Diversifying literature for Delhiites

When Vesmir moved to Delhi from Madhya Pradesh in 2019, he realised that the metropolis provided him with a golden opportunity to connect with other readers. But he also noticed a difference in how Delhi reads — there were people who only wanted to read 'elite' literary works, those who preferred contemporary authors and didn't want to challenge themselves with other genres and access to reading communities was reserved for specific groups of people. When it comes to reading, your community should not be a privilege, he says, and that was what made him start Tangerine in January last year, with a group of vibrant readers. The group meets once a month for themed discussions, movie screenings, and author meet-and-greets. 'When I started Tangerine, the goal was to make people read the books I loved… but I wanted to diversify and make people read books of all genres,' says Vesmir. But when he announced Tangerine would expand beyond readingWestern and Indian authors, the attendance at the monthly meetings dropped. To bring in more people, Vesmir began organising movie screenings and activities like themed drawing and blackout poetry. 'Today, Tangerine has a mix of people — college students, working professionals, authors ...but still, sometimes, it is a struggle to get people to read what they don't want to,' says Vesmir. He is committed to bringing books that are not considered 'mainstream' to Delhi's reading community. For instance, this month, the community plans on reading The Vegetarian by Han Kang, a South Korean author, and had previously picked up The Seven Moons of Maali Almeida by Sri Lankan writer Shehan Karunatilaka. By bringing these books into spotlight, Vesmir aims to introduce readers to varied writing styles, fresh topics, and diverse cultures. Cultural unfamiliarity and language barriers also pose challenges to readers in the city, he says. Authors such asOcean Vuong, who writes in English and in lyrical style, tend to be more popular among the readers. Despite translated works often being the most palatable for the community of readers, introducing people to new concepts and authors has its benefits, feels Vesmir. 'Social media continues to be the bedrock of my initiative as I am able to reach out to more people and arrange collaborations,' he adds.

Best eSIM plans in Australia: Get connected easily and enjoy your new plan in minutes

eSIMs are really taking off in Australia, with the feature becoming increasingly common in newer smartphones. While not every handset offers embedded SIM support, many of the best phones of 2025 no longer require physical SIM cards anymore — they've simply embraced the added convenience of digital eSIM tech, allowing users to activate new plans or switch carriers right from their phone's settings. In many cases, activation is as easy as scanning a QR code. eSIM tech is safer than using physical SIM cards, as it's embedded directly into your device's hardware, making it harder to steal or clone. On top of this, eSIMs are great for travellers, making it easy to juggle multiple plans for different countries. Of course, not all Aussie telcos are fully on board yet — Telstra, Optus and Vodafone all offer eSIM support, as do many other mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs), though there are still some smaller providers that only use physical SIMs. This means you'll want to double-check if your preferred carrier supports eSIMs before you commit to a new phone or plan that uses this tech. That said, we expect eSIM support to become even more widespread across Australia's telcos, ultimately giving everyone more choice and convenience. For those looking to ditch their physical SIM card, here are the best eSIM plans in Australia. Tangerine (25GB 5G Mobile SIM) | 25GB data | prepaid | AU$29p/m There are cheaper offers on the list below, but when you take away promotional pricing that many carriers offer for the first 6 months, we think this plan from Tangerine offers the best bang for your buck. For the reasonable price of AU$29p/m, you get 25GB of monthly data and access to Telstra's 4G and 5G networks. You can also bank up to 1000GB of unused data, which is exceptional. Total minimum cost is AU$29 (1 month) | Total cost for first year: AU$348 Vodafone $73 Large SIM Only Plan | 400GB data | No lock-in contract | AU$73p/m With 400GB of monthly data, Vodafone's Large SIM Only Plan is unbeatable when it comes to value. Of course, most people won't be able to go through that much data in a month, so the $63 Medium SIM Only Plan with 200GB of monthly data could be a better option. Total minimum cost is AU$73 (1 month) | Total cost for first year: AU$876 When selecting the best eSIM plans, the Aussie Tom's Guide team focuses on several key factors that we believe are important to most users. Our initial step is to exclude carriers that do not currently support eSIM technology. Value is a top priority — the ideal eSIM plans offer a sensible amount of data without being overly expensive. Given that the average Australian consumes about 12GB of data monthly, we consider this our minimum data allowance. We also examine premium eSIM plans that provide ample data, even if they come at a higher cost. eSIM plans should always include unlimited calls and texts to standard Australian numbers. This is a common feature even in affordable options, so we avoid any plan that limits these. Network coverage is another crucial element. Australians can expect access to either the Telstra, Optus or Vodafone networks, depending on their chosen provider. Telstra boasts the broadest 4G and 5G coverage, with Optus and Vodafone following closely. Finally, while not the primary driver for our choices, we also consider additional perks such as bonus international minutes or data rollover.

