Burglars break into actress's unguarded Maval farmhouse
Pune: Thieves broke into Bollywood actress Sangeeta Bijlani 's farmhouse near Pavana dam in Maval, about 60km from the city, and decamped with a TV set and Rs 50,000 in cash. The burglary came to light on Friday when Bijlani visited the farmhouse with her staff and found the window grilles broken. Senior inspector Dinesh Tayade of the Lonavla Rural police, told TOI, "Bijlani had not visited the farmhouse since March, and its isolated location near Pavana dam made it vulnerable. With no security guard on site, authorities suspect the thieves may have cased the property before breaking in over the past two days." In her complaint, Bijlani stated the the thieves made off with Rs 50,000 in cash meant for her father's emergency needs, which was kept in a cupboard. "Upon visiting the farmhouse on around 11.30am on Friday with her staff, Bijlani was shocked to see the main entrance forcibly broken. Further inspection revealed damage to household items, including the fridge and decor," Tayade said, citing the complaint. "The robbers damaged some of the cameras, but the DVR is intact. Footage recorded before the cameras were damaged is still available. Our team is reviewing this footage to establish further connections in the case," Tayade said. Bijlani's personal assistant Mujeeb Khan said the actor owned five acres of land and the bungalow, comprising more than six rooms and servant quarters, on 5,000sqft. "The burglars vandalized six CCTV cameras and used sharp weapons to cut sofa set, furniture and pillows to find out if valuables were concealed inside. The burglars also damaged electronic gadgets and fled," he said. "Police told us that the burglary was well-planned because the bungalow had remained close for a long time. The actress's father, who often visited the bungalow, did not visit it owing to his ill-health," he added.

India's victorious rapid chess team spring a surprise, Atharvaa Tayade, a ‘recreational' player from IIM-Calcutta
It was just another day for Atharvaa Tayade, a 24-year-old pursuing an MBA degree at IIM-Calcutta, when a message popped up on his account in March: 'We are participating as Team MGD1, would you be interested to play?' The message was from N Srinath, the gold medal-winning captain of India's Budapest Olympiad team, seeking a 'recreational player' for the only team from India at the FIDE World Rapid and Blitz Team Championships. The championship requires six players per team, with one compulsory spot each for a woman and a recreational player (someone who has never achieved FIDE Classical, Rapid or Blitz Rating of 2000 Elo points). Tayade was a perfect fit: a skilled player who stepped away from chess to pursue academics, his peak rating frozen at 1926 since July 2015 when he left the sport. Last week, when Team MGD1, which had the most number of Indians, won the FIDE World Rapid Team Championship in London, the focus was on Tayade, not on star players like Arjun Erigaisi, Harikrishna Pentala or Pranav V. Tayade remained unbeaten until the final round, carrying his team until the defeat by Malcolm's Mates' Murat Omarov. By then, his 11 wins in 12 rounds had already secured a win for his team. This meant the Pune-based chess management firm, Team MGD1, became the first Indian team to win the event in the tournament's brief three-year history. 'I knew that I was strong but I did not expect to perform this well. Luck was a factor; there were multiple things that had to fall into place, but I am happy that it went well eventually,' said Tayade, an IIT-Bombay graduate. Tayade said he was preparing for his summer internship when Srinath messaged him. 'I was quite surprised, but I responded by stating a bit about myself and said I could participate. That's when we exchanged numbers, spoke on WhatsApp and Srinath told me a couple of days later that they were finalising me,' he recalled. Ahead of his first major event in years – his first at the world level — Tayade said he made no preparations. His internship – part of the MBA course — took precedence. He spent two months – April and May — at Standard Chartered's Mumbai office. In between, he played just one local tournament as suggested by Srinath, to re-adjust to over-the-board play, relying solely on his online games. How Tayade dominated the field is intriguing. 'When I restarted chess during my engineering days, I came close to my original strength. Slowly, I was able to increase my rating online, and that's when I hit a peak of 2800, which is probably why Srinath noticed me,' he recalled. He proceeded to beat players like Wadim Rosenstein — architect of WR Chess Team and the recreational board concept — and nine-year-old compatriot Sarbartho Mani, among other rising talents. With an 11.0/12 Rapid score and 4.0/4 in Blitz, Tayade, who is originally from Mumbai, earned the moniker 'India's Pang Bo'. China's Pang Bo hogged the limelight in 2024 with his unbeaten run for the all-Chinese team, Decade China, in the amateur board. Earlier, while his contemporaries like Mitrabha Guha, Harshit Raja and Abhimanyu Puranik became grandmasters, Tayade opted for academics. After scoring over 98 per cent in Class 10 and over 90 per cent in Class 12, he cracked JEE Advanced to enter IIT-Bombay. 'My parents were involved in helping me transition into academics, whereas my trainers were keen on me continuing chess. But ultimately, it came down to me weighing the pros and cons of making chess a career,' he said. During the 2012 Under-11 Nationals, Tayade was pitted against his future MGD1 teammate Arjun Erigaisi — then just nine years old — and defeated him with the White pieces. 'Arjun was younger but playing in a higher age category, and I beat him. I shared this with Srinath, who immediately posted the result screenshot in our group. It became a funny icebreaker between us,' he recalled. Years later, Tayade found himself in awe of the same Arjun. 'Seeing Arjun and Hari in the room overawed me… they're the stars of Indian chess. I hesitated to share my chess ideas, wondering how they'd perceive them,' he said. 'But the opposite happened. During my games, they paid attention, gave inputs, and were very chill. My inferiority complex vanished once I started playing.' While the win made Tayade an overnight celebrity at his institute, he is still unsure about chess as a career option.

