Wathnan Racing extend Royal Ascot haul in presence of King Charles III

Tribune News Network Ascot (England) In presence of King Charles III and Queen Camilla, Wathnan Racing on Saturday extended their impressive haul and success in the 2025 edition of Royal Ascot as Lazzat (Territories) delivered a bold front-running display to win the Gr.1 Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes over 1200 metres on the final day of the royal meeting. King Charles III presented the trophies to Ali bin Yousef Al Kubaisi, Ali bin Youself Al Romaihi and Oliver Tait, who received it on behalf of Wathnan Racing. The four-year-old gelding is trained in France by Jerome Reynier, was ridden by James Doyle, and now races in the colours of Wathnan Racing, who purchased him following his impressive win in the Listed Prix Servanne at Chantilly last month. Already a top-level winner in the Gr.1 Prix Maurice de Gheest at Deauville last summer, Lazzat added a second Group 1 success to his record and confirmed himself among Europe's elite sprinters. The victory also completed a memorable double on the day for both Wathnan Racing and jockey James Doyle, following their earlier win in the Listed Chesham Stakes with Humidity. Quickly into stride, Lazzat went straight to the front and set an even pace. After two furlongs, the field split into two groups, Lazzat leading the far side, while Storm Boy (Justify) took up the running on the near side, tracked closely by Japanese challenger and race favourite Satono Reve (Lord Kanaloa). As the race developed and the pace lifted, it quickly became a duel between Lazzat and Satono Reve, the pair pulling clear of the rest. Lazzat began to edge across the track toward the near side rail in the final stages, joining the favourite. But despite the drift, he had more to give, finding extra under pressure to win by half a length. Satono Reve finished second, while Flora Of Bermuda (Dark Angel), also representing Wathnan Racing, finished strongly to take third. Bred by Sumbe, Lazzat is out of Lastochka (Australia), a winner over 1600m at two. Lastochka is out of Lashyn(Mr Greeley), a winner over 2000m at three, who herself is a daughter of Sleepytime (Royal Academy), winner of the Gr.1 1000 Guineas over 1600m at three. Sleepytime is a half-sister to Hathal (Speightstown), a Gr.1 winner over 1600m at four, and to Gentleman's Deal (Danehill), winner of the Gr.3 Winter Derby over 2000m at six.

Physical development in KL must be balanced with social needs

KUALA LUMPUR: Physical development in Kuala Lumpur must be balanced with social needs to ensure the city remains conducive and liveable for all generations, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa. She said rapid development must also be accompanied by the capacity of the education system, basic amenities, and support for the local community structure. 'Without a doubt, rapid development in Kuala Lumpur will continue to expand, but the need to align development approvals with the readiness of supporting infrastructure such as schools, clinics, road networks, public transport pressure and green spaces must be considered from the earliest stages of planning. 'The siloed approach between developers and local authorities must be replaced with comprehensive planning that considers the overall impact on the area,' she said in a Facebook post today. Earlier, Dr Zaliha chaired the Federal Territories Ministerial Council Meeting, which serves as an engagement platform between her and Kuala Lumpur MPs, together with agencies such as the Federal Territory Kuala Lumpur Education Department (JPWPKL) and PLANMalaysia, to discuss development policies for the federal capital. 'Unlike other states which have executive councillors and assemblymen, the federal territories require a more dynamic approach to policy coordination between the federal government and MPs. As such, this meeting also served as an engagement session with the JPWPKL and PLANMalaysia to foster a stronger and more responsive understanding of policies that reflect on-the-ground realities. 'I also stated that the involvement of MPs in development issues must be more pragmatic, taking into account data, long-term impacts and environmental readiness, and not merely driven by perception or populist approaches that could only affect policy adaptation,' she added. In a related development, Dr Zaliha said she received a courtesy call today from Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing to strengthen strategic cooperation in the tourism sector within the federal territories. The discussion between the two ministers focused on efforts to elevate Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan as the country's premier tourism destinations, each with their own unique strengths. She also invited the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) to collaborate in promoting the Borneo Flora Festival, which will be held in Labuan for the first time, with a target of attracting over 50,000 visitors. In addition, Putrajaya Corporation and Tourism Malaysia have also been asked to refine the development of more creative new tourism products in Putrajaya, with the aim of extending tourists' stays and offering fresh and unique experiences to encourage returning visitors.

Tips and race-by-race guide for Tamworth on Monday

Track soft 5 and rail out 3m from 1000m to 300m and true the remainder. Race 1 4. Miss You So is an improving three-year-old primed to peak third-up in just his second prep getting out to the mile. Has worked home OK in two runs back and desperate now for a longer journey. Drawn to get cover. 3. Takethemoneryandrun is also suited over this distance third-up, with some weight relief after the jockey's claim. 1. Comancheria can improve third-up over a suitable furlong further. 6. Twenty Four Guns, fourth-up with a significant jockey change, and 7. Fejer Dawn, a lightly raced improver second-up; head the rest. How to play it: Miss You So to win. Race 2 2. Considered is an emerging filly trained on the course, and the one to beat second-up. Was having only her second outing when beaten by a whisker at Inverell 19 days ago as a heavily backed favourite, but fitter now over 100m further, only needs clear air from the 350m to finish best. 3. Pride Of Nations, a locally trained filly by a Doncaster Handicap winner having her first start for the Sue Grills stable, is naturally a big market watch off a steady trial. So, too, 4. Last Lalique improving into her second start over more ground for a leading Scone stable. Gap to the rest headed by 5. Be Sharp peaking third-up and 7. Epic Statement resuming behind two trials. How to play it: Considered to win. Race 3 6. Diva Rouge is a three-year-old filly by Red Henno on debut for the underrated Jake Hull stable at Gosford. Given two well-spaced trials, and there was plenty to like about the most recent when cruising through the line from off speed and wide out on the Beaumont course in a trial run on heavy going in relatively smart time, despite not racing truly. Drawn wide, but looks to have above average ability. Over the odds. 3. Hellwithasmile is a locally trained three-year-old by Zousain on debut for the same combination as the previous on top selection, and was impressive easily winning the second of two trials in heavy going. 2. Dartbrook resumes with no public trials and normally takes a run or two to hit his straps, but can finish hard over this trip if there's enough speed early in the race. 8. See You Then is a well-bred filly having her second start off a fair closing debut at Scone. Watch the betting on 4. Our Land, a first starter by Territories, drawn wide but the stable is a specialist sprinter producer.

France to hold new talks on New Caledonia future

PARIS: French President Emmanuel Macron plans to convene talks in June in a bid to break the deadlock over the future of France's Pacific territory of New Caledonia, where deadly separatist violence broke out last year, his office said Tuesday. The government will invite the different sides for talks in Paris 'in order to clarify economic, political and institutional issues with a view to reaching a shared agreement on the future of the archipelago,' Macron's office said. France has sought to ease tensions in nickel-rich New Caledonia following unrest that broke out in May 2024 that killed more than a dozen people and left billions of dollars in damage. Riots broke out over Paris's plan for voting reforms that indigenous Kanak people fear would leave them in a permanent minority, crushing their chances of winning independence. Three days of talks this May failed to bridge major differences between supporters and opponents of independence for the archipelago, which is home to around 270,000 people and located nearly 17,000 kilometres (10,600 miles) from Paris. The government has proposed a plan that would give a form of dual French and Caledonian nationality and transfer some government responsibilities that anti-separatist politicians say amounts to independence for New Caledonia. This month's talks were the latest in a series this year that have failed to convince the two sides. French Overseas Territories Minister Manuel Valls said on Sunday that despite the failures, 'the thread of dialogue is not broken'.