Faster, cheaper NBN plans launch early

This month, three Internet Service Providers (ISPs) launched brand new NBN plans that promise both speed and affordability. Tangerine, SpinTel and Exetel each introduced anNBN 500 plan exclusively for customers on either a FTTP (Fibre to the Premises) or a HFC (Hybrid Fibre Coaxial) connection type. But how do these plans compare to one other and others with similar speeds? And what can you expect to get if you sign up for one? Tangerine's new NBN 500 plan Customer favourite ISP, Tangerine, has a new NBN plan capable of reaching faster speeds than NBN 250 plans. At the time of writing, Tangerine's new 'Speedy Max' plan is the most affordable option around this speed tier. It boasts download speeds of 500Mbps and upload speeds of 50Mbps. The Speed Max plan is priced at $68.90 for the first six months, then the price increases to $88.90 per month. This offer ends December 31, 2025. Tangerine is also offering a high-speed trial for this plan. This means customers who sign up before September 14 2025 can expect faster speeds of 1000/50 until October 14 2025. After the trial ends, this plan will be reduced back to the advertised 500/50+ speeds. Tangerine customers are also treated to a number of bonuses, such as seven-day technical customer support and a $50 bonus when they refer a friend. SpinTel's new NBN 500 plan SpinTel's new 'Home Turbo' plan is a happy middle ground between its 'Fast' NBN 100 plan and its 'Turbofast' NBN 700 plans, and it's even cheaper than the NBN 100 plan by $2 per month. New customers can get this plan for $74 per month for the first six months then $84.95 per month thereafter. Customers on the Home turbo plan will receive download speeds of 500Mbps and upload speeds of 42Mbps at typical evening speeds. It comes with unlimited data, has no setup fee and allows customers to bring their own modem. Bundling a SpinTel NBN with a mobile SIM, will score you a discounted rate of just $18 per month with 23GB data. This is a saving of $3 per month. Exetel's new NBN 500 plan Exetel has waved goodbye to its catalogue of NBN plans and launched a 'one size fits all plan', sensibly named 'One Plan'. Priced at $80 per month, it offers download speeds up to 500Mbps and upload speeds up to 40Mbps with unlimited data. At the time of writing, there is no promo offer to go with this particular NBN plan but that's not a dealbreaker since this is fairly reasonably priced already for what you get. There is a caveat, however. In addition to doing away with multiple NBN plans, Exetel has also traded its 'five free speed boosts per month' in favour of 1,000Mbps speed boost for a price of $1 per day. Customers can however opt into its latest 'Hibernate' feature, which allows customers to voluntarily slow their speeds to 12/1Mbps with the click of a button via the Exetel app. This is great for people who travel often and won't be home to use their full bandwidth. Customers save $1 per day when hibernating their internet. Like Tangerine, Exetel also has a refer-a-friend program, but it will only save customers $1 off their bill per month. The friend will also receive $1 off per month for as long as both remain connected to the One Plan. If neither of these plans or providers spark your interest, here are some NBN plans capable of achieving similar speeds across a variety of other ISPs:

