Coco Gauff suffers first round Wimbledon upset: Star loses to Ukraine's Yastremska

Coco Gauff is second top three player to lose at Wimbledon. French Open champion Coco Gauff was eliminated in the first round of Wimbledon by Dayana Yastremska. Yastremska, ranked No. 42, achieved the biggest win of her career by defeating No. 2 seed Gauff 7-6(3), 6-1 on Centre Court on Tuesday, thwarting the American star's bid for her second Grand Slam title of the year. Gauff became the fourth woman in the top 10 rankings to lose in the first round, joining Jessica Pegula, Qinwen Zheng, and Paula Badosa. "Playing against Coco it is something special. I played with her already three times, of course now four. It's 3-1 for her. And a great person and we're in very good relationship," Yastremska said after her Wimbledon victory. This year's Wimbledon marks the first time since 1968 that two of the top three seeds were eliminated in the first round. Naomi Osaka opens up about Nick Kyrgios's 'embarrassing' surprise for her at Wimbledon

Four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka has opened up about how controversial Aussie Nick Kyrgios made an unexpected appearance in her coaching box at Wimbledon. Disrupted by knee and wrist injuries, Kyrgios will not be involved as a player at Wimbledon, making this the third consecutive year he has missed out. His last appearance on the court at Wimbledon came in 2022, when he lost the final to Novak Djokovic. Last year the 30-year-old was a part of the BBC 's punditry team, alongside Tim Henman and John McEnroe, but was not included this time around. The broadcaster's decision to include the Australian on the panel 12 months after he admitted to assaulting his former girlfriend Chiara Passari - but avoided a criminal conviction - was met with a fierce backlash from the public and MPs. Kyrgios was also overlooked by ESPN this year despite featuring on their panel at the Australian Open, and previously worked for the Tennis Channel and TNT Sports. However, the Aussie firebrand is at the event this year after securing a punditry role with TalkSport - and on day one of the tournament he watched Osaka in action on Court 18. Kyrgios, who is signed to Osaka's management group, is set to play mixed doubles with the Japanese star at the US Open in August. Following her 6-4 7-6 win over Talia Gibson, Osaka was asked about Kyrgios in her player's box and she admitted she had no idea he was there. 'Oh, he was there? I did not hear anything, OK,' she said. Osaka added: 'Oh, my God. I jokingly told someone, "Hey, I know Nick's around, maybe he wants to come to my match". 'But I was joking, because I know we're two completely different players. Honestly, I would have loved to come to his matches, because I know he's pretty fun. 'Yeah, I think that's also a big part of why we're different is because I know he kind of tells his box what to do, and he probably would have noticed if I was in there. I kind of zone out most of the time. 'That's a little embarrassing that he was there. 'I guess it is cool that he was there.' Kyrgios has been tormented by a succession of injuries in the last two-and-a-half years and has only played six singles and three doubles matches since the start of 2023, winning one of each. But the prospect of the short-form event at the US Open with Osaka, and a star-studded cast, has persuaded him to enter along with a series of intriguing pairings. Only two of the 20 current top-10 male and female players have to date declined to put their names forward in a victory for the organisers' rebrand, the creation of which drew condemnation from regular doubles players including Australia's Ellen Perez. Men's No.1 Jannik Sinner has paired with American women's world No.9 Emma Navarro and men's No.2 Carlos Alcaraz with former US Open winner Emma Raducanu. Women's No.1 Aryna Sabalenka has linked up with men's No.19 Grigor Dimitrov. Men's No.9 Holger Rune and women's No.2 Coco Gauff are the current top-10 players not to have entered so far, nor have Australian No.1s Alex de Minaur and Daria Kasatkina - the entry window closes on July 28. However, de Minaur said he and his British fiancee Kate Boulter, currently world No.39, were planning on doing so. 'We're definitely going to be keen to try and play if they allow us to and if they want us to,' he said. 'If that's an option, then we'll definitely be up for it.' Sixteen teams have signed up with the top eight with the best combined singles ranking guaranteed a place along with eight wildcard entries.

Gauff, Sabalenka to resume rivalry for place on Wimbledon merry-go-round

Coco Gauff prevailed in the French Open final against Aryna Sabalenka earlier this month. (EPA Images pic) LONDON : The Wimbledon women's throne has turned into tennis' version of musical chairs with new champions in the last seven years and all signs point to another one as Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff resume their simmering rivalry on the pristine lawns of London. The All England Club has not crowned a repeat champion since 2016 when Serena Williams captured the 22nd of her 23 Grand Slam trophies and the chances of injury-hit holder Barbora Krejcikova rediscovering her miraculous level from 12 months ago are slim. Elena Rybakina and Marketa Vondrousova, whose names precede Krejcikova on the iconic honours board, remain dangerous players on the sport's fastest surface but all eyes will be on the women who contested an error-strewn but enthralling French Open final. American Gauff prevailed in this month's Roland Garros title clash against Belarusian Sabalenka and the 21-year-old will head to the venue of her breakthrough as a teenager in 2019 eager to finally conquer grass after clay court and hard court success. Gauff did not enjoy a good start to the grass swing after suffering a stunning second-round loss to Wang Xinyu in Berlin, but former Wimbledon quarter-finalist CoCo Vandeweghe said the two-time Major champion will learn from the experience. 'I don't think this shakes her confidence,' Vandeweghe told the Tennis Channel. 'This isn't going to be her best surface, but you know what she's going to do? She's going to take this loss and really work on herself. That's what we've seen time and time again from Gauff. She's the ultimate competitor. 'That's what we always see from Coco, as much as we talk about the negative aspects of what goes wrong in her game, what we don't talk about enough is what goes right.' Point to prove Sabalenka, who was beaten by Gauff in another long final at the US Open two years ago, will also have a point to prove in London with the three-time Major winner looking to make up for lost time after missing last year's Wimbledon with injury. Since then she has contested three successive Grand Slam finals, triumphing in New York last September but failing to add to her Major trophy haul with runner-up finishes in Melbourne and Paris. Despite being one of the most consistent players over the last two years, marked by a rise to the top spot in the world rankings, Sabalenka has yet to solve the puzzle that grass poses having lost both of her finals on the surface. The 27-year-old reached the Berlin semi-finals before crashing to eventual champion Vondrousova and will be eager to quickly rediscover the form that can devastate her opponents. 'The grass season is a short one, only a few tournaments before Wimbledon,' Sabalenka said after beating Rybakina in the Berlin quarter-finals. 'I wanted to play some matches, I wanted to remember how to play on grass and I'm happy I got what I did.' Madison Keys became the latest entrant into the Grand Slam champions' club with an inspired run to the Australian Open title earlier this year and the stage is set for the big-hitting American to prove she is no one-hit wonder. Vondrousova will have a similar mindset after the former world No 6, ranked 164 at the start of the Berlin tune-up event, became the lowest-ranked champion in the tournament's history after dismantling Keys and Sabalenka along the way. Iga Swiatek will also hope for the rub of the green after a torrid spell following her short ban for a doping violation last year as she looks to go past the quarter-finals of Wimbledon for the first time and add to her collection of five Major titles.
