Breach in Rajpur canal embankment in Kanpur Dehat, water enter homes
Kanpur: The breach in the Rajpur canal embankment late on Monday night severely impacted the daily lives of residents. Water from the canal seeped into homes, damaging essential household items and inundating a significant number of farmlands. The breach occurred at approximately 1 am along the Rajpur canal embankment situated on Damanpur Road in Kanpur Dehat. The local administration has deployed teams to assess the damage and provide immediate relief to affected families. Emergency response crews are also working round-the-clock to restore basic services. Several villagers reported losing important documents and valuables in the sudden flooding. The irrigation department has initiated a technical survey to understand the structural weaknesses that led to the embankment failure. The incident highlighted the need for regular maintenance of canal infrastructure and prompt response to community concerns. Local authorities are planning to implement an early warning system and establish better communication channels with residents living near canal embankments. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Este Programa Está Revolucionando el Alivio de Deudas National Debt Relief Undo A committee has also been formed to investigate if there were any lapses in canal maintenance and water management. Tariq Khan, a junior engineer from the irrigation department, visited the site after receiving notification. He explained that all gauges from Alampur Jhal were opened to facilitate canal flow for paddy cultivation, as requested by farmers. "Restoration work on the damaged embankment is in progress," he said, further adding, "The incident inflicted considerable losses on the local community. Peredur Owen Griffiths MS on Newport's positive points
Between YouTube vloggers focusing on the most run-down areas and sneering articles from London-based newspapers, this close-knit and diverse community has been in the crossfire it seems. I have seen first-hand some of the problems that exist in this area of the city from my work with the police, the Gwent Drug and Alcohol service and numerous visits to businesses and projects since my election in 2021. Yes, there are issues, and I would like to see them addressed as swiftly as possible in a compassionate and generous manner. Poverty is a major root cause of many of the problems we face in society, which is why Plaid Cymru will make tackling it a major priority if the people choose us to form the next government of Wales. But I also recognise there are a lot of positives to be found in Pill. The thing that people producing 'hit' pieces of this ilk tend to ignore is the community spirit, diversity and vibrancy found in this community. I find myself in Pill Mill regularly for meetings and events. I have also canvassed and leafletted the streets a fair bit, and what I tend to find is that people are, without exception, friendly and welcoming. This was something I found earlier this week when I met the people involved with The Open Pantry and The Open Kitchen project at its launch which has been set up to tackle poverty across the city. The initiative is being guided by Pill local Tariq Khan who, whilst acknowledging the problems that exist in this part of the city, chooses to focus on the positive. His approach - characterised by collaboration, friendliness and clarity of purpose - was the perfect antidote to the negativity of some. I have no doubt that Tariq and his team of staff and volunteers will have a positive impact on addressing poverty and inequality for the most vulnerable in society. The aim is to get to a situation whereby projects like these are not needed because poverty has been addressed and no child is going hungry. Until we get there, it is heartwarming that there are people like Tariq and his team who go about their work with compassion, providing dignity to the vulnerable people they serve. In the end, that matters much more to the community than what someone in London looking down their nose thinks and writes. Peredur Owen Griffiths is member of the Senedd for South Wales East.

Commuting costlier after fuel shock
In response to the sharp increase in petrol and diesel prices, transporters across the board on Tuesday raised fares on all long-route, inter-district, intra-city, and local routes, including the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad. Fares on all local routes in the twin cities were increased by Rs10 to Rs20. The sudden increase in fares led to frequent disputes between passengers and conductors throughout the day. Pakistan Railways has also decided to increase fares, with an official circular expected within 24 hours. Intra-city transport services such as wagons, taxis, Suzuki vans, Qingqi rickshaws, and motorcycle ride-hailing services (like Bykea) all significantly raised their rates. As a result of higher transportation costs, prices of essential goods, including food items, fruits, and vegetables, are also expected to rise. According to the Transport Federation, Intercity Transport Union, and Taxi Rickshaw Union, the fare hike was unavoidable due to the petrol price reaching Rs266.79 per litre and diesel Rs277.98 per litre. In addition, the new federal budget has increased the prices of vehicle spare parts, traffic challans (fines), and tyres by 35% to 40%, further straining the transport sector Asif Khan, Vice President of the Transport Federation, says the rising costs of fuel, spare parts, and tyres are severely damaging the transport business. Tariq Khan, President of the Rickshaw and Taxi Union, says fare hikes are inevitable with rising fuel prices and has urged the public not to be angry, noting that employee salaries have also been increased. Abdullah Khan, Secretary of the Suzuki Drivers Union, says Suzuki fares have gone up by Rs10 per passenger. Bykea drivers have increased their fares from Rs100 to Rs150, while rickshaw drivers are now charging Rs300 instead of Rs200, with the minimum rickshaw fare now set at Rs200. On routes such as Raja Bazaar to Kacheri, Rawat, Sihala, Adiala Jail, Adiala Village, Golra, Bari Imam, and Pirwadhai, fares have been increased by Rs20 per passenger. Stop-to-stop fares have risen from Rs20 to Rs30. Citizens like Basharat Iqbal Raja and Sharif Qureshi have criticised the government's decision, pointing out that global oil prices have dropped to a historic low of $65 per barrel, yet Pakistan has increased domestic prices. They termed it a cruel move and demanded immediate price reductions. Citizens noted that during the PTI government, global oil prices were around $120 per barrel while petrol in Pakistan was priced between Rs150155 per litre. Now, with global prices nearly halved, the government should provide relief by reducing petrol prices to Rs150 per litre.