Japan's iconic bullet train is getting a glow-up – here it is in pictures

If you thought Japan 's bullet trains were about as cool as they could get, you'd be wrong. Why? Well, because thanks to a partnership with UK -based design consultancy Tangerine, the legendary high-speed services are about to get a whole new look. East Japan Railway Company has just unveiled the first images of its brand-new high-speed E10 Shinkansen train (which will eventually replace the existing E2 and E5 on the Tohoku route) and while they've only just entered the 'design implementation' phase, these babies could be on the railways as soon as 2030. The interiors have apparently been inspired by Japan's various landscapes, from the coast to the mountains, with a mid-green colour palette nodding to the country's lush forests, and the graphic shapes being inspired by the Sakura flower (cherry blossom) silhouette, which is one of Japan's most iconic symbols. And you won't find any jarring fluorescent lighting on these trains – instead, Tangerine opted to install something called indirect wash lights which create a gentler lighting effect and a calmer atmosphere. Scroll on for some snaps of the designs. They look pretty suave, don't they? Have a look at this , too.

Netflix just got a must-watch crime comedy from the Oscar-winning director of ‘Anora' — and it's 96% on Rotten Tomatoes

Sean Baker was the toast of Tinseltown earlier this year when his phenomenal comedy-drama 'Anora' scooped five Oscars, including the Academy's biggest prizes, Best Picture and Best Director. But the Mikey Madison star-making movie was far from Baker's first time creating a darkly funny flick that critics and viewers adored. 2015 saw the release of 'Tangerine,' a bitingly sharp crime comedy that sees a sex worker set out on a quest to even the score after learning that her boyfriend (who also happens to be her pimp) was unfaithful to her while she was locked-up in jail for a month. Filmed on three iPhone 5S phones — at a time when the idea of filming even an indie movie on a smartphone was considered pretty novel, let alone an S model — 'Tangerine' is a brilliant underdog story, and it's just arrived on Netflix as part of the service's July slate. If you enjoyed 'Anora,' then it makes for the perfect follow-up, and if you don't want to take my word for it, its critical reception should convince you to add it to your Netflix watchlist. Transgender sex worker Sin-Dee Rella (Kitana Kiki Rodriguez) has just got out of jail after serving a 28-day sentence. Meeting up with her friend, and fellow sex worker, Alexandra (Mya Taylor), she is shocked to learn her boyfriend, Chester (James Ransone), has been cheating on her while she was incarcerated. Setting out into the hazy heat of Hollywood on a warm Christmas Eve evening, Sin-Dee vows to find Chester and get to the bottom of the situation. What follows is an odyssey through Los Angeles, exploring a side of the city that is ever present but often hidden. Much like 'Anora,' 'Tangerine" was a real critical darling. The 2015 movie holds a very impressive 96% score on review aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes, and this rating comes from almost 170 reviews, so it's not a small sample size. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. In fact, 'Tangerine's' RT score is higher than 'Anora's,' though the latter currently holds a strong 93% rating, so we're talking about two great movies. Writing for the Observer, legendary U.K. film critic Mark Kermode said, 'Fired by zesty performances that crackle and burn with energy, 'Tangerine' is a bittersweet affair underpinned by a winning sense of empathy and affection.' Jake Wilson of the Sydney Morning Herald described it as 'raucously entertaining.' 'The chemistry of the leads and their authentic, crackling dialogue make it a pleasure to tag along for the day,' said Rebecca Keegan of the Los Angeles Times. Meanwhile, Matt Zoller Seitz labeled the Sean Baker movie 'assured and immensely likable.' David Lewis of the San Francisco Chronicle was similarly impressed. 'This is sublime filmmaking, a textbook example of how indies can tell groundbreaking stories in a way that Hollywood simply can't match,' wrote Lewis in an extremely positive review. Plenty of critics also praised 'Tangerine' for its (at the time) innovative style due to being shot on an iPhone 5S. This gives the movie a gritty and guerrilla look, and makes you, as a viewer, feel like you're alongside Sin-Dee and Alexandra for a wild ride through L.A. If you enjoyed Sean Baker's work in 'Anora,' then you don't want to skip 'Tangerine.' It's a little rougher around the edges, at least from a stylistic point of view, but it's no less bursting with snappy dialogue and thoughtful commentary on the world around. And it's far from the only worthwhile new addition to the streaming service this month.
