20-year-old's tenacity on the track takes her to record heights

KHAMMAM: From the tribal hamlets of Kothagudem to podium finishes, 20-year-old Tholem Sri Teja is chasing an Olympic dream, one stride at a time. Born to agricultural labourers in Karakagudem mandal, Bhadradri Kothagudem district, Teja's journey is defined by grit, discipline and the desire to lift her family out of poverty while making India proud. A product of a modest tribal school in Bhadrachalam, Teja first caught the attention of athletics coach Pamu Nagendra Babu during a district sports meet in 2021. At the time, she was in Class 8. Encouraged by her PET teacher Kavitha, and guided by Nagendra's specialised training, Teja began a rigorous pursuit of excellence in track and field. She hasn't looked back since. Now training at Pullela Gopichand Academy in Hyderabad, Teja has already clinched 12 state-level medals and four national medals, including a recent gold in the U-20 heptathlon at Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. Her motivation? A promise to her parents, Venkateswarlu and Malleswari, who toil daily to make ends meet. 'We are illiterate and don't fully understand what our daughter is doing, but we know she's achieving something big that brings pride to us and our village,' they say. 'Despite their situation, my parents have always encouraged me with whatever little they had,' Teja tells TNIE. 'Initially, I just wanted to make them happy, to give them a life of dignity. Now, my goal is to win an Olympic medal for India.' Her coach, Nagendra, calls her relentless. 'We saw extraordinary commitment in her early training. That's when we knew she was ready for the next level,' Nagendra says. With minimal resources but unwavering determination, Teja is now a beacon of hope for young girls in tribal communities, say locals.

Intelligence officer's son under scanner of Telangana police in inter-state drug racket probe

Hyderabad: The son of a senior Telangana intelligence wing officer has landed in the crosshairs of EAGLE, the state's anti-narcotics task force, for his suspected role in a sprawling inter-state drug racket that was recently busted in Kompally. The name of Rahul Teja surfaced during the investigation after sleuths analysed call records and other technical evidence linked to the accused. Interestingly, Teja had earlier managed to stay off the radar despite being named as a key accused in a Jan 2024 narcotics case investigated by Nizamabad police—raising eyebrows within enforcement circles. EAGLE officials began tracking Teja following the arrest of six people last week, including restaurant owner Surya Annamaneni. During questioning and technical analysis, investigators discovered Surya's alleged link with Teja, who is also from Kompally. 'But during verification, it emerged that his name had appeared in an earlier drugs case, where he was declared absconding,' he said. That case pertains to early 2024 when Nizamabad police apprehended two men, D Vikram and Khaja Mohiddin Chisty, who were transporting cocaine and MDMA along the Nagpur-Hyderabad route. Though he was named in the FIR and chargesheet, Teja was never arrested, nor did he obtain anticipatory bail. 'Mysteriously, he remained untouched,' the EAGLE source added. In the latest Kompally case, drugs were reportedly couriered from Delhi—concealed in a pair of shoes by a foreign national—and delivered to Surya. The footwear and drugs were later seized by police. According to the Nizamabad police chargesheet: 'The accused confessed that under Teja's instructions, they toured Delhi, Ludhiana, and Himachal Paradesh over the last week. They sourced cocaine, MDMA, and ganja powder from one Mike and his associates. The consignment was intended for Teja, his associates, and their social circle.' Apart from his alleged involvement in drug peddling, Teja also runs a restaurant in Hyderabad.

