One dead, 4 injured as Tazia touches high-voltage wire during Muharram procession in Jharkhand
At least one person died and four others were injured after a Tazia came into contact with an 11,000-volt overhead electric wire during a Muharram procession in Jharkhand's Giridih district on Sunday, officials said. The incident occurred in Chakosingha village under the Thodthambha outpost area. According to officials, as participants lifted a large Tazia on their shoulders as part of the traditional procession, it accidentally touched the high-tension wire, triggering a massive electric shock. Witnesses said five to six people collapsed immediately, writhing in pain after the shock. One of them died on the spot. The condition of two of the injured is said to be critical. All the injured have been admitted to the Giridih District Hospital for treatment. Confirming the incident Giridih Deputy Commissioner Ramniwas Yadav said that the administration responded promptly, providing immediate assistance and medical care. The tragedy led to panic and chaos in the procession, with the mood of mourning gripping the entire village. This is not the first such incident in the district. In 2023, a similar accident during Muharram in Chakmanjo village under Jamua police station limits claimed the life of a youth and left two others injured. That same year, in a separate incident in Petarwar, Bokaro district, four people were electrocuted and over 10 others sustained severe burns after a Tazia touched a high-voltage line. In view of recurring accidents, the Jharkhand State Electricity Supply Corporation (JSEB), following a directive from the High Court, issued clear guidelines last week regarding the permissible height of flags, Tazias, and tableaux in religious processions. However, despite the advisory, several processions across the state continue to flout the rules by carrying Tazias of excessive height.

On Muharram, Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge call for fighting injustice
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday led party leaders in urging people to follow the example of Hazrat Imam Hussain's sacrifice and promote unity and religious brotherhood through struggle and dedication. "On this day of Muharram, we should resolve to follow the path shown by Hazrat Imam Hussain, which, through struggle, sacrifice, and dedication, leads us toward humanity, peace, and unity," said the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge also gave a message for a fearless fight against injustice. "On the solemn occasion of Ashura, the tenth day of Muharram, we pay our tribute to Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS). His exemplary life, teachings, righteousness, fearless fight against injustice, and supreme sacrifice resonate through every era, continuing to inspire generations," he wrote on X. On Sunday, Muharram processions were taken out across the country, including the Sambhal district of Uttar Pradesh which witnessed tension last November over a court-ordered ASI survey of the Shahi Jama Masjid. The district administration had stepped up security to ensure peaceful observance of the event, said an official. A major highlight of this year's preparations was the enhanced surveillance apparatus. As part of the 'Sambhal Ke Naam' initiative, over 12,000 NPR (Number Plate Recognition) and citizen-installed CCTV cameras were deployed across the district. This was instrumental in the real-time monitoring of the processions. Additionally, drone cameras were used to keep aerial surveillance over the entire route. Superintendent of Police Krishan Kumar Bishnoi said on the eve of the processions that a total of 342 Tazias were expected to be taken out across various parts of the district. Peace committee meetings were held in all areas in advance, and coordination was established with Tazia organisers, he said. Each Tazia Dar submitted a list of designated volunteers, for whom the police have issued unique identity cards. The move was aimed at helping law enforcement agencies quickly identify and assist them in case of any emergencies. The SP clarified that the height of each Tazia has been restricted to a maximum of 12 feet. In previous years, oversized Tazias often required the temporary dismantling or cutting of electricity wires, leading to disruptions and financial losses of approximately Rs 35-40 lakh. However, this year, no such adjustments were needed, as all processions were adhering to the prescribed height and route guidelines, the police said.

Watch out for route diversions during Tazia procession
Indore: In view of the Muharram procession scheduled for Sunday, the city traffic police have issued a diversion plan to ensure smooth vehicular movement and public safety. The procession will begin at 2pm from Imambada and proceed through Subhash Chowk, Rajwada, Yeshwant Road, Macchi Bazaar, Pandrinath, Harsiddhi, Moti Tabela, and Collectorate Square before culminating at Karbala Maidan. DCP Arvind Tiwari said a heavy crowd presence is anticipated along the route and at Karbala Maidan, prompting authorities to implement traffic diversions for heavy, four-wheeler, and two-wheeler vehicles. As per the plan, heavy vehicles like trucks and transport carriers will not be allowed through central city routes and must instead travel via Transport Nagar, Choithram Mandi Square, Rajendra Nagar Bridge, and Narmada Nagar Square to access Ring Road. Public transport and other four-wheelers heading from Bhanwarkuan or Tower area towards Mhow Naka will be rerouted via Tower, Palsikar, Manikbagh Bridge, Rajiv Gandhi Square, and further through Rajendra Nagar, Utsav Hotel, Gopur, and Foothi Kothi. Likewise, heavy vehicles traveling from Gangwal or Mhow Naka towards Transport Nagar will need to take the Chandan Nagar, Foothi Kothi, and Rajiv Gandhi Square route. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it legal? Additionally, vehicles from Annapurna Road or Foothi Kothi going towards Yeshwant Road will be diverted through Mhow Naka, Gangwal Square, Bada Ganpati Square, and Subhash Marg. For vehicles traveling from Bhanwarkuan or Tower area to Mhow Naka, an alternative route via RTO Road and Kesarbagh railway crossing through Choithram has been suggested. Post 11am, city buses will not be permitted to operate on Rajwada and Jawahar Marg. Buses intending to approach Jawahar Marg must use Mrignayani and Subhash Marg for movement.
