100 years of the Telegraph crossword: A week-long celebration
This week 100 years ago, the Telegraph decided on a novelty: a 'six-week diversion' to boost newspaper sales during the summer. The crossword was born. A century and almost 31,000 puzzles later, it has proven a remarkable survivor.
To celebrate this centenary, we will be publishing a host of special features, including a 30-day challenge on our puzzles page to solve 30 very special crosswords from our history. Try to finish them all.
If you are completely new to crosswords, fear not, for there will be an interactive guide to solving cryptic clues.
And once you have got the hang of it, at the end of the week you will be able to try out a new puzzle created by the very best in the business: GCHQ – and it comes with a very special prize attached.
We hope you enjoy solving them as much as we enjoy setting them. Here's to the next 100 years of the Telegraph crossword!
