Yankees come back to beat Rays 7-5 behind Bellinger, Volpe and Fried
NEW YORK — Cody Bellinger hit a three-run homer, Anthony Volpe also went deep and the New York Yankees erased an early deficit Tuesday night in a 7-5 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays. Max Fried recovered from a rough start and threw a career-high 111 pitches in 6 2/3 innings. Volpe delivered a tiebreaking single in the fourth and launched a 452-foot homer to center field in the eighth, the longest of his career. He also committed two throwing errors at shortstop, the second one on a play that should have ended the game. That gave Tampa Bay another chance before Devin Williams whiffed All-Star Jonathan Aranda with runners at second and third for the final out. New York pulled within four games of first-place Toronto in the AL East after falling 6 1/2 back last weekend. Fried (12-4) allowed four runs — two earned — and four hits while surpassing his previous career high of 110 pitches for Atlanta at Philadelphia in September 2022. ___ AP MLB:

A loss -- and a new Cody Bellinger/Paul Goldschmidt nugget -- show why reeling Yankees seem headed toward 'soft buying' at best
The Yankees aren't selling. They just don't do that around here, especially not when they're in playoff position. Right? Right. Almost certainly. But Monday's 4-2 loss to Tampa Bay did nothing to restore the front office's faith in the team. It was further reinforcement of their likely approach, first reported by SNY on Saturday, to be what you might call 'soft buyers,' making moves that improve the current roster without risking the future. In that column, we relayed that the Yankees were floating some of their free-agent-to-be relievers in preliminary trade talks. We have since learned through league sources that last week the Yanks brought up Cody Bellinger and Paul Goldschmidt in talks with at least one other club. Wait, what? That does not mean that the Yankees will trade Bellinger and/or Goldschmidt. In fact, we'd still be very surprised. But the nugget is telling in its timing: this conversation happened last week, when the Yanks were concerned that Aaron Judge would need season-ending elbow surgery. If that had happened, GM Brian Cashman might have gone into sell mode. They were probably laying groundwork, just in case. This alone gives us another data point on how the front office might feel about its team. Judge did not need surgery, meaning that the season is still on. Technically. There are voices encouraging Cashman to go all-in before Thursday's trade deadline. In a weak American League, they really could still find themselves in the World Series. The way to get there is to add a few relievers to acquisitions Ryan McMahon and Amed Rosario without sacrificing top prospects -- the major league team has not earned the right to an addition that would cost Spencer Jones and Cam Schlittler. Once Fernando Cruz and Mark Leiter Jr. return from the injured list, the bullpen will be deeper. The Yankees do not have a particularly difficult schedule down the stretch, either, with plenty of games against the Twins, Orioles and White Sox. There is, then, a path out of this morass. But Cashman and his seasoned lieutenants have seen many seasons to be fooled into feeling inspired by this year's team. Sometimes even the best organizations have a down year.

Rays trade catcher Danny Jansen to his hometown Brewers for minor league infielder
NEW YORK — Veteran catcher Danny Jansen was traded by the Tampa Bay Rays to his hometown Milwaukee Brewers for minor league infielder Jadher Areinamo. Jansen was in Tampa Bay's original lineup against the New York Yankees but got pulled about 45 minutes before the first pitch. The trade was announced shortly after the Rays ended a four-game losing streak with a 4-2 win at Yankee Stadium. Jansen said he found out about the deal after meeting with manager Kevin Cash and president of baseball operations Erik Neander. 'I was getting ready to play the game, and I understand that side of baseball,' said Jansen, in his eighth major league season. 'Just grateful for the time spent here with the guys.' Tampa Bay signed Jansen to a one-year, $8.5 million contract on Dec. 13. He batted .204 with 11 homers and 29 RBIs in 73 games for the Rays, who also sent cash to the Brewers as part of the deal. 'He's a leader. He's a hitter. He's been in big games. I've gotten great reports,' Milwaukee manager Pat Murphy said after his team's 8-4 victory at home over the Chicago Cubs. Brewers catcher Eric Haase was designated for assignment to clear a roster spot for Jansen. 'It's a hard day for the Brewers in some ways because Eric Haase for two years has been an incredible team member. When he plays, he helps us win. Anytime we subtract a guy who's been a leader in that clubhouse, too, it's a really tough day,' Murphy said. 'I don't know Danny Jansen. I know his reputation. I know he's a great player. And I trust our front office. I just do. They're trying to make upgrades in every little area they can.' The 30-year-old Jansen grew up in Appleton, Wisconsin. He is joining the NL Central leaders to serve as a backup to William Contreras, who is playing through a fractured finger. Contreras is hitting .245 with six homers and 42 RBIs in 100 games. 'I don't live too far,' Jansen said. 'That's going to be something that my wife and I had never experienced.' Jansen was moved right around the MLB trade deadline for the second straight season. Toronto dealt him to Boston on July 24, 2024, and he wound up making baseball history by playing for both teams in a game at Fenway Park that got suspended June 26 and resumed two months later. 'Having gone through a trade last year will probably make this process a little bit easier for me, going into a team as a catcher learning pitchers and all that,' Jansen said. 'So, looking forward to the challenge and task at hand with that. I think having a little bit of experience helps.' Areinamo, 21, was batting .297 with 11 homers, 51 RBIs and 15 stolen bases in 94 games for Class A Wisconsin of the Midwest League. He has started at third base, shortstop and second base. Last season, Areinamo hit .301 with 30 doubles in 110 games for Wisconsin and won the Midwest League batting crown. He was rated the No. 10 prospect in Milwaukee's system by Baseball America and No. 24 by The Rays are 8-18 in their last 26 games following a 25-9 stretch from May 20 to June 26. Tampa Bay is 2 1/2 games back of the final wild-card spot in the American League.

Brewers acquire Rays C Danny Jansen for minor-leaguer
(Photo credit: Nathan Ray Seebeck-Imagn Images) The Milwaukee Brewers made a move Monday night to add power at the catcher position, acquiring Danny Jansen and cash from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for minor league infielder Jadher Areinamo. Jansen, who has 11 homers this year, will take the roster spot of Milwaukee backup catcher Eric Haase, who was designated for assignment as part of the transaction. Jansen, 30, grew up in Appleton, Wis. 'I don't live too far (from Milwaukee), so that's going to be something that my wife and I have never experienced as a family,' Jansen said, according to 'I'm definitely excited to meet the new organization, and I've heard nothing but great things about them as well. I'm super grateful for my time here, and I'm excited for the next chapter as well.' In 73 games for Tampa Bay this year, Jansen hit .204 with a .314 on-base percentage, a .389 slugging percentage and 29 RBIs. Across 574 major league games for the Toronto Blue Jays (2018-24), the Boston Red Sox (2024) and Tampa Bay (2025), Jansen has a career hitting line of .218/.309/.415 with 85 home runs and 249 RBIs. Haase, 32, hit .228/.278/.396 with two home runs and nine RBIs in 30 games for the Brewers in 2025. In 383 games for Cleveland (2018-19, 2023), Detroit (2020-23) and Milwaukee (2024-25), he owns a .228/.278/.396 slash line with 48 homers and 160 RBIs. Areinamo, 21, was ranked as the Brewers' 24th-best prospect by MLB Pipeline. He hit .297/.355.463 with 11 homers, 51 RBIs and 15 stolen bases this season for high Class-A Wisconsin, which plays in Appleton.
