Frustration over Melrose water supply

SANDAKAN: Residents in Taman Melrose and nearby areas are again facing water supply issues, said Sandakan Indian Association (Baru) Patron Taren Sunil Manoharan. Households in Taman Melrose, Mile 3½, and Jalan Utara, reported extremely low water pressure or no water at all since July 6. 'The pressure is so weak that water doesn't even reach their reserve tanks. In some houses, it's just a dribble. 'How are families supposed to manage daily chores like cooking, cleaning or using the toilet?' he said. 'This is not the first time. People are tired. Every time this happens, we highlight it, but there's no consistent solution from the authorities,' he said. Taren said while technical issues may occur, there must be better communication and temporary measures such as deploying water tankers to badly affected areas. 'At the very least, inform the public and help them get through the day. Staying silent only adds to the frustration,' he said. Neglect threatens to turn park into dumping ground

SANDAKAN: The Sandakan Indian Association (SIA) (Baru) Patron, Taren Sunil Manoharan, has urged the Sandakan Municipal Council (MPS) and relevant authorities to prioritise the maintenance of Ujana Elopura Recreational Park, warning that neglect could reduce the park to a potential dumpsite. Located at Mile 2.5 North Road, the parkformerly known as Padang Baru was converted from a football field into a community park equipped with jogging tracks and other amenities. 'Ujana Elopura is one of the few remaining green lungs in Sandakan. It's disheartening to see it slowly deteriorate,' Taren said, pointing to clogged drains, litter-strewn areas and overgrown grass as signs of poor maintenance. He noted that while public responsibility plays a role, the authorities must ensure adequate facilities such as rubbish bins, prompt collection services and regular upkeep of the grounds. 'Once the rot sets in, it's much harder to fix,' he said. He emphasised that he lack of regular maintenance, including unmanaged grass and garbage, could turn the area into a breeding ground for mosquitoes and pests, worsening Sandakan's ongoing dengue situation. However, Taren commended the recent development of a skatepark within the park, calling it a positive step to engage youth and encourage small-scale entrepreneurship. 'The Skate Board Park is a wonderful addition, but its surrounding areas must also be properly maintained to unlock its full potential,' he said. Taren called on elected representatives and MPS to ensure public recreational spaces are kept clean, safe, and accessible. 'This is not a luxury, it's a basic expectation from the people,' he said. Sabah special athletes shine at national meet

Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah contingent to the National Special Olympics Junior Development Sports Championships (S-JDSC) 2025 has made the State proud by securing a total of 16 medals consisting of 6 golds, 8 silvers and 2 bronzes at the national-level tournament held on June 28-29 in Ipoh, Perak. Led by head of delegation Rusmani Binjin and team manager Taren Sunil Manoharan, the team exceeded expectations with stellar performances across three sporting categories: athletics, badminton, and bocce. 'It was a tremendous boost to the confidence of our athletes. They proved they could rise to the occasion and excel even at the national level,' said an elated Taren, who is also Vice-Chairman of Special Olympics Sabah and Chairman of the Sandakan Chapter. The championship saw participation of 532 athletes representing 13 contingents from across Malaysia. Sabah's gold medallists were Mohd Safri Ramis (shot putt); Daniel Fraez Felgius (long jump); Rickyden Heron (badminton men's singles); Esam Isa (bocce men's singles); Malisa Musrikin (bocce women's singles); and Natasha Nordin and Ainul Mardiani (bocce women's doubles). The silver medals were won by Yusri Ramli (long jump, mixed relay); Intan Azwana Ibrahim (shot putt); Sherlyn Rimond (badminton); Mohd Rafizwan Achmat and Mohammad Al Azierul Ajmain (badminton doubles); Delbert Chok (bocce men's singles); Natasha Nordin (bocce women's singles), Delbert Chok and Chia Vui Ken (bocce men's doubles); and Marissa Masiun, Ayumie Farain Abdullah and Iqram Muhaimin Abdullah (mixed relay). The bronze medals came from Chia Vui Ken and Ainul Mardiana (bocce mixed team) and Marissa Masiun (long jump). The Sabah contingent's athletics team was coached by Umi Kalsum Isa and Masdorah Bzamban; the badminton team by Fiona Baru and Rick Bett Rick Charles; and the bocce athletes were guided by Ahmad Aiden Asyraf Majanggong, Chang Chun Moi @ Maria J. Chang and Florence James. Taren expressed hope that the Sabah team's remarkable achievements will serve as a catalyst for greater public and private sector support for Special Olympics initiatives in the State. 'This success will motivate us to organise more sports programmes for individuals with special needs. It's high time that the public becomes more aware of the important work being done by Special Olympics Sabah and our Sandakan chapter.' Persistent Sandakan water woes

SANDAKAN: Sandakan residents continue to endure water disruptions with little improvement despite repeated government assurances, said Sandakan Indian Association Patron Taren Sunil Manoharan. 'We keep hearing that solutions are coming, but the dry taps tell a different story,' he said, adding that families are struggling daily with no relief in sight. The latest outage hit Taman Melrose at Mile 3½, Jalan Utara, where low pressure began on May 23, followed by a complete cut-off by May 28. Though supply resumed a day later, weak pressure persisted, disrupting households and schools. 'Unplanned outages add unnecessary stress, especially for working parents and children,' he said. Water woes plague much of Sabah, with frequent pipe bursts and machinery failures cited as causes. While scheduled maintenance is understandable, Taren criticised delayed responses to emergencies, such as unrepaired leaks wasting treated water. 'I reported a major pipe leak in a housing area, but instead of immediate action, the entire neighbourhood was left dry for days before repairs even started,' he said. Frustration also mounts over the Water Department's unresponsive CareLine, leaving residents without updates. Taren urged ministers and local leaders to act decisively. 'A senior minister once hinted at restructuring the Water Department and an MP demanded dismissals. But we need real action, not just talk,' he said. While demanding accountability, Taren acknowledged that underfunding and ageing infrastructure may be key hurdles. 'If funding is the issue, the government must admit it. Frontline staff should not bear all the blame. Sabahans have suffered too long, this crisis must end,' he said.
