Part-time teachers continue to protest for permanent appointment
Chennai: The state-wide protest by part-time teachers from several associations, seeking permanent appointments and the grant of a promised medical insurance worth 10 lakh, entered its second day on Wednesday. In Chennai, over 50 teachers staged a protest near Sivanandam Salai. A team of teachers also met chief secretary N Muruganandam and school education secretary B Chandramohan, seeking the fulfilment of their demands. "Chief secretary said that our demands cannot be met at the moment as new posts must be created. Getting financial sanctions will be difficult," said S Murali of TN Special Teachers Association. "DMK's election manifesto promised our posts would be made permanent. How many more days does this govt need to fulfil this?" he questioned. On Tuesday, several teachers who protested were detained across the state. Cases were filed against 1,900 teachers across the state. "In Chennai, they were detained in marriage halls and released later in the evening," said TN part-time teachers federation's Chennai secretaryK Natramizhan. Even after a decade, we get 12,500 a month. Even this amount is not disbursed in one go. The 10 lakh medical insurance promised by minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi when we intensified our protests last year has not come through yet," said Senthil Kumaran, state coordinator of the part-time teachers federation. Most of these demands are brushed aside on the grounds that we work only for a few hours, a teacher said. "Many times, our HMs make us work the entire day. We are sidelined at work if we don't do that," he said. The part-time teachers were hired in 2012 to teach eight subjects under the scheme, including music, arts, and tailoring. Today, the number of teachers has come down to just over 11,000 from 16,000 in 2012, Kumaran said. "We will intensify the protest," added Natramizhan.

Tourism department to add EV charging stations at hotels across state
Indore: Madhya Pradesh tourism department is adding electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at its hotels across the state in a phased manner, starting with 55 properties. This move is seen as creating infrastructure for future generation vehicles. The infrastructure upgrade, aimed at offering modern amenities to increasing number of tourists visiting Madhya Pradesh, is set to roll out in phases, with an initial focus on high-traffic tourist destinations. Among the key locations targeted for the installation of EV charging stations are Mandu, Ujjain, Omkareswar, Gandhi Sagar, Hanuwantiya, Jhabua, Maheswar, Pachmarhi, Orchha, Jabalpur, Pench, Kanha, Bandhavgarh, Chanderi, and Amarkantak. "With the growing prevalence of EVs on the roads, enhancing infrastructure is essential to accommodate this shift. This initiative is to give a boost to the EV ecosystem in the state. Tourists will also reap benefits of this initiative," Madhya Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (MPTDC) MD, Ilayaraja T said. MPTDC operates 67 hotels throughout the state and plans to establish EV charging stations at 55 of them, providing a much-needed service for eco-conscious travellers. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Tecno Pova 7 Series: Making Your Phone Feel Ancient. To move forward, MPTDC has issued a tender seeking bids from private investors interested in setting up and operating these stations. "We have called for tenders to invite private investors to establish the stations. These stations will operate on a charging basis, and a portion of the revenue will be directed to us. This is the first time we are incorporating EV stations, and we anticipate this will attract investment and generate revenue for the state," Ilayaraja T said.

1k hectares grassland in Barda sanctuary to help more lions roar
Rajkot: Barda Wildlife Sanctuary in Porbandar district is steadily coming into its own as a natural extension of lion territory. Once a quiet reserve, Barda is now at the heart of a major conservation effort to create a self-sustaining habitat for Asiatic lions . The forest department has launched a project focused on restoring native grasslands and strengthening the prey base — laying the groundwork for lions to thrive here on their own. Spread across 1,000 hectares, the sanctuary is undergoing a green revival. Invasive plant species are being cleared on a large scale, and native grasses are being cultivated to support herbivores that form the base of the lion's food chain. According to the latest lion census, Barda is now home to 17 lions. The first — a solitary male — arrived naturally. Soon after, five lionesses were translocated to the sanctuary, and their successful mating led to the birth of 11 cubs. With this, Barda has proven itself as a naturally viable habitat. Forest officials have taken a hands-off approach, allowing the population to grow organically. The groundwork for this success was laid years ago. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Tecno Pova 7 Series starting at 12,999 - Catch the light. TECNO Mobile Buy Now Undo In 2014, the forest department set up a breeding centre for Sambar and spotted deer. Since then, hundreds of herbivores born in captivity have been released into the wild, helping to establish a solid prey base for the growing lion population. But restoring the landscape hasn't been easy. Deputy conservator of forests, Ravi Prasad Radhakrishna, pointed out that invasive species — such as single acacia (Acacia nilotica), Lantana camara, and Cassia tora — have posed a major challenge. "These alien species prevent native grasses from germinating," he said. "We've launched an intensive removal drive and are promoting native grass species to rebuild a healthy ecosystem for herbivores. " Experts believe birds may have unknowingly contributed to the spread of these invasives, either by carrying seeds on their feathers or excreting them after feeding elsewhere. "Barda is increasingly seen as Gujarat's second home for lions," Radhakrishna said. "With lions naturally dispersing into the area, we're shaping the habitat to support that expansion. In time, we expect the population to reach ecological saturation." The sanctuary now also hosts Nilgai and wild boar — adding further richness to the food chain. Officials believe Barda has the potential to support up to 40 to 50 lions in total. Recognizing its ecological promise, the forest department has also launched a jungle safari to boost eco-tourism and raise public awareness—inviting people to witness the quiet revival of a forest now finding its roar.

Bodh Gaya Buddhists slam China's ‘control tactics'
Patna: The sacred land of Bodh Gaya is seething with anger. Members of the Buddhist community have expressed deep outrage over China's attempt to dictate terms on the succession of the 14th Dalai Lama, considered both a spiritual and political leader by Tibetans. The controversy erupted after Beijing rejected the Dalai Lama's declaration that his reincarnation would be recognised solely by the trust he founded. China insisted any future Dalai Lama must be chosen through its own state-sanctioned processes, including the archaic "Golden Urn" method. Bhante Priyapal, chief priest of Chakma Temple and a member of the International Buddhist Council, described China's actions as "totally unfair" and an extension of its expansionist policy. "Only the Dalai Lama should have the authority to name his successor," he said. Bhante Anand, general secretary of the Bhartiya Sangharaj Bhikkuu Mahasabha, voiced unanimous support. "The Dalai Lama is not just a spiritual leader but the King of Tibet. Only he has the right to choose his successor," he said. Tibetan Lama Tashi Guruji added, "We will only go by the Dalai Lama's decision. China must not meddle in our spiritual affairs." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Tecno Pova 7 Series: Making Your Phone Feel Ancient. "Still, the community stands firmly with the Dalai Lama," he said. China affairs expert Ajay Jha cautioned that the issue could further strain Sino-Indian relations. "India must tread carefully," he added.
