Expedite ongoing civic works, relay road dug up before NE monsoon: Minister
The ongoing projects to provide water supply, sewer infrastructure and stormwater drains in various municipal corporations and local bodies across the State must be expedited. Roads dug up for these works must be relaid before the onset of the Northeast monsoon, Municipal Administration Minister said here on Friday. Mr. Nehru chaired a meeting to review the projects being executed by local bodies and Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board. He instructed officials to desilt canals, water bodies and stormwater drains in urban and rural habitations ahead of the NE monsoon. Besides monitoring the existing combined water supply schemes and water sources, various government agencies must work in close coordination to prevent damage to water and sewer networks during the execution of infrastructure projects. Measures must be complete the schemes announced in the Tamil Nadu Assembly in the past four years, he said. TWAD supplies nearly 2,071 million litres a day of water to 544 combined water supply schemes across the State. Senior officials from various government agencies, including TWAD, Chennai Metrowater and Commissionerate of Municipal Administration took part in the meeting, said a press release.

Thoothukudi collector reviews arrangements for Tiruchendur temple consecration ceremony
The consecration ceremony of Tiruchendur Subramanya Swamy temple is scheduled to take place on July 7. In view of this a preparatory meeting to discuss the necessary arrangements was held at Thoothukudi district collectorate, presided over by the District Collector K. Elambahavath. During the meeting the collector stated that the yagasalai puja related to consecration ceremony would begin on July 1 and on the day of consecration ceremony over 10-lakh people are expected to gather for the festival. He directed the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board (TWAD) to ensure uninterrupted supply of at least five lakh litres of drinking water daily throughout the festival period. He emphasised the importance of providing safe drinking water, setting up temporary toilets and parking areas under the Tiruchendur Municipality. He insisted on evicting the stray dogs and cattle from the temple premises and the municipality was also directed to ensure regular garbage clearance throughout the town. Mr. Elambahavath directed the highway officials to expedite the repair of Tiruchendur-Thoothukudi road and internal roads in the Tiruchendur town. Additionally, drainage connections blockages should be cleared and uninterrupted power supply ensured. A medical team must be stationed within the temple premises with 24x7 ambulance service and emergency treatment facilities. The police department was instructed to ensure adequate security arrangements to prevent overcrowding and to regulate the movement of devotees for smooth darshan. The Vaikasi Visakam festival at Tiruchendur is scheduled for June 9. Since this event also draws lakhs of devotees, the District Collector advised the officials to make necessary arrangements to accommodate the visiting devotees during this festival as well.

Erode Corporation ensures uninterrupted drinking water supply
With adequate water stored at the barrage constructed across the Cauvery River at Uratchikottai in Bhavani, the Corporation has assured residents that there will be no disruption in the supply of protected drinking water during the summer. The city spans 109.52 sq km and comprises 60 wards across four zones, accommodating a total of 1,69,913 households and 27,386 commercial establishments. Under the Dedicated Water Supply Scheme, raw water is drawn from the river at Varadhanallur near the Lower Mettur Barrage Power House – 4 at Uratchikottai and pumped into a water treatment plant with a capacity of 120 million litres per day (MLD). Of this, 52 MLD of treated drinking water is pumped to tanks at Suriyampalayam and VOC Park, which together have a total capacity of 1.48 crore litres. From these tanks, water is distributed to residents and establishments through 69 overhead tanks located across the 60 wards. The scheme ensures a daily supply of 81.10 MLD of water to the civic body, providing 135 litres per person. Currently, the discharge from the Mettur Dam into the river is 1,000 cusecs. The water level in the dam stands at 107.59 feet, compared to its full reservoir level of 120 feet, with a storage of 75.02 tmc ft against a total capacity of 93.47 tmc ft. A senior Corporation engineer told The Hindu that sufficient water is regularly stored in the main well in the river at Varadhanallur and that adequate water is also available in the dam. The engineer affirmed that there is no water shortage and assured regular supply to the residents. On Monday, Corporation Commissioner in charge and Deputy Commissioner K. Dhanalakshmi held a meeting with officials of the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board to ensure uninterrupted water supply.
