2,700 teachers recruited to fill vacancies in Tamil Nadu government schools

Nearly 2,700 teachers have been recruited through the Teachers Recruitment Board this year to fill vacancies in government schools across Tamil Nadu. Posting orders will be issued shortly, said B. Chandra Mohan, Principal Secretary to Government, School Education Department, on Saturday. Addressing the media, he also highlighted the State government's continued investment in upgrading school infrastructure. Over the past four years, ₹4,000 crore has been spent under the Professor Anbazhagan School Infrastructure Development Scheme to replace dilapidated school buildings. For the current year, ₹1,000 crore will be allocated for schools in rural areas and ₹130 crore for those in urban areas. He was speaking after inaugurating four new classrooms at the Government Higher Secondary School in Arasampalayam, Coimbatore. The facility was constructed with Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) support from Sri Krishna Sweets. Mr. Chandra Mohan reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring uninterrupted education for all students. 'The government provides free textbooks, uniforms, footwear, breakfast, and noon meals to remove barriers to learning,' he said. Acknowledging the CSR support, he said private sector participation is crucial in strengthening public education.

Age concession for direct recruitment into T.N. government service to remain till September 2026

The State government has decided to allow the one-time concession in maximum age limit for various competitive exams for direct recruitment into government service till September next year. In view of the delay in conducting various exams due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the State government in September 2021 issued orders enhancing the maximum age limit for direct recruitment by two years. In a recent communication, Chief Secretary N. Muruganandam clarified that the decision was a 'one-time concession' and added that this would be applicable only to recruitment by various agencies and appointing authorities (made through notification) till September 12, 2026. Necessary amendments to the special rules/ad hoc rules be needed in this regard by the respective departments, Mr. Muruganandam added. The communication has been sent to all government departments, Collectors, the Madras High Court, the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission, the Teachers Recruitment Board, the Medical Services Recruitment Board, the Tamil Nadu Uniformed Services Recruitment Board, and the Tamil Nadu Forest Uniformed Services Recruitment Board, among others. In 2021, the then Minister for Finance and Human Resources Management had announced the one-time age concession in the Assembly. The Human Resources Management Department on September 13, 2021 issued orders for the same. However, it did not specify as to how long the concession would remain in effect. Meanwhile, some government departments raised doubts if the relaxation continued to be in place. The Chief Secretary's clarification was in response to these concerns. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin had announced that several thousand posts in the government service would be filled.

Candidates who cleared TET in 2013 plead for priority in appointment of govt. school teachers in the new academic year

A group of Tamil Nadu Teacher Eligibility Test (TNTET) qualified secondary grade teachers (SGT) on Thursday urged Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and Minister for School Education Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi to appoint them to the vacancies in the schools by the new academic year. At a press conference held here, representatives of the TET SGTs from various districts, who had cleared the exam since 2013, appealed to the authorities concerned to prioritise their appointment. 'On Labour Day, we appeal to the government to fill the elementary school posts lying vacant since 2013. At least 40% of the qualified candidates are in the 40-45 age group. We have passed the qualifying exams after studying two types of school syllabi. Despite this, we are unemployed. The Teachers Recruitment Board (TRB), when calling for certificate verification, overlooks us because of marks-based assessment criteria. We do not have the skills or the mindset to write yet another qualifying examination. Despite our educational qualification, we are forced to take up any available job to make ends meet,' said E.R. Tamilvalavan, coordinator of the group. The TRB announced 2,728 staff vacancies on July 21, 2024. There are 4,460 government schools with 5,804 vacancies in the State. 'In the 2023-24 academic year, over 1 lakh children were admitted to elementary schools. If the authorities want to improve school education, they must increase the number of posts and recruit more teachers. TET candidates like us could be considered on the basis of our seniority and subject knowledge,' said Hemalatha, a science teacher. The 2013 TET SGTs also urged the authorities to rescind the Government Order 149, which mandates an additional examination for teachers.
