Aanand L Rai Slams AI-Edited Raanjhanaa Ending In New Post: "The Last Three Weeks Have Been..."
New Delhi: Filmmaker Aanand L Rai has expressed strong disapproval of the AI-edited version of his film Raanjhanaa. Titled Ambikapathy, the Tamil version of the movie is set to be re-released in theatres on August 1 with an alternate, happier ending created using Artificial Intelligence (AI). The production banner Eros International has digitally reshaped the film – without its director's consent. In a post shared on Instagram, Aanand L Rai described the AI-edited version of his film as a jarring and disturbing alteration of his artistic vision. The filmmaker wrote, "The past three weeks have been surreal, and deeply upsetting. To watch Raanjhanaa, a film born out of care, conflict, collaboration, and creative risk, be altered, repackaged, and re-released without my knowledge or consent has been nothing short of devastating. What makes it worse is the complete ease and casualness with which it's been done." View this post on Instagram A post shared by Aanand L Rai (@aanandlrai) Expressing gratitude to his industry colleagues for taking a stand against Eros, Aanand L Rai added, "And yet, in the middle of all this, the support and solidarity from the industry, our audiences, and the larger creative community has reminded me of what Raanjhanaa stood for in the first place – connection, courage, and truth. I'm deeply grateful for that." He continued, "Let me say this as clearly as I can: I do not support or endorse the AI-altered version of Raanjhanaa. It is unauthorised. I had no role in it. Neither did the team that made the film. And whatever it claims to be, it is not the film we intended, or made. This was never just a film to us. It was shaped by human hands, human flaws, and human feeling. What's now being circulated is not a tribute. It is a reckless takeover that strips the work of its intent, its context, and its soul." Aanand L Rai further mentioned that the AI-edited changes to his film are a betrayal of the team's work and legacy. "The idea that our work can be taken and modified by a machine, then dressed up as innovation, is deeply disrespectful. To cloak a film's emotional legacy in a synthetic cape without consent, is not a creative act. It's an abject betrayal of everything we built. I'm speaking for everyone who helped bring this film to life. The writer, actors, composer, lyricist, technicians, and larger crew. None of us were consulted. None of us were heard," the filmmaker wrote. Aanand concluded the post, writing, "If Raanjhanaa meant something to you, as it did to us, please know that this AI-altered version does not reflect who we were. Nor does it carry the spirit of the film we made. For those unversed, Aanand L Rai is expanding the Raanjhanaa universe with another intense love story titled Tere Ishq Mein. The film features Dhanush and Kriti Sanon in the lead roles.

Anand L Rai posts strongly worded note condemning AI-altered ending of Raanjhanaa: ‘An abject betrayal of everything we built'
Last week, SCREEN reported that the producers of the 2013 film Raanjhanaa were planning to re-release the movie with an AI-generated ending on August 1. The news sent shockwaves through the film industry, sparking widespread concern from fans and celebrities online. Now, filmmaker Aanand L Rai, in a heartfelt Instagram post, has clarified that neither he nor the original team had any involvement with the AI-altered version of the film. 'The past three weeks have been surreal, and deeply upsetting,' he wrote. Reflecting on the unauthorized changes made to the film's climax, Rai added, 'To watch Raanjhanaa, a film born out of care, conflict, collaboration, and creative risk, be altered, repackaged, and re-released without my knowledge or consent has been nothing short of devastating. What makes it worse is the complete ease and casualness with which it's been done.' Despite the shock, Aanand L Rai acknowledged the outpouring of support from the industry and the audience: 'And yet, in the middle of all this, the support and solidarity from the industry, our audiences, and the larger creative community has reminded me of what Raanjhanaa stood for in the first place, connection, courage, and truth. I'm deeply grateful for that.' Making his stance unequivocally clear, the filmmaker stated, 'Let me say this as clearly as I can: I do not support or endorse the AI-altered version of Raanjhanaa. It is unauthorised. I had no role in it. Neither did the team that made the film. And whatever it claims to be, it is not the film we intended, or made.' Shared post on Time When SCREEN had reached out to Eros Media World, the studio behind the film, Group CEO Pradeep Dwivedi responded with a statement: 'We are the sole and exclusive copyright holder and producer of Raanjhanaa, and are fully entitled, both legally and ethically, to adapt and re-release the film. This includes re-imagining certain elements using advanced tools such as generative AI to reach new audiences while preserving the original's artistic soul.' He continued, 'Contrary to the claims of 'artistic vandalism', our re-release is a respectful creative reinterpretation, clearly labelled and separate from the original version, offered as an addition to, not a replacement of, the original. Such practices are common in global cinema, and reflect our long-standing commitment to innovation, audience engagement, and cultural preservation.'

Dhanush Says Aanand L Rai Invested Own Money To Cast Him In Raanjhanaa: 'They Didn't Have Budget'
Last Updated: Dhanush reveals he nearly turned down Raanjhanaa due to budget issues, and shares how director Aanand L Rai personally backed him to play Kundan. Dhanush might be a big name in Tamil cinema, but back in 2013, when he was gearing up for his Bollywood debut with Raanjhanaa, things weren't exactly smooth sailing. In fact, he nearly walked away from the film altogether. The actor recently looked back on the film during a special fan screening celebrating its 12th anniversary. While Raanjhanaa became a cult favourite over the years, Dhanush admitted that he was close to saying no – and it all came down to the budget. 'At that time, they didn't have the right kind of budget for hiring me as the lead actor. But this man's (Aanand L Rai) passion was so strong that he just wanted me to play Kundan. He could have offered any actor this part and they would have happily come on board. After all, it's such a great part," Dhanush shared, as quoted in SCREEN. The part he's talking about – Kundan – was a lovestruck Varanasi boy whose obsession and heartbreak eventually pull him into the world of politics. According to him, director Aanand L Rai had to take a big risk to make it happen. 'He went against all odds. I don't know I am supposed to say this and I don't care! He invested his own money as well. He went all out (to cast me). He saw Kundan in me and he stayed true to his vision," Dhanush said. Even for a seasoned performer like Dhanush, the pressure was real. He revealed that stepping into the Hindi film world brought a kind of fear he hadn't experienced before. 'I was not scared during my first film. When I was written off, I was not scared. That's how I am. But for the first time, I was scared. I felt responsible. So, I was praying so hard to God that 'Somehow save this man,'" he said, reflecting on the weight of expectations. In the end, the gamble paid off. Raanjhanaa clicked with audiences and critics alike. 'They made a cult classic. It is not the story of Kundan and Zoya. It is the story of two mad men who believed in this," Dhanush added. The film also starred Sonam Kapoor, Abhay Deol, Swara Bhaskar and Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, and became a defining moment in Aanand L Rai's directorial career. Since Raanjhanaa, Dhanush and Aanand L Rai have teamed up again, including in the 2021 film Atrangi Re, and are working together on Tere Ishq Mein – a film Rai has said is set in 'the same world as Raanjhanaa."
