Three Simcoe County beaches under swimming advisories for high E. coli levels

Moose Beach has a swim advisory in place in this file image. (CTV NEWS/BARRIE) Three Simcoe County beaches are under swimming advisories issued by the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit (SMDHU) due to high bacterial levels. According to the SMDHU, Mackenzie Park Beach and Waubaushene Beach in Tay Township and Wasahago Centennial Park Beach in Severn Township have been flagged. While the beaches are not officially closed, warnings are in place for swimmers. The SMDHU states that high bacteria in lakes may cause minor facial infections or stomach illness. Those who swim while advisories are in place are urged to avoid dunking their heads in the water. The health unit lifted swimming advisories on Friday that were previously in place for Couchiching Beach and Moose Beach in Orillia.

$50,000 reward offered in unsolved Tay Township murder case

A $50,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible for the fatal shooting of Jonus Keegan Palmer in Tay Township four years ago. Officers with the Southern Georgian Bay OPP ruled Palmer's death a homicide after the 24-year-old was found with a fatal gunshot wound on July 5, 2021, outside a house where he was staying with friends on Old Fort Road in Tay Township. Police said several people were at the residence that night. Officers did make an arrest at the scene, but said it was unrelated to the shooting. At the time, investigators said they had reason to believe Palmer's death wasn't a random act. Woman charged following livestock fraud investigation in Tay Township

A fraud investigation in Tay Township resulted in livestock-related fraud charges for one North York woman. Back in February, provincial police initiated a fraud investigation after a complaint involving transportation and financial irregularities. Police allege that livestock was being transported from a farm in Tay Township and then sold at a Cookstown stockyard sale in September 2024. A suspect who was known to police was identified and a warrant for her arrest was issued. The warrant was acted upon by Toronto police after an interaction on June 27. As a result, the 28-year-old of North York was arrested and charged with obtaining by false pretence, fraud over $5,000, theft over $5,000 and making a forged document. The accused woman has been released and will appear before the courts at a later date. OPP Investigators ask that anyone having knowledge of this or similar investigations to contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
