High-Severity Windows Flaw Revealed by Security Expert
Home » Emerging technologies » Cyber Security » High-Severity Windows Flaw Revealed by Security Expert Positive Technologies has revealed a high-severity vulnerability affecting 37 desktop and server Windows operating systems. The flaw impacts Windows 11, Windows 10, Server 2025, Server 2022, and Server 2019 across various versions and architectures. The vulnerability, identified as CVE-2025-49689, was discovered by Sergey Tarasov, Specialist at the Positive Technologies Expert Security Center. It affects the NTFS file system driver and was assigned a CVSS 3.1 severity score of 7.8. The flaw could have enabled privilege escalation if a user opened a malicious virtual hard disk (VHD). This would allow attackers to bypass Windows security and gain full control of the system. Microsoft was notified under responsible disclosure protocols and released patches in July 2025. • Over 1.5 million devices are reportedly exposed • U.S. and China account for the largest number of affected systems StatCounter data shows Windows 11's market share rose from below 30% in 2024 to over 43% by May 2025. Tarasov explained that attackers often use VHD files in phishing campaigns. Many users treat these files like ordinary archives, increasing the risk of exploitation. Positive Technologies recommends users install the latest Windows updates. If updates cannot be applied, users should only open VHD files from trusted sources. The company also advises deploying its tools, including MaxPatrol VM and MaxPatrol EDR, to detect and prevent similar threats. In 2024, Tarasov helped address another vulnerability, CVE-2024-43629, affecting Windows 10, 11, and Server editions. In 2017, the PT Expert Security Center collaborated with Microsoft to resolve CVE-2017-0263.

Clearing Up Jet Greaves' Contract Status
All the talk about Jet Greaves is how he has a one-way contract for this upcoming season, and how he and Merzļikins will be the goalie tandem for 2025-26. But there's one thing about Jet Greaves and his contract situation that has been slightly overlooked, and it could be a big deal. Let me stress that it probably WON'T be a big deal, but there's always a chance. Advertisement Many informed fans have pointed out that Greaves will not only be a UFA after the upcoming season, but will be a Group 6 UFA. Group 6 UFA means that when a player reaches RFA status by a certain age (25) and hasn't played enough games (28), they become a UFA and can sign with whomever they want. Per 'for goalies, this is 28 games with more than 30 minutes of ice time.' The last factor includes professional seasons played(4). Many players around the league walk when they hit G6 status. The Blue Jackets must do whatever they can to make sure Greaves hits RFA status, which shouldn't be an issue. It also explains, at least it's what I'm choosing to believe, the reason why we saw so much of Jet last season, especially at random times when both Merzļikins and Tarasov were healthy. Get those games in last season, so that this season he could finish off the requirements to remove the Group 6 UFA status in fewer games? Sounds legit. Let's clear up the Jet Greaves situation. Greaves will be 25 when his deal expires next year. As of right now, he's played in 21 NHL games and started 20 of those games. According to the Group 6 UFA rules, he'll need to play in at least 7 games for at least 30 minutes each to check that box in terms of removing the G6 status. He already has the professional seasons box checked at 4, given that he's played at the ECHL, AHL, and NHL levels. Advertisement So, that's it. There's no need to worry about Greaves hitting Group 6, or at least that's the hope. Barring injuries, of course, I would imagine Greaves probably gets 25-30 starts at minimum, not to mention any games he'll come in to relieve Elvis should he get pulled in the first 30 minutes of a game. So, there you have it. It seems that there is no reason to worry about Jet Greaves and his contract status. I would assume they try to get him signed to an extension at some point this season or just after. If Jet comes in and locks down the starters job, I expect a good deal in Greaves' future. Why are the Stanley Cup Champions still making moves? Panthers land Blue Jackets' Daniil Tarasov
Why Florida Traded for Russian Goalie Daniil Tarasov Post-Stanley Cup (Imagn Images) Fresh off their second straight Stanley Cup victory, the Florida Panthers aren't taking a breather. While the champagne is still flowing in South Florida, the franchise has quietly added another piece to their roster puzzle. On Thursday, the Panthers officially announced the acquisition of Russian goaltender Daniil Tarasov from the Columbus Blue Jackets, parting with a fifth-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft in return. Daniil Tarasov to Florida: What the Panthers' latest trade says about their 2025 ambitions Though the spotlight remains on their dominant title run over the Edmonton Oilers, this trade hints at the organization's forward-thinking approach—especially regarding goaltending depth. With veteran Sergei Bobrovsky still commanding the crease, Tarasov could serve as a promising understudy or even see regular ice time if plans shift over the offseason. Tarasov, 26, hails from Novokuznetsk, Russia, and has spent the past four seasons with Columbus after being drafted in the third round (86th overall) of the 2017 NHL Draft. While his NHL numbers so far reflect growing pains—posting a 19-34-6 record with a 3.44 GAA and a .898 save percentage—he showed flashes of brilliance, including a 26-save shutout against the New York Rangers on January 18, 2025. Still, his ice time in Columbus diminished late in the season as the Blue Jackets shifted their focus to rising goaltender Jet Greaves, effectively pushing Tarasov down the depth chart. That move made him expendable, and the Panthers saw an opportunity. 