Dodgers' Dave Roberts explains placing Tanner Scott on IL

The post Dodgers' Dave Roberts explains placing Tanner Scott on IL appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Los Angeles Dodgers received a major scare this week when reliever Tanner Scott exited Monday night's win over the Minnesota Twins with a noticeable arm issue. On Tuesday, manager Dave Roberts confirmed that the left-hander was placed on the 15-day injured list with elbow inflammation — a decision the team is hopeful will not lead to a long-term absence. The injury occurred during the ninth inning of Monday's 5-2 victory. After walking one batter and hitting another, Scott grimaced and immediately exited the game mid at-bat, flexing his arm. The 31-year-old closer was reportedly emotional in the clubhouse, with Roberts saying the closer was struggling. While the scene was alarming, Roberts offered cautious optimism the following day during his media availability. The update from the manager, captured and posted by Dodgers Nation on X (formerly known as Twitter), highlighted the current state of Scott's condition. 'Just given the way he feels, we're in a better spot than we were last night.' Roberts reiterated that the club is awaiting full MRI results to confirm the severity, but the initial evaluation suggests that a season-ending injury may have been avoided. The move to the IL, he said, is precautionary. The implications for the Dodgers bullpen are significant. Scott, who signed a four-year, $72 million deal this offseason, has a 4.14 ERA and 19 saves in 26 chances this year. His fastball velocity has dipped slightly, and he currently leads the league in blown saves. The team recalled Alexis Diaz from Triple-A and will likely turn to veteran Kirby Yates in the closer role for now. Despite inconsistent results, Scott remains a key arm for a bullpen that's ranked middle of the pack in ERA. With the MLB trade in nine days, Scott's status could push the Dodgers to aggressively pursue additional late-inning help. They've already been linked to Emmanuel Clase of the Guardians and Jhoan Duran of the Twins. The Dodgers, battling injuries throughout the roster, are still in the thick of the NL West race. While the club managed a much-needed win on Monday, the absence of their closer — even if short-term — casts a shadow over the team's momentum heading into the trade deadline. Whether Scott's injury is a short-term hiccup or something more serious, the Dodgers bullpen will be tested. And with the MLB trade deadline days away, Roberts and the front office may be forced to act swiftly to reinforce a group suddenly under pressure. Dodgers' Dave Roberts makes ‘rock bottom' request after another implosion

The post Dodgers' Dave Roberts makes 'rock bottom' request after another implosion appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Los Angeles Dodgers suffered an ugly 10-7 loss to the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday night, marking an 11th loss in 14 games as the beleaguered bullpen continues to stink up the joint. The latest bullpen implosion saw Dodgers relievers give up three runs in consecutive innings and seven runs total for the game. Is this rock bottom for Los Angeles? Dodgers manager Dave Roberts sure hopes it can't get any worse, per ESPN's Alden Gonzalez. 'It better be rock bottom,' Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said, 'as far as how we've been pitching, how we've been playing defense.' Los Angeles and Minnesota were tied at 3-3 heading into Tuesday night's sixth inning, but Ben Casparius allowed three runs and then left the game with an injury without recording an out. He walked three hitters and threw just four strikes on 17 pitches. The Dodgers answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning, only to see the Twins put up three more runs in the top of the seventh. Will Klein got one out but then walked the bases loaded before Edgardo Henriquez relieved him, only to commit a three-run error that led to boos from the home crowd. This all came after prized offseason acquisition Tanner Scott, who has been a huge disappointment, hit the IL earlier in the day. It's just the latest in a long line of injuries, with relievers Blake Treinen, Michael Kopech, Brusdar Graterol and Evan Phillips all also unavailable. Everybody knows Los Angeles is seeking bullpen help at the trade deadline, so expect a deal to come together soon. The Dodgers have been linked to a number of reliever trade candidates and will surely do whatever it takes to land at least one of them. Despite all these woes, Los Angeles still holds a comfortable 3.5-game lead in the NL West and boasts a loaded roster. Of course, the Dodgers aren't going to win another World Series if the bullpen is a total disaster come October. Is this truly rock bottom for the defending champs? Stay tuned. Dodgers Predicted to 'Break Prospect Bank' for Athletics' Flamethrowing Closer