The Telugu social drama film is streaming on the OTT platform ETV Win, starting today, June 27. Taking to X, the platform shared a poster of the film to announce the same. The film depicts three real-life events from the 1990s: the Chundur massacre, the Chilakaluripeta bus fire, and the Jubilee Hills bombing. The plot mainly focuses on Sagar's journey as he navigates poverty, cultural pressures and the legal consequences of a crime he commits while attempting to improve his and his loved ones' lives. Earlier, during the promotion of the film, director Raj opened up about how he came up with the idea of 23 (Iravai Moodu). He said, 'One of my friends about the 1993 Chilakaluripet bus burning event. Of course, I was aware of the occurrence throughout my undergraduate years, but I also had a binary mindset at the time. Now I realise how flawed I was. Acceptance, repentance, guilt, reform, and redemption may all be seen in Valmiki and Angulimala's stories. While the Chilakaluripet tragedy had a compassionate aspect, I was unsure whether I could redeem the accused," as quoted by Cinema Express. He added, 'Coincidentally, another friend told me of the 1991 Tsunduru mass killings, in which the accused intended to kill. While it didn't fit into the screenplay structure on its own, I thought, Why not combine the two events? Then we had a story." Apart from Teja and Tanmai, the film also features actors like Jhansi, Pawon Ramesh, Thagubothu Ramesh, and Praneeth in key roles. First Published:

14-day remand for man who waved provocative placard at Jagan rally

1 2 Vijayawada: The man who waved 'Rappa Rappa' placards during former chief minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy 's public meeting recently was arrested and produced at Sattenapalli court, which sent him in judicial remand for 14 days. B Ravi Teja, a resident of Krosuru, was seen holding placards with a slogan combined with a dialogue from 'Pushpa' movie. The slogan claimed that after YSRCP returns to power in 2029, heads will be chopped like in Gangamma Jathara (Rappa Rappa Narukutham). The placards with the beheading threat sparked a row, following which police registered a case against him. A habeas corpus petition was moved before the high court for Teja on Friday by his family members, alleging that his whereabouts were not known. They sought directions to the police to produce him before the court. However, the public prosecutor informed the high court that Teja was arrested in the case, and was being produced before the magistrate concerned as per the norms. On Saturday, police produced him before Sattenapalli court and sought remand in view of the ongoing investigation. Considering the remand report submitted by the police, the magistrate sent him to 14 days of judicial remand.

Foundation seeds of three chilli varieties available for sale at Regional Horticultural Research Station, Lam Farm, starting June 16, says official

The Regional Horticultural Research Station, Lam Farm, Associate Director C. Venkata Ramana, has stated that foundation seeds of three chilli varieties — LCA-625, LCA-657 and LCA-643 — will be available for sale starting Monday, June 16. In a press release on Friday, he said that the LCA-643 variety is suitable for both green chilli and dry chilli production. The pods are long (13–14 cm), light green in color and attractive. When dried, they appear slightly wrinkled and have a bright red color, resembling the Byadgi variety. It has good tolerance to leaf curl disease and some resistance to Gemini virus. It also yields well even under infestation by Helicoverpa (Spodoptera) if managed with minimal pesticide use, he said. Mr. Venkata Ramana said that the LCA-625 variety is ideal for dry chilli. Plants are tall, with strong branches and dense foliage due to closely spaced nodes. It is especially suitable for direct sowing in the main field. The pods are slender, medium in length (8–10 cm), and resemble the Teja variety. The green pods are dark green, and when ripened, they are highly pungent (45,000–50,000 SHU) with attractive red colour (60–65 ASTA). The skin is thin, and due to its pungency, it has some resistance to fruit rot disease and low flower drop, he said. Mr. Venkata Ramana said that the LCA-657 variety is suitable for direct sowing post-kharif season and is tolerant to Gemini virus. The plants are tall with strong stems and upright branches, supported by a robust root system. The pods are long (11–12 cm), dark green, and turn deep red with a white calyx when ripe, making them visually appealing. It has a high pungency (50,000–55,000 SHU) and attractive color. The variety is also drought-tolerant, he said. Farmers interested in purchasing these seeds can visit the Regional Horticultural Research Station, Lam Farm, from June 16, between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. daily, as long as the seed stock is available. Lam Farm will be closed on second Saturdays and Sundays. The price is ₹1,200 per kg. The chilli seeds are available exclusively at Lam Farm, and if anyone outside claims to sell the same seeds under the same names, farmers should not purchase them. For more information, people should contact 99898 09554 / 94405 92982, he added
