Driver issues? Rory McIlroy blasts 392-yard tee shot at 2025 U.S. Open in first round
Driver issues? Rory McIlroy blasts 392-yard tee shot at 2025 U.S. Open in first round Show Caption Hide Caption Rory McIlroy on motivation after Masters win Rory McIlroy admits he didn't expect how hard it would be to find motivation after his Masters triumph. USGA During his pre-tournament news conference, Rory McIlroy was a bit combative when discussing his driver, which has caused him some issues since the 2025 PGA Championship. He missed the cut at the RBC Canadian Open last week with a new driver in the bag than what he used when he won the Masters two months ago. Tuesday, McIlroy confirmed he moved on from the TaylorMade Qi35 that let him down and went back into the Qi10 model. 'Every driver sort of has its own character and you're trying to manage the misses,' he said during his Tuesday press conference. 'I'm in a better place with everything going into this week.' Would his driver issues continue at the 2025 U.S. Open at Oakmont, where accuracy off the tee is essential to success? Early on, it didn't seem like it. Coming off a birdie at the par-4 11th hole, McIlroy stepped to the tee of the par-5 12th and blasted his tee shot down the left side of the fairway before it took a huge bounce and continued careening down the tilted fairway. The ball finally stopped 392 yards from the tee box, his longest drive of the season. McIlroy then found the green in two shots and two-putted for birdie, moving to 2 under early in his round. He has finished in the top 10 at six consecutive U.S. Opens, and even coming in while struggling a bit, McIlroy is off to a brilliant start Thursday.

Rory McIlroy makes key change to his bag ahead of US Open after failed PGA test
The Grand Slam superstar has a new driver in the bag ahead of next week's US Open Superstar Rory McIlroy has made a major driver change just weeks after his non-conforming drama at the PGA Championship. The Northern Irish star admitted he was 'p****d off' after news leaked that his main weapon had failed a routine test at Quail Hollow. McIlroy had to change just prior to the event and didn't show his usual sparkle off the tees as he toiled down the field behind winner Scottie Scheffler. The career Grand Slam star is now back into competition mode at the RBC Canadian Open after being absent since the PGA with a new and different driver in the bag. McIlroy started out at TPC Toronto with a TaylorMade Qi35 driver and had reasonable success with nine out of 14 fairways hit on day one, despite a frustrating opening effort of one-over par. The work will continue ahead of next week's US Open at Oakmont as the five-times Major winner aims to make it half a dozen in Pennsylvania and made up for last year's heartbreaking loss on the final green to Bryson DeChambeau at Pinehurst. McIlroy reflected on using the new tool on day one in Canada as he said: 'It's hard with the driver. With the one I had been playing with previously, my miss with it was a little bit left. "And then my miss with this one is a little bit right, so it's just trying to figure out that and manage it a little bit. 'But a nice feeling to be able to aim up the middle of the fairway and fully release it and know it's not going to go left on you.' McIlroy starts out on day two with a job to make the weekend's play as he currently sits 10 shots behind leaders Thorbjorn Olesen and Cristobal Del Solar and fighting to make the cut with a current position of tied-199th on the standings. With eye on U.S. Open, Rory McIlroy (71) using new driver in Canada
Rory McIlroy's driver issue last month at the PGA Championship led to a significant equipment change ahead of the year's third major. Prior to this week's RBC Canadian Open, and after head-to-head at-home testing, McIlroy has decided to reinsert the TaylorMade Qi35 driver that he briefly experimented with during the Florida swing. He has also reportedly shortened his driver about an inch, to prioritize accuracy. 'It was my first outing with a new driver, and I felt like that went pretty well,' said McIlroy, who hit nine of 14 fairways en route to an opening-round, 1-over 71 at TPC Toronto. 'I hit some drives that I liked and that I liked to see, so that was encouraging.' McIlroy's driver has been a point of conversation over the past month, after his previous model was deemed nonconforming during routine driver testing ahead of the PGA. Even with an identical backup head, he didn't perform at his usual level off the tee, ultimately finishing in a tie for 47th in his first major round since completing the career Grand Slam. McIlroy's change with his biggest weapon comes at a crucial time in the competitive calendar, with two majors, the FedExCup playoffs and Ryder Cup all to play over the next three months. 'It's hard with the driver – the one I had been playing with previously, when I missed it, I was a little bit left,' McIlroy said. 'Then my miss with this one is a little bit right. It's just trying to figure that out and manage it a little bit. 'It's a nice feeling to get up the middle of the fairway and fully release it and know it's not going to go left on you.' McIlroy briefly went to the newer model at the Arnold Palmer Invitational but returned to his older head for the final round. He went on to win the following week at The Players.
