Tigers can help make Taylan May better person: Marshall

Benji Marshall says Wests Tigers want to help Taylan May become a better person as the troubled centre prepares for his NRL comeback. After impressing in NSW Cup games on a train-and-trial deal, May will run out against Gold Coast on Sunday for his first game since round 10 last year. The game at Leichhardt Oval comes a little more than a year after Penrith released the 23-year-old in the wake of several off-field indiscretions. May had domestic violence charges against him dropped in March, after his wife who had accused him of punching did not show up in court. Tigers coach Marshall incorrectly said on Saturday that May had been found not guilty in court. May had pleaded not guilty to the charges and has since spent time in a mental health facility undergoing treatment. Marshall felt the Tigers had an opportunity to help May get his life, not just his footballing career, back on track. After a Hatrick of tries last week in @NSWCup for @westsmagpies Taylan May will make his debut for @WestsTigers this week along side his brother vs @GCTitans 🏉 — Western Suburbs Magpies (@westsmagpies) July 16, 2025 "This is not just a story about what's best footy-wise, this is also helping a person become a better person," he said. "There's a lot of things that Taylan's committed to off the field to help turn his life around. Part of that helps you on the field. "Everyone has their struggles in life, everyone has their dramas away from footy, but we treat everyone as people and then athletes second. We're happy to have him in the team." Marshall has been impressed by May's work ethic since he joined forces with brother and prop forward Terrell at the Tigers. "It probably runs in their family, they love training hard, they don't really have many days off those guys," Marshall said. "We're excited to see him go around but it's his first game back from a long lay-off so we're not expecting miracles." A loss on Sunday would be another blow to the last-placed Titans' hopes of avoiding the wooden spoon. Coach Des Hasler is under mounting pressure as speculation increases that he won't be on board in 2026 for the final year of his contract. Hasler has called such reports "unfounded" and forward Beau Fermor said the coach should not take the blame for the side's failures. "It's probably not showing on the field, but Des isn't the one that's out there missing tackles, dropping balls and all of those things that are letting us down on the weekend," Fermor said. "He puts in more effort than anyone else at this club. I don't think it's Des' fault that we're sitting where we are, it's us as a playing group and we need to stick together and work our way out of it."

Bombshell career news for troubled footy star who checked himself into a mental health facility after beating domestic violence allegations

Wests Tigers CEO Shane Richardson believes Taylan May 'deserves a second chance' in the NRL, after signing the outside back on a train-and-trial deal. The Tigers on Tuesday formally won the race for May's signature, with the Samoan international agreeing to a deal for the rest of this season. The contract is May's first since he was released from Penrith last season, after the Panthers attempted to rip up his contract following a number of off-field indiscretions. The 23-year-old also had domestic violence charges against him dropped in March, after his wife who had accused him of punching did not show up in court. May had pleaded not guilty to the charges and has since spent time in a mental health facility undergoing treatment. The former Panther will not be able to immediately return to the field, with the NRL only conditionally approving his comeback. In a statement on Tuesday, the Tigers said training and off-field standards needed to be met before May could play again. 'Taylan, like all our players, will be joining a club which has a culture of putting healthy relationships first,' CEO Shane Richardson said. 'Taylan has made enormous strides since we first met with him 10 weeks ago through voluntarily attending education and counselling sessions. 'All players deserve a second chance and we think this is the environment which gives him the best chance of success both on and off the field.' May's move to the Tigers came after he had met with South Sydney coach Wayne Bennett and toured the club's Heffron Park facilities. But the Tigers signing will allow him to play alongside his brother Terrell, with the duo and older brother Tyrone May all keen to one day play together. 'Clearly, Taylan is a quality player who will further strengthen our squad in the back end of the competition,' Richardson said. 'But we also believe his best chance of success on and off the field is if he is around family and friends. 'He will now have the chance to not only return to a team environment but also to play alongside his brother Terrell – which is important to him.'

Former Penrith young gun Taylan May has been signed by Wests Tigers after domestic violence charges were dropped

Wests Tigers CEO Shane Richardson says 'all players deserve a second chance' after the club officially gave former Penrith flyer Taylan May an NRL lifeline and reunited him with his brother Terrell. Taylan has been in NRL limbo since he was axed by the Panthers last year after being charged over domestic violence allegations and he was subject to the league's stand down policy. He pleaded not guilty and those charges were withdrawn three months ago leaving May, 22, to eye off an NRL return while also recently undergoing treatment in a mental health facility. The Tigers resumed talks once he checked out and South Sydney coach Wayne Bennett had also shown interest in May, which included a tour of the club's headquarters. But May has signed a train-and-trial contract for the rest of the 2025 season, and could yet take the park with his brother. He has been approved to commence training immediately and his paying return would be guided by meeting of training and off-field standards. 'Clearly, Taylan is a quality player who will further strengthen our squad in the back end of the competition,' Wests Tigers CEO Shane Richardson said. 'But we also believe his best chance of success on and off the field is if he is around family and friends. 'He will now have the chance to not only return to a team environment but also to play alongside his brother Terrell – which is important to him.' 'Taylan has made enormous strides since we first met with him 10 weeks ago through voluntarily attending education and counselling sessions. 'All players deserve a second chance and we think this is the environment which gives him the best chance of success both on and off the field.' Richardson said May's contract would be reviewed at the end of the year.

Troubled footy player set to be handed career lifeline after domestic violence charges against him were withdrawn

Taylan May is reportedly on the cusp of being offered a deal to join up with a new NRL club and could return to play over the next month. The 23-year-old former Penrith Panthers player is, according to The Sydney Morning Herald, could resurrect his NRL career with the Wests Tigers. The move would see him join up with his older brother Terrell May. May was indefinitely stood down by Penrith under the NRL's no-fault stand-down policy in May of last year, with the club later announcing that he'd be leaving the side by mutual agreement. His exit came after he had faced serious accusations relating to an incident in April 2024 at a home in Werrington, with May being charged with domestic violence offences. He later pleaded not guilty to charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, two counts of stalking or intimidation intending to cause fear of harm and two counts of contravening an AVO. The charges were later withdrawn. Peter V'landys later confirmed that May could return to play following the dismissal of the charges but the former Penrith player, who made his debut in 2021, delayed any such comeback. The winger had checked into a mental health clinic earlier this year to focus on his well-being. In May, he broke his silence on admitting himself to the facility to Channel 9, stating that he felt like he was 'a whole different person now.' He also added that he could play as early as 'next week', dismissing claims that he would not be a risk to other clubs in the NRL. Now, The Sydney Morning Herald writes that the winger 'underwent a medical exam' at the Tigers on monday. The rugby league player is also understood to have snubbed a train-and-trial offer from the Rabbitohs having visited the club two weeks ago. However, the outlet adds that sources close to the deal say the footy player was drawn to the prospect of playing alongside his older brother Terrell at the Tigers. It comes as Sam Burgess had also reportedly attempted to coax May to join Super League club Warrington. But the former Penrith player has made it clear that he is set on staying in Australia so that he can play alongside his brother. 'I'll just put it out there, I honestly wanna play with my brother,' he recently told Channel 9. 'He has spoken about that in the media and it will be a dream come true, not just for us but for my family. Playing with him would light a bigger fire inside me.'
