Park Bo Gum caught filming IU at Blue Dragon Awards; fans joke Lee Jong Suk might be jealous: ‘Straight out of When Life Gives You Tangerines'

The 4th Blue Dragon Series Awards night turned out to be a big one for Netflix's original When Life Gives You Tangerines. The show bagged Best Show, with its lead IU aka Lee Ji Eun clinching the Daesang, the biggest honour of the night, alongside Yeom Hye Ran, who won Best Supporting Actor. The full cast of the K-drama, along with the directors and screenwriters, showed up for the star-studded night, hosted once again by Jun Hyun Moo and YoonA for the fourth year in a row. But fans couldn't stop gushing over Park Bo Gum's sweet behaviour, turning into a total fanboy for IU as she accepted her award on stage. The actor looked straight out of the show, standing up mid-ceremony, phone in hand, grinning and hyping IU as she gave her speech, visibly shocked to receive such a massive award. In South Korea, winning a Daesang is one of the biggest honours in an actor's career, the highest recognition at Korean award shows, often called the Grand Prize. IU, tearing up on stage, accepted the award, saying, 'This work will be my greatest pride in life.' She added, 'I was really happy to be able to work with the Tangerines team.' Later, speaking directly to the fans, she said, 'To all the Aesooni who have lived their lives vividly in a hazy world, and to the Geummyeongi who have nurtured their dreams with determination, I express my respect and gratitude.' A third chimed in, 'I bet Lee Jong Suk, who's actually her boyfriend, would be jealous if he saw this.' For the unversed, IU and Law and City star Lee Jong Suk publicly confirmed their relationship last year. Meanwhile, Bo Gum, along with Lee Jun Hyuk, Lee Hye Ri, and IU, won the Upbit Popular Star Award. Hyeri, who starred in Netflix's Friendly Rivalry, added, 'It's my first time receiving a popular award, so I'm even more touched,' and added, 'I will not forget the precious vote from my fans and will become a wonderful popular star.' Making the moment even more magical, veteran singer Choi Baek Ho made a surprise entry to perform To the Land of Hope, one of the original soundtracks he crooned for the K-drama. Following the emotional performance, both IU and Bo Gum stood for a full-on standing ovation, showing their sincere respect. For IU, the awards night was an even bigger win, taking home both Best Actor and the Most Popular Award in one go.

Powerful and moving Oscar-nominated war film 'best ever' fans have seen

Tangerines, the Estonian-Georgian film has been lauded for its powerful portrayal of anti-war sentiment, which has resonated with audiences and critics alike The critically acclaimed Tangerines has been praised for delivering a fresh and thought-provoking perspective on the subject of war, earning commendation for its staunch anti-war message on the silver screen. The film is a product of Zaza Urushadze's cinematic vision, serving as the producer, scribe, and director of this 2013 Estonian-Georgian collaborative effort, which skilfully tackles the challenging topics of conflict, reconciliation, and the aspiration for peace. ‌ Set against the backdrop of the 1992–1993 Abkhazian conflict, Tangerines unfolds in the year 1992 within the war-torn landscapes of Abkhazia—a separatist region of Georgia—engulfed by the aftermath of hostilities. ‌ It chronicles the tale of Ivo, an Estonian tangerine farmer, who boldly chooses to remain amidst the chaos to tend to his orchard. Faced with the brutal realities of the surrounding violence, Ivo gives shelter to a stricken soldier left to fend for himself. Garnering international acclaim, Tangerines received an Oscar nomination at the 87th Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film — the first-ever Estonian production to achieve such prestigious acknowledgment. The film was further recognised with a nomination in the same category at the 72nd Golden Globe Awards, reports the Mirror US. Shot amidst the striking scenery of Guria in Georgia, the cast features Lembit Ulfsak, Giorgi Nakashidze, Elmo Nüganen, and Mikheil (Misha) Meskhi in pivotal roles. Winning the hearts of moviegoers and critics alike with an impressive 88 per cent endorsement rate on Rotten Tomatoes, the film has garnered universally positive feedback from critics; one such praise reads: "It is tremendous storytelling: engaging, intelligent, and with some lovely touches." Another reviewer heaped accolades on the film, stating: "You'd find that in investing 87 minutes of your time for Tangerines, you had viewed not just a poignant anti-war film, but a beautifully realised cinematic parable." ‌ Meanwhile, a critic hailed Urushadze's work with high commendation: "Pitch-perfect performances and Urushadze's careful unwinding of the story ensure Tangerines is never less than riveting." On the topic of its profound resonance, a commentator remarked about Tangerines: "Although the subject of civil war within the former Soviet countries has been tackled in other movies, this retelling is one of the most concise and affecting." ‌ Likewise, feedback from audience members echoed the sentiment, as one described the anti-war piece as: "A gentle and delicate warning about death and life, wars and humanity! Beautiful filming and acting." Concurrently, an enthusiastic spectator expressed it was "outstanding", elaborating: "What a powerful film. This was one of the best films I've seen in a while. The message was outstanding. Deserves an applaud." Another individual insisted that the film rightly earned its Oscar nod, sharing: "Wonderfully acted and the cinematography is memorable. Compare the warmth and colour of the tangerine orchard with the bleakness of the land surrounding it. Oscar nominated, superbly acted. It is a striking anti-war film." One viewer expressed unexpected admiration for the film, saying: "Not just another war movie. The story feels real and human and far from the front lines yet deeply entrenched in the struggles. It surprised me to like this film so much."

Dundee United Conference League opponents revealed as Jim Goodwin and Co begin journey to big time

The Tangerines booked European football after a fourth place finish on their return to the top flight Dundee United have discovered their UEFA Conference League opponents. Jim Goodwin and his troops will kick off their European journey with a two-legged clash against FC UNA Strassen of Luxembourg in the second qualifying round. ‌ The Tangerines were part of the seeded group in the Main Path draw and after being paired with five potential opponents before proceedings got underway, that has now been narrowed down to one. ‌ United face three ties if they are to reach the Conference League proper after their fourth place finish in the Premiership. Aberdeen's shock Scottish Cup win over Celtic at Hampden that ended Brendan Rodgers' hopes of landing a domestic Treble meant it would be the Conference League second qualifying round for United. Hibs - who finished third - took the Europa League second qualifying round spot with Jimmy Thelin and Co booking a ticket to the Europa League play-off round and with that guaranteeing at least Conference League proper as reward for their heroics at the national stadium - despite finishing fifth in the final league standings. United fans can get the big dates in the diary with the two-legged tie taking place at the end of July. The matches will be played on Thursday, July 24 and Thursday, July 31 - just one week apart. ‌ Goodwin and Co will know their potential third qualifying round opponents before a ball is kicked in the second round. UEFA will reveal the pairings for the next stage on Monday, July 21.
