing to part with the land,' an official said. As far as acquisition of houses was concerned, officials said it would take more time. This was because houses on alternative sites had to be built and readied for occupation. Only then, the acquisition of houses would begin. Meanwhile, the Parandur Airport Project Protestors Committee alleged in a statement that the government made travel and food arrangements for some landowners and coerced them into registering their land for the project.
