Tanvir Islam's Maiden 5-Wicket Haul Helps B'desh Secure 16-Run Win In 2nd ODI
Last Updated: Tanvir Islam's five-wicket haul helped Bangladesh bowl Sri Lanka out for 232 runs in reply to the 249-run target set by the Mehidy Hasan Miraz-led side. Tanvir Islam, in his second ODI match for Bangladesh against Sri Lanka, picked up five wickets for 39 runs in 10 overs to help them secure a win by 16 runs. In the match played at R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Saturday (July 5), after Bangladesh posted a total of 248 runs in 45.5 overs, Islam dismissed Nishan Madushka (17), Kusal Mendis (56), Kamindu Mendis (33), Dunith Wellalage (1), and Maheesh Theekshana (2) to help the Mehidy Hasan Miraz-led side bowl Sri Lanka out for 232 runs in 48.5 overs. The 16-run win on Saturday helped Bangladesh level the ongoing three-match series 1-1. In the must-win match for the Bangladeshi team, Miraz opted to bat first after winning the toss, but a career-best 4-35 by fast bowler Asitha Fernando helped Sri Lanka bundle them out for 248 inside 46 overs. The 27-year-old right-arm seamer, fresh from an English county stint with Glamorgan, used a mix of short-pitched venom and clever changes of pace to restrict the visitors. The home side's bowlers hunted in packs, with leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga claiming 3-60, backed up by some sharp fielding and catching. Several batsmen got starts, but none went on to capitalise. Najmul Hossain Shanto looked set before throwing his wicket away by mistiming a long hop straight to long-on when on 14. Shamim Hossain (22) and Mehidy Hasan Miraz (9) fared no better, both falling to the short-ball trap by holing out to fine-leg. The 23-year-old Parvez Hossain Emon struck a fluent 67 off 69 deliveries to register his maiden ODI half-century with five fours and three sixes. Towhid Hridoy scored 51 off 69 balls, but Bangladesh's inability to stitch together partnerships proved costly as wickets fell at regular intervals. From 218-9, a spirited last-wicket stand between Tanzim Hasan Sakib and Mustafizur Rahman added 30 runs that could yet prove crucial. Tanzim hit 33 off 21 balls with two fours and two sixes but was left stranded when Mustafizur perished without troubling the scorers. In the second half of the match, wicketkeeper-batter Kusal Mendis and Janith Liyanage scored half-centuries for the Sri Lankan team, but they failed to help the hosts get the better of Bangladesh for the second match in a row and seal the series. The third and final ODI between the two teams is scheduled to take place at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Tuesday, July 8.

Bangladesh fight back to level ODI series in Sri Lanka
Tanvir Islam's maiden five-wicket haul and Parvez Hossain Emon's maiden half-century have helped touring Bangladesh beat Sri Lanka by 16 runs in the second one-day international, levelling the series. Bangladesh were out for 248 in the 46th over at R. Premadasa Stadium and Sri Lanka looked to be cruising at 2-75 before being reduced to 8-170, needing 79 more runs. The ninth-wicket stand between Janith Liyanage and Dushmantha Chameera knocked off 58 runs but the pressure told in the end. The series stands at 1-1 with the decider on Tuesday in Pallekele. Bangladesh lost their first wicket with the total on 10 when Tanzid Hasan (7) edged fast bowler Asitha Fernando to wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis. Emon and Najmul Hossain Shanto overcame the early loss of Tanzid Hasan with 63 runs for the second wicket. Shanto was out for 14 to Sri Lanka captain Charith Asalanka but Emon lasted for 67 off 69 deliveries until he failed to read a googly from leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga. Emon hit three sixes and six boundaries. Towhid Hridoy's 51 off 69, including only two boundaries, pushed Bangladesh and there were useful contributions from Tanzim Hasan Sakib (33 off 21), Jaker Ali (24) and Shamim Hossain (22). Fernando took 4-35 and Hasaranga 3-60. Chasing 249 to win, Sri Lanka lost opener Pathum Nissanka for 5 but Kusal Mendis and Nishan Madushka shared 69 for the second wicket with the former brought up his 34th ODI half-century in just 20 deliveries, striking 56 off 31 deliveries, including a six and nine boundaries. Sri Lanka slumped to 6-132 in the 30th over, still needing more than 100 runs. Janith Liyanage (78) did his best with two sixes and seven boundaries but it was not enough to prevent Bangladesh claiming the win.

Bangladesh hold nerve to level ODI series with Sri Lanka
Chasing 249, Sri Lanka were down in the dumps at 170-8. A fighting 78 by Janith Liyanage brought the hosts back from the brink and set hearts racing in the packed stands. Needing 27 off the final three overs, Liyanage lofted the first ball of the 48th over into the stands, reducing the equation to 21 off 20 and sending the Colombo crowd into jubilant mood. But the joy was short-lived. Mustafizur Rahman slipped in a clever off-cutter next ball that Liyanage spooned straight back for a return catch. That proved the turning point, as Bangladesh wrestled back control and closed out a hard-fought win. If there was one man who turned the tide for the visitors, it was Tanvir Islam. The left-arm spinner, playing just his second ODI, rebounded from a torrid start to produce career-best figures of 5-39 -- a match-winning spell that derailed Sri Lanka's chase. Tanvir had a rude welcome to the R Premadasa Stadium as Kusal Mendis took him to the cleaners early on. 'Nothing to lose' His first two overs went for 22 runs, including a 17-run second over where Mendis cut, drove and pulled with disdain. Mendis brought up his half-century in just 20 balls -- the fastest ODI fifty at the venue, surpassing Thisara Perera's 23-ball effort against England in 2014. But just as Mendis threatened to take the game away, Bangladesh threw the ball back to Tanvir -- and were rewarded for their faith. Mendis danced down the track attempting to whip one on the leg-side, missed it completely, and although the on-field umpire turned down the appeal, the decision was overturned on review. Sri Lanka, who were 75-2 after 10 overs, went into their shells. The spinners tightened the screws and wickets fell in quick succession. Tanvir found excellent support from the off-spin duo of captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Shamim Hossain. The pair bowled stump-to-stump, extracting just enough grip to force errors from the batters who had painted themselves into a corner. With every misjudged prod and risky swipe, Sri Lanka dug themselves deeper into trouble. Bangladesh had loaded their side with three seamers anticipating a pace-friendly surface, but it was the spinners who spun a web around the hosts. Earlier, a career-best 4-35 by seamer Asitha Fernando helped Sri Lanka bundle out Bangladesh for 248 inside 46 overs. The 27-year-old right-arm seamer, fresh from an English county stint with Glamorgan, used a mix of short-pitched venom and clever changes of pace to restrict the visitors. "We are playing at home and we haven't delivered in this game," Sri Lankan skipper Charith Asalanka said. "We know we have work to do and we will have a chat and try to bounce back in the final game." The third and final ODI will be played on July 8, followed by three Twenty20 games. "We are a young side and we have fought so well in the series, and we have nothing to lose", Bangladesh captain Mehidy said. "We will go and give our best".
