The vanishing of Bubba Watson – how golf's forgotten icon and double Masters champ is fighting back

Bubba Watson is showing signs of life again following serious knee surgery and dropping off the big-time radar Bullish Bubba Watson reckons he's emerging from the anguish of serious injury and a major career slump. ‌ The American star was once a huge name in the game having claimed two-time Masters wins at Augusta and peaking at World No.2 in the rankings. ‌ Watson was a Ryder Cup regular and won 15 times on the circuit in total before a move to join LIV Golf. ‌ The 46-year-old was out for eight months after a serious knee injury required surgery and he returned to the game at the beginning of 2023. Watson has been a pale shadow of his former self in the time period since, but there have been real shards of light in recent weeks and again at this week's LIV event in England. ‌ The colourful star managed a tied-14th at the Masters this year having missed the cut in the previous two years, has had two LIV Top 10s this term and now sits second with a round to go at JCB Golf and Country Club. It's been slow progress, but Watson can finally feel good things happening and explained: 'The last couple years, it's been a struggle. Been a struggle mentally, physically and golf-wise. You want to play better, right? 'You don't think about it until it happens, where my knee, my forward knee is where I like to put all my weight on chipping and putting, and then when you go through surgery and go through muscle changes, you kind of create bad habits, and so my bad habits, getting back on my heels, maybe even on my other side, so I'm not the same technique that I've always used, if that makes sense. ‌ 'So in all my years of practicing and playing, my technique has now changed over these last couple years, so we really dug in and tried to figure out what it is. So we've tried to figure out that, and I think we made a big step forward in finding out what it is. 'As my leg gets stronger, it takes two years for your leg to get stronger in that position, so here we are. Now we're talking about some of my best finishes. Hopefully we can keep it going.' Watson is second with 18 holes to go in Staffordshire behind runaway leader Joaquin Niemann, but said: 'A high finish puts me, I think I'm like 30th or 31st in points, so it'll probably put me back close to top 24. 'I want to have a strong finish to the year and I see that I can do it. Now, will I do it is the question. But I would love to finish in the Top 20 if not better and have a chance to win and then challenge the Team Championship in match play. 'All of this is a positive step forward going forward in my career. Obviously the better finish I can do, the better it is for me, better for the team, better for everything. Yeah, I'm going to get out there and battle. 'Second place right now looks like it's a good place to finish, so it's going to be a battle for the second place, if nothing else.'

Bubba Watson shows true colours revealing LIV Golf 'struggles' as he uses PGA Tour caddie

Bubba Watson has noted how he has struggled both on and off the course recently, but looks to have returned to his best at LIV Golf UK. It's been an encouraging week for the RangeGoats captain in Rocester, who is on track for his highest finish since moving over to the breakaway league from the PGA Tour in 2022. In the years since, Watson has struggled with injury and dips in form, even finishing in the relegation zone last season. But after presenting a compelling "business case" to the league and his team, he ultimately saw his spot on the roster reinstated for 2024. Reflecting on a challenging time, Watson told the press: "The last couple of years, it's been a struggle. Been a struggle mentally, physically, and golf-wise. You want to play better, right?" He added: "I want to have a strong finish to the year, and I see that I can do it. Now, will I do it? That is the question. But I would love to finish in the top 20, if not better, and have a chance to win and then challenge the Team Championship in match play. "All of this is a positive step forward in my career. It's going to be a battle for the second place, if nothing else." Watson's words are clearly a testament to a solid mentality, and he has utilised his struggles as a launch pad to bounce back in form. However, his new caddie Kyle Peters has also played his own role in helping the 46-year-old find his feet again. Peters joined Watson for the 2025 season, having previously worked with PGA Tour luminary Corey Conners. And the LIV star has credited his new looper for improvements in his game, particularly on the green. He said: "I'm making the putts," adding: "Obviously, caddie change. Listening to him on the greens, working with him on my putting, it's been fun. It's energized me. "I feel like a young kid out here learning the game all over again. It's exciting, and I've been calm, working on the mental side of it, and I've been calm out there on the golf course, and it's paying off."

