Matildas coach Joe Montemurro set to make more changes to Australia's team for return clash with Panama

Former Liverpool goalkeeper Teagan Micah won't be risked in the Matildas' clash in Perth on Tuesday night against a Panama side hoping to secure back-to-back wins over an experimental Australian outfit. Despite sitting 41 places lower than Australia in the world rankings, Panama beat a Matildas team missing a host of stars – including Steph Catley, Alanna Kennedy, Caitlin Foord, Ellie Carpenter, Clare Hunt, Kyra Cooney-Cross, Charlotte Grant and injured pair Mary Fowler and Sam Kerr – 1-0 in Bunbury on Saturday. More young talent is set to get an opportunity in game two of the series at HBF Park, with Alex Chidiac, Kaitlyn Torpey and Emily Gielnik having since departed camp, and free agent Micah, who was forced off in the defeat after a crunching second-half blow left her dazed, ruled out. 'We're not going to take any risks,' Matildas coach Joe Montemurro said. 'She (Micah) will be fine. It's just a little bit of whiplash, (but) we just don't want to take any risks. There's no need to.' Montemurro is happy to further experiment with players and combinations in just his fourth game in charge as he bids to build Australia's depth ahead of next year's AFC Women's Asian Cup. 'It's been great to be able to do it at this level because we can gauge exactly where we're at,' he said. 'I haven't really looked at (Saturday's result) as a loss. I've looked at it as more information for us to go forward. 'We're trying to lift the way, lift the style, lift the football, and we want to do it without negative results, but it's probably one where … when you make a lot of changes there's going to be a little bit of instability, but I still have belief in the process and still have belief in the way going forward. 'We've got a bank of information that will help us go forward.' Montemurro suggested the learning experience that the next generation of Matildas were being exposed to was priceless. 'It's like everything – you don't lose, you learn,' he said. 'You learn from these situations. It's a perfect opportunity to learn, because it's not a do-or-die game. It's not a game that we are going to lose points on, or lose our status in a competition situation. 'It's a game where it was always prescribed that we were going to make a lot of changes. 'The good thing about it is players, individually, who were given an opportunity, can look at themselves and learn and understand. 'We focused on the take-outs of (Saturday's) game because there were some good passages. 'It just wasn't continuous enough, and it probably wasn't, at times, football-intelligent enough. 'Understanding international football, understanding when a team does break up the game and tries to stop rhythms and so on … we have to be better mentally and even as a coaching staff, we have to be prepared for these opportunities. 'For me, the perfect way of learning these levels of international football is through an experience we had the other day.'

Matildas fall to lowly ranked opponent Panama in friendly

The Matildas have suffered their first defeat under the tenure of new coach Joe Montemurro, losing 1-0 to Panama in Bunbury on Saturday. Despite being 41 places lower than the Australians in the world rankings, Panama was anything but intimidated by an experimental Matildas outfit, whose starting team only included one player - Kaitlyn Torpey – that played from the opening whistle in her side's 1-1 draw with Slovenia last Sunday. Panama substitute Sherline King scored the game's only goal in the 59th minute, pouncing on a loose ball in Australia's penalty area after Matildas goalkeeper Teagan Micah parried a shot from attacking midfielder Marta Cox. It was to be Micah's final contribution in what was a physical encounter after she had gone down minutes earlier under a sturdy challenge from striker Ana Quintero. Micah, who was replaced by recent Brisbane Roar signing Chloe Lincoln, wasn't the only keeper to be forced off during the game, after Panama suffered a setback in the first minute of the match when custodian Yenith Bailey went down clutching at her left knee. A distraught Bailey was eventually stretchered off the field and replaced by Farissa Cordoba. However, despite their early adversity, the visitors recovered, with attacker Riley Tanner coming closest to scoring in the first-half with a powerful strike that smashed into the post in the 41st minute. Tanner, who was born in the United States but is eligible to play for Panama through her mother's heritage, also had an opportunity earlier in the half, but her shot was well blocked by Matildas defender Natasha Prior. Panama continued to attack after half-time, and was rewarded with King's goal. Matildas substitute Michelle Heyman should have equalised in stoppage-time, but inexplicably failed to hit the target from point-blank range. Despite the loss in his third game in charge of the Matildas, Montemurro was able to give four players - Adriana Taranto, Jacynta Galabadaarachchi, Alexia Apostolakis and Grace Kuilamu – their national team debuts. Matildas midfielder Chloe Berryhill said her team was 'ironing out some kinks' under Montemurro. 'It's not the result that we want but it's building blocks for us,' Berryhill told Paramount Plus. 'We're just blooding players at the moment.'

A 3-0 win over Slovenia in Perth was the best start possible for new Matildas coach Joe Montemurro

New Matildas coach Joe Montemurro said Thursday night's 3-0 win over Slovenia in Perth was the 'perfect game'. Montemurro took charge of the Matildas for the first time since being announced as coach on June 2. He had only three training sessions with the squad before Thursday night's friendly. Montemurro said Slovenia had provided them the type of game they needed. 'We have to put ourselves in positions, especially against the team that played player on player, to be comfortable receiving the ball under pressure,' he said. 'And we made, I think, three or four big errors in that. 'But I'm not concerned, because it's the process going forward. 'For me, it was the perfect game. It was the perfect game; a team that's pressured all over the pitch, and we have to be comfortable under that pressure. 'We have to learn to be that. 'So, for me it was an important exercise tonight.' The Matildas had the first goal scored after just three minutes. None of the Slovenian players had registered a pass at that time. Australia then had to wait 83 minutes for the next goal though, which was quickly followed by a third. Substitute Hayley Raso was among the action for the last two goals, passing one to Holly McNamara for her first international goal. She kicked the last one herself. In between, Slovenia squandered the most opportunities. It had 20 shots on goal, to the Matilda's 18. Australia goalkeeper Teagan Micah was awarded player of the match for her six saves, although a couple of them were made easy by the opposition kicking it straight into her arms. 'It was an entertaining game,' Montemurro said. 'It could have been what, 6-5, or 7-6, or something? 'But look, for me, it was a very, very important test, because a team that will play player on player, in that manner, you know, we have to learn. 'We have to learn to be better under these circumstances, because a lot of teams will do this.' Slovenia is likely to do it again on Sunday when the two sides meet in the second and final friendly, again at Perth's HBF Park.
