Medical professionals have again dominated a list of Australia's highest earners, the Tax office has revealed in a new report also highlighting our wealthiest postcodes. There are many factors that go into determining how much surgeons are paid, including salary packaging, hours worked, qualifications and experience. 'Surgeons working in major metropolitan areas can be among the highest earners, but there are generous salaries on offer to tempt surgeons into more rural areas too,' according to doctor recruitment agency, Medrecruit. The country's 3658 anaesthetists sit second in terms of high-earning occupations, banking $447,193 annually. Internal medicine specialists (fourth, $342,457), psychiatrists (fifth, $286,146) and other medical practitioners (sixth, $259, 802) also rank highly based on average income. Financial dealers — which conduct financial market transactions on behalf of clients — earn the most among nonmedical roles. The 5147 people in this field banked an average of $355,233. Mining engineers (seventh, $206,423), judicial and legal professionals (eighth, $206,408) and financial investment advisors (10th, $191,986) ranked highly, as did Australia's 231,103 chief executives and managing directors (ninth, $194,987). The top 10 list, which is the same as the previous Australian Taxation Office (ATO) rankings excepts for some fluctuation in terms of pay, was produced from data extracted from the tax returns of millions of Aussies in the 2022-23 income year. The ATO has also used the information to reveal Australia's richest postcodes. The Sydney suburbs in 2027 (Darling Point, Edgecliff, HMAS Rushcutters and Point Piper) topped this list, with its 5841 earners raking in an average of $279,712. According to the median price of a house in Point Piper is over $4 million, with one mansion reportedly selling for a yearly-record $55 million in recent weeks. Australia's average taxable income for 2022-23 was $74,240, when more than 16 million Australians lodged tax returns. , with 10.3 million Australians claiming a total of $28.3 billion — $2739 per person. The total revenue collected by the ATO in 2022-23 was $577.4 billion, with more than half (51.6 per cent) coming from individuals. About a quarter (24.2 per cent) came from company tax and 14.2 per cent was sourced from GST.