Shiv Sena UBT exodus continues, BJP gains two more corporators
Mumbai: The mass exodus of Shiv Sena (UBT) corporators continued on Sunday as Ishwar Tayade and Akanksha Shetye, along with more than 100 of their supporters and office bearers, joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). So far, over 50 Shiv Sena (UBT) leaders, who were corporators from 2017-2022 have migrated to the BJP, a party that is vying for control of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) in the upcoming elections. 'This is just the first act of the larger political shift—the second, third, and final act will soon follow,' Shelar said (Praful Gangurde/HT Photo) (HT PHOTO) Mumbai BJP chief Ashish Shelar said that Tayade and Shetye were attracted to the leadership of prime minister Narendra Modi and chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, and wanted to align themselves with the ideology and principles of the BJP. 'This is just the first act of the larger political shift—the second, third, and final act will soon follow,' Shelar said, calling the move ' a rejection of the Shiv Sena (UBT)'s leadership'. Shelar said, 'The state of Shiv Sena (UBT) is dangerous and dilapidated,' adding that the party's crisis was fuelled by their opposition to 'Mumbai, Mumbaikars, Hindutva, and Hindu festivals'. He claimed that the exodus of party corporators further pointed to the Shiv Sena (UBT)'s 'dilapidated condition'. In the 2017 BMC elections, the undivided Shiv Sena had won a majority of 84 seats, with the BJP close behind at 82. At present, according to Shelar, 50 of the original Shiv Sena corporators stand with the BJP, making it the 'number one party' and 'pushing the UBT faction into complete disarray'. Tayade and Shetye's move to the BJP comes four days after Ajit Bhandari and Vijayendra Shinde, also former corporators of the Shiv Sena (UBT), joined the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena.

Dumper runs over woman on her birthday in Baner
Pune: A clinical research associate (27) was run over by a dumper running alongside her scooter after she lost balance and fell on the road at Baner around 12.30am on Thursday. The deceased has been identified as Tejal Tayade, a resident of Talasari in Thane district. It was the victim's birthday on Thursday. She was riding with her friend, who also sustained injuries in the accident. The victim had come to Pune to attend to some work and was residing with her friend at Dange Chowk since June 16. Her friend, who is a software engineer, sustained injuries on her left hand, forehead and chin. She filed a complaint against the dumper driver with the Baner police. Assistant inspector Babasaheb Zarekar of the Baner police said, "We arrested the dumper driver on the charge of causing death by negligence." The officer said the complainant has been staying as a paying guest in Thergaon for the past few months for her company's work. "According to the complainant, the victim Tayade was her old friend. Tayade was working at a Mumbai-based research company as a clinical research associate. On June 16, Tayade came to Pune for her office work and was staying with the complainant," the officer said. He said late Wednesday evening, Tayade, the complainant and their two friends went to a restaurant at Balewadi to celebrate Tayade's birthday. "They cut the cake at 12am on Thursday and headed for Thergaon around 12.30am. Tayade was driving the complainant's scooter as the latter rode pillion," he said. Zarekar said when they reached Ganesh Datta Temple Chowk in Baner, a dumper was overtaking their scooter. "The complainant told us that when the dumper reached near their scooter, Tayade lost her balance and both of them fell off. Tayade came under the rear wheels of the dumper and got stuck under it. The complainant had a narrow escape in the accident," Zarekar said. He said the dumper driver left the vehicle at the spot and fled. "Their friends and some locals took Tayade to a nearby private hospital. The complainant went to the hospital with a friend. Tayade succumbed to the injuries during the treatment," he said. "The road where the accident happened is uneven. The complainant, however, did not know how her friend lost balance all of a sudden. Our investigations are on," Zarekar said.
