Tamworth garden waste collection charge set to increase for 2026
The cost of having garden wasted collected in Tamworth looks set to increase for Borough Council has proposed to raise the charge from £41 to £42.50 per year in line with inflation, according to a report from the new charge would come into effect when applications open to residents in October, covering up to 23 fortnightly collections between the end of January and mid-December next report said raising the price in line with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) would ensure it maintains "quality services" while "ensuring financial sustainability". "By adhering to the CPI, we can continue to provide valuable services to our community without compromising on standards or efficiency," it would be the second time garden waste prices have increased in Tamworth since they were introduced in 2017, following a raise from £36 to £41 for 2025.A decision on the proposed increase will be made during a meeting of the council's cabinet on Thursday at 18:00 BST. This news was gathered by the Local Democracy Reporting Service which covers councils and other public service organisations. Walsall's Jellis charged with betting breaches
Walsall midfielder Jamie Jellis has been charged with misconduct for allegedly breaching the Football Association's rules on betting. The 24-year-old is accused of placing a total of 2,248 bets on matches between 30 April 2019 and 4 July 2023. All the alleged bets took place before he joined the Saddlers from Tamworth, then in National League North, in January 2024. After leaving Stevenage in 2020, Jellis spent four years in non-league before getting another chance in the English Football League with Walsall. He has made 57 appearances for the Saddlers, scoring seven goals. Jellis has until 29 July to respond to the charge. "We will be supporting Jamie throughout the process," said a brief Walsall statement on the matter.

The Justin Bowen-trained gelding tries his heart out every time, if he gets beaten it is usually either bad luck or he just wasn't quite good enough on the day. SPECK (8) resumes on a hat-trick, bearing in mind that the second of the sequence was a Randwick TAB Highway. WHO GOES HERE (3) is four from four at the track and trip. â– â– â– â– â– INSIDE MAIL - ALBURY LUNAR MOJO (1) has been awfully costly to follow but at the same time he has placed at six of his eight starts and four of them are seconds. On top of that he has two seconds and a third from four Albury runs and has twice placed second on Heavy It's now or never again. FITZALAN (6) led and was passed late on debut at Wangaratta, One would imagine that is the modus operandi again here from barrier 2. MACHETE (8) is trained here now and was good in her two Victorian runs. Bet: Lunar Mojo to win â– â– â– â– â– ELLIS BEACH (4) is having his first run for the new management. It will be his first run in NSW as well but he is fit for purpose on the score of a July 7 trial (ran second) at home at Wangaratta. Finds a winnable race. Not sold on the Heavy form of POWERFUL MAJIK (5) but he ran a good race here on debut. CAYMAN ISLAND (7) turned in his best career run when fourth to a handy horse at Wagga at $101. Bet: Ellis Beach to win, Daily Double 1st Leg 4, 2nd Leg 6 â– â– â– â– â– BLAZING SWORD (5) is a Bendigo-housed three-year-old who shares his name with Contract Racing's exceptional late 1980s colt who ended up as a stallion in Thailand. The 2021 model of Blazing Sword has a tidy little resume of one win, three seconds and a third in his 10 starts. Best of all, the son of Too Darn Hot has a win and a third on his only two Heavy runs. GOOFINATOR (10) sent out some rather positive signs second-up that a win was close at hand. FLUTTERBY (6) is flying. â– â– â– â– â– JUST LIKE LIAM (6) is from the 17th and final crop of Albert Stapleford's beloved Magic Albert, a great little over-achiever at stud he was too. Anyway, Just Like Liam is trained here at Albury by Garry Worsnop; 11 times he has raced there for two wins and three placings. He has also won at the track and distance. FREDDY'S SHOCK (10) ran second to Sorry Sunshine on a Heavy 10 at Wagga last start. Both are clearly in the mix here. As is RUSHFORD (1) who was fifth in that same race.

Bred by a billionaire, bought by a battler: The Jackal's remarkable Ramornie legacy
There have been some great horses win the time-honoured Ramornie Handicap; Razor Sharp, Mistress Anne, Cangronde and the greatest of them all, Takeover Target. But why is it that so many people's favourite Ramornie winner – The Jackal – is the same? He's one of four horses to have won the race twice but only the ardent racing scholars could name the other three. Everyone loves The Jackal, the horse bred by a billionaire but bought by a battler. 'He was a life-changer,'' the horse's trainer Paul St Vincent told Racenet 17 years on from The Jackal's second Ramornie win. 'I bought him at the Magic Millions Sale in June (2004) so he was a fairly late yearling by then, nearly turning two. 'Gerry (Harvey) bred (him). I paid twenty grand for him.' Not big money for Harvey but hardly an insignificant sum for any country trainer to spend on an unraced horse at the time. 'That's a fair few years ago and we weren't racing for anywhere near the prizemoney we're racing for now,'' St Vincent says. 'That's why he had to move about a bit and travel, Brisbane, Sydney whatever to chase the rich races.' • Ramornie mission is Boom or bust Time for Heathcote galloper Given St Vincent was stationed at Tamworth, The Jackal wasn't that much further from Eagle Farm or Doomben as he was from Randwick or Rosehill. In fact, 27 of The Jackal's 74 starts were at Eagle Farm. 'He was in some pretty big races,'' St Vincent said. 'The thing about him was that he didn't like it if the track was soft. 'He was fairly sound. Towards the end, he had a few little niggles and has his issues that we had to manage continuously 'It wasn't 100 per cent with nothing ever not going wrong, there was always something happening here and there but that's training racehorses. 'I was lucky because we owned him, we could call the shots and if I didn't like the way he was, if I thought he's got something not right, I didn't go. I could pull him out and I didn't have an owner that I had to explain to.' • For the record. The Jackal won 15 times including the WJ Healy Stakes, Star Kingdom Stakes, Prime Minister's Cup and Falvelon Stakes. But it was his two Ramornie's in 2007 and 2008 that elevated him to cult status. 'That's what country racing can do to horses,'' the man they call The Saint says.' 'When they're owned by country people and trained by country people and come out and beat whatever's the best on offer, they seem to get plenty of coverage from it.' So with another Ramornie nigh upon us, plenty of racing fans of a certain age with tell those younger of a horse named The Jackal. For those of us who admired the son of Bite The Bullet from afar, we think of him every Ramornie day every year. But for The Saint, it's more often than that. • Mitch Cohen's Blackbook: Five to follow from Randwick on Saturday 'I think about him every day cause I've gotta feed him,'' St Vincent said. 'He's still alive, you know. He's at my place at Tamworth. We've got a place out of town and he lives out there. 'He gets looked after pretty well. 'He's rising 23, it's not what you class as old, old, old but it's pretty good I can tell you.' A $20,000 purchase who would go on to win a million bucks and win not just the lifelong devotion of one man but the admiration of so many more. The Jackal, like the Ramornie itself, was always destined to become 'time-honoured'.
