Tengku Permaisuri Selangor proclaimed first chancellor of Universiti Islam Selangor
BANGI, July 19 —Tengku Permaisuri Selangor, Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin, has been proclaimed as the first Chancellor of Universiti Islam Selangor (UIS). The Letter of Appointment was officially conferred by the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, during the university's 27th Proclamation and Convocation Ceremony held in Kajang today. Their Majesties arrived at the Dewan Sultan Idris Shah, UIS, at 9 am, accompanied by Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari. Also in attendance were Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Mohd Na'im Mokhtar and Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir. Sultan Sharafuddin also presented appointment letters to Senator Datuk Salehuddin Saidin as Pro-Chancellor I and Datuk Mohamad Adzib Mohd Isa as Pro-Chancellor II. — Bernama

Royal launch for navy's second LCS

The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, also graced the ceremony. The vessel was named Raja Muda Nala, and as a symbolic gesture, water kept in a jar and blessed with Surah Yasin recitations from nine mosques, representing Selangor's nine districts, was released onto the ship's bow. The naming and launching of a ship is a naval tradition dating back to the founding of the UK's Royal Navy, serving as an identity before a new vessel is officially commissioned into service. Also present were Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan, Deputy Defence Minister Adly Zahari, Chief of Defence Forces Jen Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaffar, Navy Chief Admiral Tan Sri Dr Zulhelmy Ithnain, Air Force Chief Jen Datuk Muhamad Norazlan Aris and Lumut Naval Shipyard (Lunas) chief executive officer Azhar Jumaat. Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin officiates the ship's naming and launch ceremony. — Bernama Meanwhile Adly, when delivering the speech on behalf of Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, said the name Raja Muda Nala was chosen in honour of a renowned national warrior who led the people of Selangor in resisting Dutch control. He said the name symbolises the determination, courage and fighting spirit of the warrior in defending the sovereignty of Selangor. 'In this context, the valour, struggle and bravery of Raja Muda Nala are seen as highly fitting and aligned with the capabilities of the RMN's Littoral Combat Ship, which is designed to face a wide range of threats in modern warfare,' he said. He also said the procurement of littoral combat ships is part of RMN's strategic plan to enhance fleet readiness through the acquisition of high-tech, combat-capable assets with multi-mission capabilities to safeguard the country's maritime sovereignty. Adly added that LCS 2 is a symbol of national pride as it is the first frigate-class ship to be fully constructed by a local company, Lunas.

Selangor Sultan extends Aidiladha greetings, calls for stricter measures against rising haj scams
SHAH ALAM, June 7 — The Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, has expressed sadness and disappointment over the rise in fraudulent haj travel packages affecting Muslims in the country. His Royal Highness said it was especially disheartening that those exploiting the situation were Muslims themselves, who were willing to deceive their fellow believers for personal gain. In this regard, His Royal Highness decreed that stern action be taken against any individual or travel agency offering haj packages that take advantage of and deceive Muslims. Sultan Sharafuddin said this in a post on the Selangor Royal Office's Facebook page, in which His Royal Highness and the Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor, Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin, extended Hari Raya Aidiladha greetings to Muslims across Malaysia. Sultan Sharafuddin also called on Muslims to uphold the sanctity of the haj by ensuring that all arrangements are made through licensed and recognised agents and companies authorised by the authorities to manage haj and umrah affairs. At the same time, Their Royal Highnesses prayed that Malaysian pilgrims would be granted a mabrur haj and return home safely. According to the statement, the Sultan and the Tengku Permaisuri also hoped that this Aidiladha would inspire all Muslims to be grateful for Allah's blessings and to perform the sacrificial rites to help the poor, as well as reflect on the plight of the less fortunate. — Bernama

Car boot sale puts PJ celebrations in high gear

The law graduate from Universiti Teknologi Mara Melaka makes RM200 to RM300 a day selling pre-loved clothes. 'I used to donate my clothes for recycling but after seeing friends selling pre-loved items, I started selling mine as well,' she said. Dayana sells from her car in the outdoor carpark of the business square Bistari De Kota along Jalan Teknologi 3/9 in Kota Damansara. The venue has been the spot for weekly car boot sales since 2013. It got a boost after being chosen to host celebrations marking 19 years since Petaling Jaya gained city status. Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin launched the celebrations, marking the start of 31 activities organised by Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) under the theme 'Petaling Jaya Bandar Paling Bahagia'. The activities, including community programmes and competitions, are being held throughout June. Accompanying the Tengku Permaisuri in visiting the booths were Selangor Women's Welfare and Charity Organisation (Pekawanis) president Datin Seri Masdiana Muhamad and Petaling Jaya mayor Mohamad Zahri Samingon. The Kota Damansara car boot sale is the second such community event being held regularly in Petaling Jaya. Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin, accompanied by the Petaling Jaya mayor, visiting the booths set up at the Kota Damansara car boot sale. Another one is held at Kompleks C MBPJ in Section 52. The Kota Damansara sale runs from 7am to 12pm on Sunday while the Section 52 sale is from 6pm to midnight on Saturday. Both events, which are community-run and monitored by MBPJ, offer a total of 647 parking bays for sellers. Mohamad Zahri said several other initiatives were kicked off during the anniversary celebrations launch. These included 'Food With Love', a new care economy programme organised by MBPJ. 'The project will see halal meals prepared at a central kitchen run by a non-governmental organisation (NGO). 'The meals will be distributed to eligible senior citizens and disabled individuals who register under MBPJ's guidelines,' he said. Mohamad Zahri highlighted that MBPJ was the first local council to introduce a senior citizens' guideline − the Senior Citizen Action Plan 2030 − to address the needs of a growing ageing population. He added that MBPJ was also the first local council in Malaysia to have set up a children's council. Mohamad Zahri said the anniversary theme was aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, Malaysia Madani and the First Selangor Plan. 'MBPJ has offered free training programmes since 2022. 'More than 5,000 business owners have participated in courses covering marketing, AI tools, and banking,' he said. The mayor said MBPJ had also been sending the top 10 participants for overseas educational trips annually. 'Past destinations have included Bandung, Bangkok and Vietnam. China may be the destination for this year,' he said. At the launch, Malaysia Book of Records held a presentation to recognise MBPJ for having played a leading role in setting up the PJ Eco Recycling Plaza. The three-floor recycling centre in Sungai Way Free Trade Industrial Zone was set up in collaboration with seven NGOs and professional bodies. The Eco Recycling Plaza has been officially recognised by Malaysia Book of Records as the country's first excellent-rated centre of environmental sustainability managed by a local authority.
