Akal Takht committee meets Amritpal Singh's father to seek support for Panthic unity and revive Shiromani Akali Dal
1 2 Amritsar: In a move that could reshape the trajectory of Punjab's panthic politics, a committee formed by the Akal Takht to revive the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has reached out to Bapu Tarsem Singh, the father of jailed MP Amritpal Singh , in a bid to unite Sikh political voices under a common platform. The five-member panel met Tarsem Singh and his associates at their home in Jallupur Khera village, marking a significant outreach beyond the party's traditional base. Sources said the discussions centred on building a broader alliance of panthic groups and rejuvenating the SAD, whose influence has waned in recent years, among Sikh youth particularly. Even though no formal role for Amritpal Singh was disclosed, his symbolic presence loomed large over the meeting. Gurpartap Singh Wadala, a member of the committee, acknowledged Amritpal's growing appeal. "Even behind bars, he commands deep respect from Sikh youth and rural voters. His sweeping electoral win was more than personal — it was a call for principled, value-driven leadership," he said. Constituted on Dec 2, 2024, the panel had seven members originally but now includes Bibi Satwant Kaur, Manpreet Singh Ayali, Santa Singh Umaidpuri, Gurpartap Singh Wadala, and Iqbal Singh Jhunda. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Iraq: New Small Electric Car For Seniors. Tarsem Singh welcomed the outreach and said the time had come to "pull the Panth out of crisis" by consolidating panthic sentiment. Ludhiana: ASI gets 4-year jail in bribery case
The special court of judge Amrinder Singh Shergill has convicted assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Tarsem Singh in a four-year-old corruption case, sentencing him to four years of rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of ₹25,000. The conviction comes in connection with a bribery incident in 2021 when the ASI was caught red-handed while accepting ₹1,500 for executing non-bailable warrants. The convict sought leniency claiming that his wife and three children were dependent upon him and that he is the sole bread earner of his family. However, the prosecution firmly opposed the request, arguing that instead of performing his official duties with integrity, he chose to solicit a bribe from a complainant in exchange for fulfilling a basic legal responsibility. The court, in its judgement, mentioned that in these facts and circumstances, coupled with the offence, which the convict has committed, leave no scope for a lenient view against him. The case dates back to February 25, 2021, when the vigilance bureau arrested ASI Tarsem Singh, who was then posted at the division number 8 police station. He was apprehended while accepting a bribe from Rahul Kumar, a resident of New Kundanpuri, for serving a court-issued non-bailable warrant in a cheque bounce case. According to the complaint filed by Kumar, he had moved court against one Rajat Rana for issuing a dishonoured cheque. The court subsequently issued non-bailable warrants against Rana and directed the police to serve them. However, Kumar alleged that ASI Singh deliberately delayed executing the warrants. When Kumar followed up, the ASI allegedly demanded ₹2,000 as a bribe, though the amount was eventually settled at ₹1,500. Unwilling to pay the bribe, Kumar approached the Vigilance Bureau, which laid a trap. ASI Singh was caught in the act and arrested. A case was registered against him under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

Five killed in blast at illegal firecracker factory in Pb
Chandigarh: At least five people were killed and 34 injured on Friday in a blast at a double-storey illegal firecracker factory located on the outskirts of a village in Punjab's Muktsar district, police said. Most of the victims were migrants from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. The factory, owned by Tarsem Singh, who is associated with the state-ruled AAP, in Singhwala village, was reduced to rubble owing to the intensity of the blast, trapping many under debris. According to the police, the blast occurred at midnight. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals, including All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bathinda, and most of them were stated to be out of danger. Senior Superintendent of Police, Muktsar Sahib, Akhil Chaudhary, said the blast occurred in one of the rooms in the manufacturing setup of the unit, which led to the collapse of the roof. Many people got trapped under the debris, and rescue operations were launched immediately after the police received information about the incident. Deputy Superintendent of Police Jaspal Singh said five bodies had been recovered from the debris, and 29 injured individuals were rushed to AIIMS Bathinda and hospitals in Muktsar. Rescue teams were still on the scene, working to clear the rubble and search for survivors, if any. The exact cause of the blast is being worked out, but initial investigation suggests that the blast occurred from potash used in manufacturing crackers. Muktsar Deputy Commissioner Abhijit Kaplish told the media that no permission was granted to the manufacturing unit under the Explosives Rules of 2008. 'An application was made by the owners, but reports from different departments were pending, so no permission was granted,' he clarified. Scattered shoes, broken glass panes and vehicles were seen all over the accident spot, as rescuers were sifting through the rubble in search of survivors. Shiromani Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Badal has demanded a probe into the incident and urged the government to promptly release adequate compensation to the victims' families. Describing the incident as unfortunate, Agriculture Minister Gurmeet Khudian said the factory owner is a supporter of the AAP, but that does not permit anyone to engage in illegal activity. 'The law will take its own course,' he added.
