Major Update in New York Knicks' Head Coaching Search Emerges

Major Update in New York Knicks' Head Coaching Search Emerges originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New York Knicks have to be pretty used to rejection by now. The team has attempted to contact several NBA teams to interview their coaches and have been rejected time and time again. Advertisement The Knicks requested to interview four active NBA head coaches: Jason Kidd, Chris Finch, Ime Udoka, and Quin Snyder. The Dallas Mavericks, Minnesota Timberwolves, Houston Rockets, and Atlanta Hawks all told New York to kick rocks. After all of those interview requests were rejected, the Knicks have started to fixate on names that do not require the approval of another team. Two coaches, in particular, have been linked to New York recently. Edwards III of The Athletic, Taylor Jenkins and Mike Brown will both be interviewing for the Knicks' head coaching vacancy next week. They are considered the 'leading candidates.' Advertisement These should be two coaches that NBA fans are largely familiar with. The former of the two will be the one more fresh in everyone's minds. Jenkins was unexpectedly fired by the Memphis Grizzlies before the conclusions of their 2024-25 NBA season. The Grizzlies opted to give the reins to Tuomas Iisalo instead, who went from the interim coach to the full-time replacement. Jenkins has a 250-214 coaching record in the regular season during his team as the lead bench boss. The former Grizzlies coach enjoyed two 50-win seasons and three trips to the postseason with Memphis. The Grizzlies never quite delivered playoff success during Jenkins' time in Memphis. The Knicks coaching candidate has a 9-14 record in the postseason. Advertisement Brown is notable for his head coaching stints with the Cleveland Cavaliers, Los Angeles Lakers, and Sacramento Kings. He was also fired in the 2024-25 NBA season, putting an end to his time in Sacramento. Both names here bring familiarity. However, it is easily debatable if either represents a significant upgrade over recently-fired Tom Thibodeau. Knicks' coaching search continues: Minnesota assistant Micah Nori interviewed, considering James Borrego

On the eve of the 2025 NBA Draft, the New York Knicks continue their search to find their next head coach (they don't have a pick before No. 50, there's no pressure there). The Knicks have already conducted interviews with former Grizzlies head coach Taylor Jenkins and former Cavaliers/Lakers/Kings head coach Mike Brown, and both were 'impressive,' reports James Edwards III at The Athletic. Those are names we knew were in the mix, but then Edwards adds they are considering bringing in a new name, former Hornets head coach James Borrego. 'New York has tossed around the idea of speaking with James Borrego for its vacancy, per league sources. Borrego, a CAA client, is known around the league for his offensive creativity and analytics-forward approach.' The Knicks have already interviewed Minnesota lead assistant Micah Nori, reports Shams Charania of ESPN. The New York Knicks are interviewing Minnesota Timberwolves assistant Micah Nori for the team's head coaching job, sources tell ESPN. Now three candidates – Nori and two former head coaches Mike Brown and Taylor Jenkins – have done formal interviews for the Knicks' vacancy. Nori has been near the top of the list of assistant coaches deserving a shot in the big chair and is well-liked by the players he has coached. He has been a key part of a Minnesota staff that has led the Timberwolves to back-to-back Western Conference Finals. However, the Knicks have been looking for an experienced head coach after firing Tom Thibodeau, rather than replacing him with a first-time coach. Borrego has experience as a head coach, and his teams in Charlotte improved every year — he led them to 43 wins in his final season — despite the roster not exactly being stacked with elite NBA talent. That wasn't enough for the Hornets, who let him go. Last season he was an assistant on Willie Green's staff in New Orleans. The Knicks have taken their time and done a broad search to replace Thibodeau, who in five years as the Knicks head coach established a culture, led the team to the playoff four times (as many times as they had been there the previous 20 seasons combined), and last season led New York to its first Eastern Conference Finals in a quarter century. The sense was that Thibodeau had taken this team as far as he could, and a new voice was needed to take Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, and the rest of the crew one final step: to the NBA Finals. The door feels open in the Eastern Conference next season (considering the Achilles injuries to Jayson Tatum in Boston, Tyrese Haliburton in Indiana, and Damian Lillard in Milwaukee). Still, that's a big ask for the next Knicks coach, which is why the team has leaned into veteran coaches. There is no timeline for the hire, but Leon Rose and the Knicks front office would want a coach's input on free agency, which starts in a week.

