SG60 It's Giving Fest kicks off two-day celebration with local singers Lullaboy, Tasha Low and even a surprise song from Tyler Ten

With less than a month left till the nation's birthday, SG60 celebrations are in full swing across Singapore that you'd be spoilt for choice every weekend. At least this weekend, my choice was obvious. I was curious about the buzz around Mediacorp's Cloud 9 music festival, which had its inaugural run earlier this year. It kicked off its return on Saturday (Jul 12) with a free concert as part of It's Giving Fest, a youth-driven initiative organised by Over two days at *SCAPE, It's Giving Fest aims to spotlight the voices, dreams and aspirations of Singapore's youth while empowering them to take action in social and community initiatives. And in my experience as its target demographic, it lived up to its mission. Saturday's lineup for the Cloud 9 concert showcased a range of homegrown talents, including Lullaboy, Tasha Low, Alyph, Shye and Ben Hum. The evening opened with sets from local DJs Kohsh and Kiara, who delivered a mix of pulsing beats and remixes of pop classics, such as Ed Sheeran's Shape Of You and Carly Rae Jepsen's Call Me Maybe. No lacklustre audiences here, for sure. The crowd responded with enthusiasm, jumping, waving glow sticks and singing along – as youths do – setting the tone for the night. Personally, I found one highlight to be singer Lullaboy. Or at least his undeniable charisma. He surprised the audience by announcing his upcoming album, set to be released around Valentine's Day next year, before debuting a new track off the album I Didn't Like You But I Love You. And when he tossed his T-shirt merchandise into the adoring crowd, it sent fans into a frenzy. Another standout performance came from Singaporean actress and singer Tasha Low. Fresh off the Star Awards stage where she took home the Top 10 Most Popular Female Artistes trophy, it was easy to see why. She performed her new single Everything You Wanted, before bringing out her surprise guest for a duet. Who knew Emerald Hill co-star Tyler Ten, who won Best Rising Star and Most Popular Rising Stars at the recent Star Awards, was a singer too? The duo performed the theme song from the drama series, as fans cheered for their on-stage chemistry, rooted in their on-screen partnership. Before leaving the stage, Low hinted that she and Ten would be collaborating again for an upcoming drama series, much to fans' delight. Earlier in the afternoon too, local busker Jeff Ng serenaded an outdoor crowd with popular songs, including a soulful rendition of Taylor Swift's Love Story and Bruno Mars' Just the Way You Are. It's Giving Fest on Saturday also spotlighted eight original short films and five songs created by youths around the theme "building our Singapore together". Under the SG60 Flex Your Passion Open Call and Mentorship Programme, these students from Institutes of Higher Learning were guided by film mentors such as He Shuming, Don Aravind, Tariq Mansor and Nicole Midori Woodford, as well as music mentors Shazza, Lullaboy and Shye. 'Events like these help us grow our confidence, especially when we see our work showcased to a wider audience. The entire community is here with us, and it feels great to see the support we get," shared Krisha, one of the creators behind the short film Lion Heart. Other highlights on Saturday included two cosplay runway shows - one organised by Pause for a Cause, Singapore's first cosplay volunteer community. The group uses cosplay to raise funds and bring joy to others, such as via hospital visits for children. The second was an independent showcase featuring a diverse cast of cosplayers, each bringing beloved characters to life with extensive detail in costumes and makeup. Said Acting Minister for Culture, Community and Youth David Neo: "This SG60 festival is a showcase and celebration of our youth's immense creativity, and desire to give back to the community. This is part of the government's effort to give our youths a stronger voice for their hopes and dreams, a platform to put their passion into action, and enable youths to take the lead in social and community action.' It's Giving Fest will continue on Sunday from 11am to 9.30pm at *SCAPE, including a fresh lineup for Mediacorp's Cloud 9 concert starting at 7pm. Attendees can look forward to performances by local singers like Benjamin Kheng, Shazza, Fariz Jabba and more. It's Giving Fest is organised by in partnership with SG Youth Plan and Mediacorp Cloud 9.