Pill residents hit out at Mail's rundown city story
The issues covered in the report are familiar to Argus readers, and the figures are ones we have reported before. But we also report the many positive things happening in the city (not town as the Mail called it), and we will covering in more depth a number of issues raised in the Mail in the coming days. Today we started by talking to the residents of Pill, which had been highlighted in the report as "in a state of decay", with "drug addicted residents wandering the streets". Here is what we found... Rachel Clark, who works at Newport Support Network (NSN), said: 'I'm Pill, born and bred. The place has had some troubles recently but so has everywhere. Pill is on the up because people are positive here and here at the Newport Support Network, we are aiming to get more positivity.' Tariq Khan, her colleague, also dismissed the Mail's account: 'They took a snapshot of a few chronic problems that are in many places. I'd rather concentrate on the positive things going on in Pillgwenlly.' Nostalgia: Pill, Newport, the oldest community in Newport Councillor Phil Hourihane, who was visiting Tariq Khan's new self-help initiatives hat serve all Newport, earlier gave me a tour of Pill. We walked for 20 minutes and he asked me about our uneventful stroll on busy streets: 'Do you see any drunk people lying in the streets? Any drug deals? Any anti-social behaviour? The Mail is just printing sensationalist rubbish!" New 2025 Pill carnival queen and her attendants chosen Zenab Farzal said: 'I was born and raised in Pill, which has long been seen as a multicultural area. For me it has always represented community and safety and the ability to live your life in your community. There are shops, services and two mosques that served and supported us. All the things we could want were here. 'Things have changed in recent years and it has become different. However, Pill is a vibrant and happy place and negative changes do happen and they can be overcome." Mark Hayes said: 'The Mail is a Tory rag and I don't read it or believe it. I just wish they'd do reports on real issues, like why they can't cut taxes for local businesses, so they can compete with big corporations and make things better and serve their communities. 'Moving big stores to out-of-town is bad news for local businesses because it reduces visitors on foot and that should be in the news, not these political hit-job stories designed to provoke a reaction." Mason Mathias, said: 'Well, who knows what's going on? I didn't take the report seriously. Maybe more police to sort problems, who knows? As for empty shops and no hope, Pill is buzzing compared to the centre of town. I'm only 19, rescuing Newport is for the politicians and businesses, not me Just ignore hype and don't react.' A man who gave his name as Richard, said: 'Our problems are spiritual. We cannot survive without God in our lives. If you want to make a difference, bring it through building God's word in your communities and families. I go to Emmanuel Church, join me there and make things better.' Pill has benefitted from a number of developments in recent years including the £17m Pill Primary School on Mendalgief Road, alongside the Victoria Court housing scheme by Lovell. There's also new play equipment next to St Michael's Primary School. The regeneration of Constable Close by Linc Cymru is nearing completion and Kirby Daniel Court, homes for the over 55's, have been fully redeveloped. In 2023, Newport Council revealed a new 'masterplan' for regenerating the Pill neighbourhood. Commercial Road will be rejuvenated at 'the heart of Pill', with 'quality public services' and a mixture of business, shopping, leisure and community uses. A new 'green corridor' will be developed around Pill Park, bringing together outdoor play and sports areas and serving as a home for community gatherings.

Cops book self-proclaimed journos, lawyer for conspiracy & extortion
Lucknow: A city-based teacher accused a group of self-proclaimed journalists and a lawyer of orchestrating a criminal conspiracy to defame him, extort money and obstruct his legitimate construction activity. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now An FIR was registered late on Tuesday night at Bazar Khala police station under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. According to the complaint filed by Mirza Mohammad Abu Tayyab, a resident of Mansoor Nagar and teacher in Shia PG college, he was subjected to threats, misinformation campaigns and monetary extortion since initiating construction work on a legally owned 1,450 sqft property he shares with his cousin. He alleged that despite the construction being entirely legal, some individuals posing as journalists and one lawyer were blackmailing him and falsely threatening to have his building sealed or demolished by the Lucknow Development Authority (LDA). Tayyab named several accused in the FIR, including Danish Khan, Ayush Kumar, Shishunath Singh, Nitin Awasthi, Ravi Srivastava, Akhilesh Kumar Singh, Raza Abbas, Tariq Khan, Suhail Arshad, Kiran Kamal, Aziz, Harish Bhatnagar, Kamlesh, Indrashaun, Vishal Nigam, Tanmay Raj Singh (a lawyer) and eight to 10 unknown persons. Some were identified by name and mobile numbers, while others remain unidentified. Tayyab claims lawyer Tanmay extorted Rs 50,000 from him via UPI transactions under threats of official action. He also submitted copies of those transactions as evidence. The complainant further pointed out that defamatory reports were posted online, particularly two stories — one by Tariq Khan titled "LDA Breaking: Illegal Construction Continues in Zone 7 (in Hindi)" and another by Suhail Arshad, "Suspended JE Fuelling Corruption Again (in Hindi)" — alleging illegal construction near the police station with administrative connivance. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Tayyab called both reports baseless, malicious and part of a larger scheme to malign his image. DCP, West Zone, Vishwajeet Srivastava said that an FIR under BNS Section 61(2) (common intention), 308(2) (criminal conspiracy), 356(2) (extortion by threat to reputation), 356(3) (extortion through threat of official action), was registered against the named accused. "We are verifying the digital evidence and have begun preliminary inquiries," he said.