Report: Knicks interview Wolves assistant Micah Nori

June 24 - Minnesota Timberwolves assistant Micah Nori is the third candidate to formally interview for the New York Knicks' vacant head coaching position, ESPN reported Tuesday. Former NBA head coaches Mike Brown and Taylor Jenkins previously met with the team about replacing fired head coach Tom Thibodeau, dismissed earlier this month after the Knicks' first Eastern Conference finals appearance in a quarter-century. Nori, 51, has been on Chris Finch's staff in Minnesota since 2021. The Timberwolves denied the Knicks' request for an interview with Finch. Nori previously worked as an assistant with the Detroit Pistons (2018-21), Denver Nuggets (2015-18), Sacramento Kings (2013-15) and Toronto Raptors (2009-13). Brown, 55, was fired 31 games into his third season as the head coach in Sacramento, where he posted a 107-88 overall record. The two-time NBA Coach of the Year also led the Cleveland Cavaliers (2005-10, 2013-14) and Los Angeles Lakers (2011-12) and has a career record of 454-304 in the regular season. The Memphis Grizzlies fired Jenkins, 40, in March with nine games left in the regular season and a 44-29 record. He compiled a 250-214 record in nearly six full seasons with the Grizzlies. They qualified for the playoffs three times. --Field Level Media

Knicks have third head coach candidate as Micah Nori interviews for job

A third interview candidate has emerged for the Knicks' coaching opening. Minnesota assistant coach Micah Nori became the third person to discuss the vacancy with the Knicks earlier this week, joining former head coaches Taylor Jenkins and Mike Brown, a league source confirmed to The Post. ESPN first reported the Knicks' interest in the 51-year-old Nori, who had been with the Timberwolves since 2021. Advertisement The Knicks are interviewing Micah Nori for their head coaching opening. Knicks head coach search: Could a new name enter the conversation?

The NBA Draft and free agency will take place within the next week, and the New York Knicks are still going through the process of finding a new head coach. When New York fired Tom Thibodeau close to three weeks ago, the franchise set out to do an extensive search for his replacement. The Knicks have the NBA's only head coaching vacancy with no competition in the market. Advertisement The process reached a new stage last week, when New York held interviews with former Memphis Grizzlies head coach Taylor Jenkins and former Sacramento Kings head coach Mike Brown. Both candidates interviewed over multiple days and were impressive, per league sources. The 40-year-old Jenkins was fired by the Grizzlies just before the start of the playoffs after, essentially, six full seasons manning the sideline and posting a 250-214 record. Brown was fired by the Kings early in the regular season. Aside from his time in Sacramento, he's been a head coach for both the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Los Angeles Lakers. He was also an assistant on Steve Kerr's Golden State Warriors staff. Jenkins and Brown appear to be the front-runners as of now. However, New York has tossed around the idea of speaking with James Borrego for its vacancy, per league sources. Borrego, a CAA client, is known around the league for his offensive creativity and analytics-forward approach. Borrego spent last season as an assistant coach on Willie Green's staff in New Orleans and was last a head coach for the Charlotte Hornets from 2018-22. His record in those four seasons doesn't pop off the screen, but Borrego led the struggling franchise to a 43-win season just before he was let go. Charlotte has won 40-plus games during the regular season just four times since 2005, which includes Borrego's final year in charge. Something else to continue to monitor is the Knicks' interest in Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd. While a long shot to join New York, Kidd — who is under contract for two more years and the Mavericks, per league sources, have shown no interest to this point in allowing their coach to leave — still hasn't agreed to an extension like other currently-employed head coaches who the Knicks showed interest in during the first stage of their search. New York reached out to Houston to speak with Ime Udoka and to Chicago to speak with Billy Donovan. Udoka agreed to an extension with the Rockets last week, league sources told The Athletic. And according to multiple reports, the Bulls and Billy Donovan are in the process of working on a contract extension. Advertisement There has been nothing regarding Kidd and an extension in Dallas to this point. Furthermore, Dallas did not extend the contracts of Kidd's assistant coaches after the franchise made it to the Western Conference finals last year. Kidd is going to lose his longtime assistant Sean Sweeney to the San Antonio Spurs, league sources confirm to The Athletic. Other top Mavericks assistants, Jared Dudley and God Shammgod, have received interest from rival ballclubs, per league sources, and have contracts that expire on June 30, which is also when Sweeney's deal is up. These all factor into why the Knicks-Kidd chatter won't fully go away. While it's not ideal, the Knicks don't necessarily need a head coach by Wednesday's NBA Draft. New York holds the No. 50 pick. Having a head coach in place by the start of free-agency negotiations next week would be beneficial for the Knicks. However, until further notice, not having one signals that the franchise could be keeping the core of its roster intact. With all that said, New York can continue to search for a Thibodeau replacement at its own pace. — Fred Katz contributed to this story. (Photo of James Borrego: Sean Gardner / Getty Images)