Tasha Low's fans helping her get votes for Star Awards with tear-off posters

It seems Tasha Low's fans actually prefer to do things the old school way. The former member of South Korean girl group Skarf is in the running for Top 10 Most Popular Female Artistes as well as for Best Supporting Actress for her performance as a holographic celebrity in Coded Love at the Star Awards on Jul 6. Recently, one of Low's fan accounts, @fortashaaloww, shared on Instagram that they had put up tear-off posters of the 31-year-old in various places around town to help her canvass for votes. One of the posters was pasted on a pillar of a HDB flat while another was seen on a lamp post next to a pedestrian crossing on Bain Street in Bras Basah. The posters included this message: "Have you voted for this cutie?" and a photo of the Emerald Hill star. There were also detachable strips with messages such as "Vote for Tasha" and cute emoticons at the bottom of the poster. The adorable initiative soon caught Low's attention, and she reposted a video and a picture of it on her Instagram story. When reached out to Low, she told us she was really surprised when she saw the story her fans posted. "It was so sweet and thoughtful – they're absolutely adorable!" she said. Low, however, did feel a little shy to see her face all over town. "I did feel a little paiseh (embarrassed) though, haha!," she laughed. Be ready to thank them on Jul 6, though.

‘Emerald Hill's' Chantalle Ng on lessons learnt playing the villainous character Zhang An Na, her next project and more

Above Behind the scenes of 'Emerald Hill' This prompted her to reach out for support. 'I'm so grateful for the friends who became my guiding lights through that period,' she shares, crediting her co-star Tasha Low and executive producer Loh Woon Woon for helping her navigate these challenges. 'Their steady support was a beacon when I needed it the most.' Along with getting help from her loved ones, she also looked to exercise to help her mental health. 'After filming, I'd often go for a run, as it became my passageway between reel and real,' she says, highlighting the importance of eating well and surrounding herself with good people. For Ng, stepping into her mother's formidable shoes has been both a professional milestone and a deeply personal journey. In an interview with Tatler Singapore, the rising star shares her experiences on set, lessons learnt playing Zhang and what's next for her. Above Ng plays Zhang An Na in 'Emerald Hill' Why did you decide to venture into the entertainment industry? I grew up watching my mother on TV. She's my biggest role model and I've always been so proud of her. I wanted to step onto the screen myself and continue the path she's paved. What was the dynamic like between you, Ferlyn Wong and Tasha Low both on and off the Emerald Hill set? Tasha and I couldn't help but giggle whenever we had scenes together—I even had to beg her to leave the set just so I could finish a take without bursting into laughter. Ferlyn, on the other hand, was our steady anchor. She grounded us and really helped us dive into character. How did your interactions with Peranakan experts influence your performance? We had the opportunity to work with Peranakan experts during the filming of the show. They taught me how to walk, talk and even cook like a true Peranakan. I'm so grateful for their guidance and for the glimpse they gave me into what life was like in that era. Above Ng and her mother, Lin Meijiao, a veteran actress in Singapore Has playing An Na changed your perspective on villainous characters or the way you approach roles in general? Definitely. There's a Chinese saying '可恨之人必有可悲之处' which means behind every villain is a broken person craving love. Playing Anna was such a ride, digging into her fears and insecurities, then presenting her as someone so calculated and fearless. I loved the complexity of the role. Anna was also very counterintuitive. As an actress, you're often taught that being well-liked is the ultimate goal. But this time, that belief was shattered. I realised that my craft could speak louder than likeability. This journey has been humbling, reflective and full of growth. The series quickly became a hit. Why do you think the show resonated so strongly with viewers? There's a deep nostalgia to this project and every single person on the production gave it their all to bring that legacy to life. And to me, a drama may start and end, but the legacy of Yamamoto Yueniang is #forever. What motivates you to keep going? Something in me still wants to keep going. Because I love this craft deeply. Because I love the people who make it all worth it. Above While Ng was excited about the role, she quickly learnt the mental strain it would have on her Above To prepare for Zhang's complex character, Ng delved deep into the character's emotional world If you could switch roles with any character on Emerald Hill , who would it be and why? When I auditioned for Anna, Anya, and Xinniang, I was asked if there was any role I especially wanted—or didn't want. I said I didn't think I could portray Anya. Her backstory is so heavy—forced into prostitution, dealt a life of cruelty by fate. But if I ever get the chance again, I'd love to challenge that role. To prove to myself that if I allow myself to be vulnerable enough, I can step into anyone's world. What's next? My new drama is The Gift Of Time . I'm acting alongside Xie Shao Guang—his first show after leaving the industry 16 years ago. Being cast as his daughter and being able to work with him feels like a dream. I've also been given another once-in-a-lifetime opportunity on the variety side—something I can't reveal just yet, but it's been keeping me up at night with excitement. Outside of work, what's next for me is to look at the world with starry eyes and to love every moment I'm given on this earth, especially with the amazing people around me. Credits