Dodgers Predicted to 'Break Prospect Bank' for Athletics' Flamethrowing Closer originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Los Angeles Dodgers' need for another high-leverage reliever is one of the worst-kept secrets in baseball. The club's bullpen ranks in the bottom 10 of the league, and closer Tanner Scott has been anything but consistent. He leads the league in blown saves, and his ballooning 4.14 ERA is only made worse knowing he left Monday's win against the Minnesota Twins after experiencing a 'sting' in his left forearm. With a stint on the injury list likely, according to manager Dave Roberts, the Dodgers are desperate to fix the backend of the bullpen and even acquire another closer at the trade deadline. Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report predicts the Dodgers' despondence will lead to 'breaking the prospect bank' for Athletics' flamethrowing closer Mason Miller. Rymer piggybacks off MLB insider Ken Rosenthal's initial thoughts of the Dodgers possessing the one thing the A's may covet to pry Miller away: the willingness to part ways with top prospects. According to Bleacher Report, the Dodgers have the fourth-ranked farm system in Major League Baseball. Although the A's have been stubborn about trading Miller, Rosenthal reports that their stance is 'subject to change,' and Rymer views the Dodgers as a team 'willing to move heaven and earth' to get the right-hander out of Sacramento. Former top prospect Bobby Miller and current top prospect Dalton Rushing, who is currently wasting away on the bench, could highlight a massive haul for Miller. The Dodgers get their closer, and the A's would sell extremely high on a player not expected to be on the club once their move to Las Vegas is finalized. Miller, 26, has not performed as well as he did in 2024, but his fastball is still one of the most electric in baseball. Consistently hitting above 103 mph, Miller has posted a 4.00 ERA and 19 saves in 36 appearances this season. However, Miller's recent stretch indicates he has plenty left in the tank after posting a 1.96 ERA with six hits allowed in his last 18.1 innings. Dodgers Receive Encouraging Update Regarding Tanner Scott's Injury

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The Los Angeles Dodgers know they have to add to the bullpen with all of the injuries their relievers have endured this season. One of those relievers is All-Star closer Tanner Scott. While he hasn't performed as well as he has in the past, the Dodgers know he's a major piece of their bullpen. The team received some very encouraging news after Tuesday night's game. LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - JULY 21: Tanner Scott #66 of the Los Angeles Dodgers reacts as he leaves the game with medical staff during the ninth inning against the Minnesota Twins at Dodger Stadium on July 21, 2025 in Los Angeles, California. More"In what could be the latest bullet the Dodgers have dodged on the injury front recently, Scott was put on the injured list Tuesday with what was only diagnosed as "elbow inflammation" — ensuring his season won't be over after exiting Monday's game with a "stinging sensation" in his forearm," Jack Harris wrote for the Los Angeles Times. "On Tuesday, Scott got an MRI that he said showed no ligament or structural damage in his left throwing arm." The Dodgers came into the season with high expectations for Scott as their new closer after signing him in free agency away from the San Diego Padres. While players obviously don't enjoy missing time or going on the injured list, this news is as good as it gets for the All-Star closer. "Definitely when it was happening, I had no clue what was going on because I've never had an arm issue in my entire career," Scott told the LA Times. "It kept getting worse and I'm like, 'I have no clue what it is.' But after today, it kind of gave me like a clear head." Even if Scott was healthy, the Dodgers would be pursuing at least one high-leverage reliever at the trade deadline. However, this update likely saved them from having to splurge on a second reliever. Shohei Ohtani homers in fifth consecutive game, tying a Los Angeles Dodgers franchise record

With the Dodgers "all but a lock" to add a reliever before the trade deadline following Tanner Scott's injury, Eric Samulski assesses which arms could be in line for precious save opportunities. LOS ANGELES — Shohei Ohtani homered for the fifth consecutive game on Wednesday, tying a Los Angeles Dodgers franchise record. Yankees star Aaron Judge was the last player to homer in five consecutive games, accomplishing that feat last year. Ohtani, who leads the National League with 37 home runs, homered in the first inning off Minnesota Twins starter Chris Paddack. He hit a slow curveball 441 feet to center. He carried the bat midway down the first-base line and then did a bat flip. This is the seventh time in Dodgers history that a player has homered in five consecutive games. Ohtani joins Max Muncy, Joc Pederson, Adrian Gonzalez, Matt Kemp, Shawn Green and Roy Campanella in that club. Ohtani, a three-time MVP, is batting .276 with 70 RBIs. He's also pitched well in six games and is scheduled to throw four innings on Monday in Cincinnati as he is getting close in his buildup as a starter, coming back from his second right UCL repair surgery. With an off day on Thursday, Ohtani's next chance to see if he can homer in six consecutive games will be against the Red Sox in Boston.
