Mandya Dist Jail inmates appear for literacy exam

Mandya: As part of the 'Change Through Learning' literacy programme, 40 inmates from Mandya District Jail appeared for a literacy examination held inside the prison on Sunday. The initiative, aimed at transforming lives through education, was overseen by ZP CEO KR Nandini. The participating inmates — 37 men and 3 women — were receiving basic literacy training for the past year. These prisoners, once illiterate, are now learning to read and write through regular classes conducted within the jail. Nandini stressed the need to build awareness among inmates about the power of education. She also emphasised the importance of providing skill development training, enabling prisoners to return to society with dignity and employable skills after their release. During her visit, she inspected facilities provided for women inmates, including barracks, workshops, library, drinking water, sanitation, and other essential amenities. One elderly inmate shared his journey with the CEO, saying, "At first, I wondered why I should hold a pen at my age, which should have been for my children or grandchildren, but teacher Shivalingaiah explained why learning is important. Now I can recognise letters and read a little." Many inmates expressed their gratitude and said they plan to request the education department to honour their teacher, Shivalingaiah, on Teacher's Day (September 5) for his dedicated work. Shivalingaiah, who leads the programme, has so far helped 126 inmates gain basic literacy. Despite facing initial scepticism from colleagues for teaching prisoners, he persisted, driven by the belief that everyone deserves a second chance. Jail superintendent TK Lokesh explained that inmates study two hours daily, following the 'Light for Life' curriculum that includes reading, writing, arithmetic, and general knowledge. Study materials are provided to aid their learning. Vocational training is also offered in mushroom farming, cooking, plumbing, and motor repairs, based on the inmates' interests. "Our library has over 18,000 books and subscribes to 13 daily newspapers, five weeklies, and monthly magazines. Facilities like tables, chairs, and fans ensure a comfortable reading environment," Lokesh added. The answer sheets from Sunday's exam will be evaluated by the block education office (South Zone), Mandya. Inmates who pass will receive 'neo-literate certificates' recognising their achievement.

Education Ministry outlines seven steps to reduce teachers' workload, says Fadhlina

PUTRAJAYA: The Education Ministry has outlined seven measures to alleviate the workload of teachers, including the abolition of low-impact events and the appointment of members of the public as examination invigilators. Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said that this long-standing issue has been a focus since the start of her tenure, requiring a comprehensive solution. "The ministru, through recommendations from the National Education Advisory Council (MPPK), has outlined seven steps to reduce teachers' workload. Key among these is the abolition of organising low-impact events and reducing the frequency of assessments related to the Malaysian Education Quality Standard (SKPM) management elements," she said in a Facebook post Thursday (July 10). Additionally, there will be more flexibility in the timing for recording student attendance, limiting Teacher's Day celebrations to national and school levels only, and condensing the Daily Lesson Plan (RPH) to include only objectives, teaching, and reflection elements. Fadhlina also mentioned that the ministry is strengthening teacher autonomy in planning and implementing the teaching and learning process (PdP) as well as Classroom Assessment (PBD). "This initiative has already shown significant successes, including the appointment of over 11,000 public examination invigilators from the public, thereby reducing teachers' workload. However, it needs to be continuously strengthened to ensure its impact is comprehensive and felt by all teachers," she added. Furthermore, she urged all state Education Departments, district Education Offices, and school administrators to ensure the effective implementation of these initiatives, with the Director-General of Education responsible for ensuring all initiatives proceed as planned. "Quarterly reports must be presented to me and the ministry's senior management, and I demand commitment from the entire educational leadership at all levels to address the issue of teachers' workload together," Fadhlina said. - Bernama

MOE rolls out key measures to ease teacher workload

PETALING JAYA: The Education Ministry, through its National Education Advisory Council, has introduced seven key measures to ease the burden on teachers — a move Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek (pic) says is crucial to resolving a long-standing issue that demands decisive and comprehensive action. In a Facebook post, today, Fadhlina said teachers' workload has been a priority since the start of her tenure, and the ministry remains committed to long-term reforms that address concerns voiced by educators nationwide. Among the steps outlined are limiting the organisation of low-impact school events, reducing the frequency of administrative reviews under the Malaysian Education Quality Standard, allowing flexible times for recording student attendance, and appointing non-teachers to invigilate public examinations. Other efforts include simplifying daily lesson plans to cover only objectives, teaching content and reflection; restricting Teacher's Day celebrations to the school and national levels; and enhancing teacher autonomy in delivering classroom lessons and assessments. 'These initiatives have already shown significant success, including the appointment of over 11,000 public examination invigilators from outside the teaching profession, which has helped ease the burden on teachers,' she said. However, she stressed that the implementation of these reforms must be strengthened to ensure their full impact is felt across the education system. She called on all state education departments, district education offices, and school administrators to ensure effective on-ground execution. 'The Director-General of Education has been tasked with overseeing the initiative, with quarterly progress reports to be submitted to her and the ministry's top management. 'I demand the full commitment of the entire education leadership at every level to ensure the issue of teacher workload is addressed together. 'The wellbeing of teachers is the heartbeat of our national education reform,' she added.

Temenggong Lau urges stronger support for teachers to tackle shortage in Chinese primary schools

Lau (centre) leads the cake-cutting ceremony to mark the celebration. SIBU (June 13): School Boards of Directors must actively seek support from the government and Chinese education organisations to provide more in-service training and incentives to retain teachers, said Temenggong Dato Vincent Lau Lee Ming. The Sibu Division Chinese Community Leaders Association president said that nurturing a stable and professional teaching workforce is key to addressing the longstanding shortage of qualified teachers in Chinese primary schools. 'Hopefully, this would help resolve the shortage of qualified teachers and the attrition of young educators, which has long troubled Chinese primary schools,' he said during the Teacher's Day celebration of SJK(C) Tung Hua today. Lau, who also chairs the school's Board of Directors, said another pressing challenge lies in the slow pace of updating teaching materials and resources in curriculum development. 'Teachers should not merely be implementers of textbooks, but should take the initiative to become curriculum adapters and content creators,' he said. He encouraged educators to jointly develop lesson plans and teaching tools tailored to students' needs by integrating teaching content with local culture and real-life contexts to make learning more engaging and practical. On the growing role of educational technology, Lau emphasised the importance of keeping pace with change, noting that Chinese primary schools must not be left behind. 'We should actively upgrade school networks and infrastructure, encourage teachers to enhance their digital literacy, and promote blended learning models to cultivate students' diverse capabilities,' he said. Lau also noted that Chinese-language education continues to face systemic challenges such as insufficient funding, land constraints, and bureaucratic hurdles. 'Addressing these issues requires persistent advocacy through school boards, parent-teacher associations, and the Chinese community. We must strive for fair treatment while strengthening communication and cooperation with mainstream society to showcase the contributions and value of Chinese education to national development,' he stressed. He added that with rising parental expectations for academic achievement and higher education, more attention must also be paid to students' mental health and character development. 'Teachers should serve as life mentors – not just educators, but guides for personal growth – fostering a caring, inclusive, and warm learning environment,' he said. Although these challenges are significant, Lau expressed confidence that with continuous professional growth of teachers, strong school leadership, and community support, the vision of meaningful education reform is within reach. 'Educational reform cannot rely on teachers alone. It requires the collective effort of the entire educational ecosystem. 'May we join hands and move forward steadily as SJK(C) Tung Hua undergoes its transformation, continuing to shine on the path of Chinese-language education and pave a broader road of learning for future generations,' he concluded.