Talor Gooch wins LIV Golf Andalucia, collects his 13th overall LIV trophy

Jon Rahm's Legion XIII won a LIV team title for the third time this season and they did so in his home country of Spain at at LIV Golf Andalucia. It was Talor Gooch winning the individual crown for the fourth time ‒ and second at Valderrama ‒ in his LIV career, shooting a 1-under 70 and finished at 8 under. 'The fans, they're great even if you're not a Spaniard,' said Gooch. 'Obviously I know that they want one of their own to win, but I never felt like the spoiler. They've embraced me so much. Having won here two years ago, I think I've garnered a few more fans.' Gooch now has 13 LIV trophies. Along with the four individual titles, he's been on the winning team seven times (with three different teams) to go along with the 2022 Team Championship title and the 2023 LIV Individual Championship. He was previously tied with Bryson DeChambeau at 12 combined wins. 'That's a pretty cool stat,' Gooch said. 'I didn't know I had the most trophies on LIV. I'll be sure to let everyone know in JCB [at LIV Golf UK] that that's the case.' Gooch won after shaking off two bogeys on his first six holes but hung on as Rahm almost tracked him down. Starting six shots back, Rahm needed to birdie his last hole but could only get up-and-down to save par. 'Can't believe back-to-back years we got a win with a Spanish member on the team, so at least keep it in the family,' Rahm said. 'That's something I'm happy about. What a great Sunday we had.' Formula E: Porsche and Nissan locked in intense battle for Team Championship

Image credit: Formula E Oliver Rowland of Nissan may be well ahead of Pascal Wehrlein of Porsche in terms of points, but their teams are currently locked in a neck-and-neck battle. Rowland has 171 points, while Wehrlein has 103 points in the Drivers' Standings. The Porsche driver will need a major turnaround — and hope the results start going in his favour — to catch up with the top-placed Rowland. Porsche vs Nissan: Neck-and-neck in Formula E Team Standings However, the situation is quite different in the Team Standings. Porsche are on top with 191 points, while Nissan are just one point behind with 190. This close competition has added an extra layer of excitement to the championship. Formula E's official social media handle shared a special post highlighting the tight battle between the two teams: 'The top is getting busy. @PorscheFormulaE and @NISMO battling it out for the Team Championship @Hankook_Sport #ShanghaiEPrix,' Formula E's handle posted. How points system works for Formula E teams Every team has two drivers. It depends on the positions the two drivers of the same team capture. The points of the two drivers combined in a race are considered as team points, and that's how team standings come into the picture. The race winner or the first-position driver gets 25 points, the second-placed gets 18 points, third-placed gets 15 points, fourth-placed gets 12 points, fifth-placed gets 10 points, sixth-placed gets 8 points, seventh-placed gets 6 points, eighth-placed gets 4 points, ninth-placed gets 2 points, and 10th-placed gets 1 point. Example: If a team's two drivers finish 3rd and 7th, they will earn 15 + 6 = 21 points for that race. The Formula E points system 1st: 25 Pts 2nd: 18 Pts 3rd: 15 Pts 4th: 12 Pts 5th: 10 Pts 6th: 8 Pts 7th: 6 Pts 8th: 4 Pts 9th: 2 Pts 10th: 1 Pt For Porsche, Wehrlein has clinched 103 points, while his teammate Antonio Felix da Costa has 88 points. For Nissan, Rowland has 171 points, but his teammate Norman Nato's poor show this season has cost the team dearly. Nato has just 19 points to his name. It's Rowland's sheer dominance this season that has kept his team in the Team Championship race. Also Read: Formula E Season 12 calendar unveiled, has 18 races in 12 cities on the list With five races to go in the season — one in Jakarta, two in Berlin, and two in London— the race for the Team Championship heats up, and it will be interesting to see who clinches the title at the end of the season.