'On behalf of the Blue Jackets, I'd like to thank Daniil for his contributions to our organization over the past four years,' Blue Jackets general manager Don Waddell said. 'He is an outstanding young man, and we wish he and his family well in the future.' Now, Tarasov finds himself at a crucial point in his career. Set to become a restricted free agent on July 1, the Panthers must decide whether to offer him a new deal. If re-signed, he could compete for the backup role behind Bobrovsky or gain more seasoning with the Charlotte Checkers in the AHL. That decision may also hinge on Vitek Vanecek's future. Acquired from the San Jose Sharks, Vanecek is poised to hit unrestricted free agency. If Florida opts to retain him on a short-term deal, Tarasov's NHL role may have to wait. Still, this low-risk trade adds a young, skilled goaltender to a franchise that clearly isn't content with just celebrating. Tarasov brings international experience, raw potential, and the hunger to prove himself—and in a championship-winning environment like Florida, the timing couldn't be better. Florida Panthers trade for Blue Jackets goaltender Daniil Tarasov
The Florida Panthers have acquired Daniil Tarasov from the Columbus Blue Jackets as a strategic move to strengthen their goaltending depth. The trade was announced by President of Hockey Operations & General Manager Bill Zito, according to which Florida will be parting with their fifth-round pick (160th overall) in the 2025 NHL Draft. Daniil Tarasov, the 26-year-old goaltender from Novokuznetsk, Russia, has shown impressive performances in his young career. In the 2024-25 season, Tarasov played 20 games for the Blue Jackets, posting a 7-10-2 record with a .881 save percentage and a 3.54 goals-against average (GAA). He came into the limelight this season on January 18, when he recorded his first NHL shutout, stopping all 26 shots in a matchup against the New York Rangers. Apart from the NHL, Tarasov has also competed in the American Hockey League (AHL) with the Cleveland Monsters, Columbus' affiliate. In his two appearances during the 2024-25 season, Tarasov posted a 1-1-0 record, a .908 save percentage, and a 2.96 GAA. Daniil Tarasov was originally a third-round pick (86th overall) by Columbus in the 2017 NHL Draft. Notably, Tarasov has played 65 NHL games with Columbus (2021-22 to 2024-25), holding a 19-34-6 record, a .898 save percentage, and 3.44 GAA, alongside 34 AHL games with a 17-12-3 record. Before arriving in North America, Tarasov was a part of Russia's Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) with Salavat Yulaev Ufa. Across 18 games in the 2018-19 and 2020-21 seasons, he recorded a commendable 11-4-3 record, a .924 save percentage, and a 2.13 GAA. On the international stage, Tarasov earned a bronze medal at the 2019 IIHF U20 World Junior Championship (2-0-0 record) and competed in the 2016 IIHF U18 World Junior Championship, where he posted a 2-1-0 record with a .921 save percentage.

Panthers get goalie Daniil Tarasov from Blue Jackets, Wild trade center Freddy Gaudreau to Kraken
The back-to-back Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers acquired goaltender Daniil Tarasov from the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday, sending a fifth-round draft pick in exchange for Sergei Bobrovsky's new backup and potential future successor. Tarasov, 26, is a restricted free agent who is 10 years younger than Bobrovsky, who has backstopped the Panthers to consecutive championships. They come from the same Siberian town of Novokuznetsk, and Tarasov's father, Vadim, was Bobrovsky's idol. The Blue Jackets are getting the 160th pick in this weekend's draft. 'On behalf of the Blue Jackets, I'd like to thank Daniil for his contributions to our organization over the past four years,' Columbus general manager Don Waddell said. 'He is an outstanding young man, and we wish he and his family well in the future.' Filling that spot with Vitek Vanecek expected to depart as an unrestricted free agent, Florida now turns to trying to re-sign some combination of playoff MVP Sam Bennett, trade-deadline pickup Brad Marchand and longtime cornerstone defenseman Aaron Ekblad. Among other moves around the NHL, the Minnesota Wild traded veteran center Freddy Gaudreau to the Seattle Kraken for a fourth-round pick. Gaudreau, 32, has three years remaining on his contract with an annual average value of $2.1 million. He had 18 goals and 19 assists while playing in all 82 regular-season games in 2024-25 before going without a point in six playoff games for Minnesota. The pick from the Kraken is the 102nd in the draft and gives the Wild five selections this weekend. They have only one, No. 52 in the second round, in the top 100. Gaudreau has 152 points in 410 career games over eight NHL seasons, including three with Nashville and one with Pittsburgh. 'Frederick's a versatile skater who plays a strong two-way game,' Kraken general manager Jason Botterill said. 'He gives us depth down the middle and has the ability to produce offensively. He's a player that can be trusted on the defensive side of the puck, especially on the penalty kill. We're excited to welcome him to the team.' These trades come on the heels of Utah acquiring two-time 25-goal scorer JJ Peterka from Buffalo early Thursday for forward Josh Doan and defenseman Michael Kesselring. More action is expected with the first round Friday night and Rounds 2-7 on Saturday.
