More than 9,000 trees planted across Wrexham in project
The planting took place over the winter through a partnership between Wrexham Council and the Wrexham Forest Partnership, with the aim of enhancing woodland habitats and supporting green spaces for wildlife and residents. Councillor Terry Evans, Wrexham Council's lead member for environmental services, said: "I am proud that we have successfully planted these 9,000 trees in areas around the county borough. "Trees are at the heart of a thriving, resilient environment. "By investing in our woodlands, we're investing in healthier communities, richer habitats, and a greener future for Wrexham." Trees and woodlands offer a wide range of benefits, from improving air quality and reducing urban heat to supporting biodiversity and improving wellbeing. The scheme was funded by the Woodland Trust's Emergency Tree Fund, Trees for Cities, the Local Places for Nature scheme, and the Shared Prosperity Fund. Priority was given to areas with low tree canopy cover and poor tree equity scores to ensure the greatest impact. The newly planted trees form part of a long-term strategy to develop a more connected and sustainable woodland network across Wrexham. Woodlands are classed as a priority habitat in Wales, and expanding them is seen as an important step in addressing the climate and nature emergency. In addition to environmental benefits, the trees will provide food and shelter for birds, insects, and mammals, further supporting the region's ecosystem. The Wrexham Forest Partnership is encouraging residents to help care for the new trees. Volunteers are needed to support their growth, and both experienced gardeners and complete beginners are welcome. Anyone interested in volunteering can email woodlandpledge@ READ MORE: People urged to help save 'vital' community hospital after 'shock' closure Residents can also show their support by signing the Wrexham Woodland Pledge on the council's website. To celebrate the importance of trees and woodlands, Wrexham will host Woodland Connections Week from June 14 to 21. The event will include workshops, guided walks, and other activities designed to highlight the role trees play in shaping communities and supporting wildlife. Further details about the event will be announced in the coming months.

Cherry Creek Arts Festival celebrates 34 years of creativity, family, and craft in Denver
The 34th annual Cherry Creek Arts Festival returns to the streets of Cherry Creek North this July 4 to 6, bringing with it a vibrant mix of creativity, community, and craftsmanship to Denver. Featuring 260 juried artists from across the country, this year's festival promises an unforgettable lineup of fine art, live music, and local eats -- all with free admission. From textiles and woodwork to jewelry and repurposed materials, the festival celebrates a wide range of artistic mediums. For artist Terry Evans, it's more than just another show -- it's a tradition deeply rooted in growth and connection. "I applied the first year and got accepted," Evans recalls. "Now, more than 50 years into my career, I know I have more pieces in the Denver area than anywhere else." Originally from Kansas City, Terry has taken his art around the world -- but he always makes time for Cherry Creek. And so does his daughter, Leah Evans. She was just 8 weeks old when she attended her first art show with her dad. Today, she's exhibiting her own textile-based work using papier mâché and reclaimed materials. "I grew up sanding and oiling my dad's art," she said. "Now I've stitched a style all my own." Leah Evans, right, grew up helping her dad Terry Evans, left, with his art. The two were displaying both of their art at the 34th annual Cherry Creek Arts Festival in Denver on Saturday, July 5, 2025. CBS The father-daughter duo has returned to the festival many times over the years, side by side with hundreds of other artists who not only present their craft but share their passion and perseverance. "I'm watching a daughter who works really hard to make a living," Terry says. "And nothing's guaranteed."

Wrexham: Holt School to trial plans to make travel safer
Wrexham Council, in partnership with Sustrans Cymru and Letman Associates, will soon be launching a three-week trial at Holt Community Primary School. The trial will see timed traffic restrictions introduced to limit the number of vehicles driving and parking near the school at the start of the day, and at home-time. This will be the first 'School Streets' scheme in Wrexham, and it's being funded by the Welsh Government's Safe Routes in Communities fund. Councillor Terry Evans, Wrexham Council's Lead Member with responsibility for road safety, said: 'Over the past few months, we've been listening to pupils, parents and residents' about how we can improve the journey to school. 'Key concerns include speeding, inadequate pedestrian crossings, narrow pavements, poor visibility at junctions, and inconsiderate parking. 'The school is already working hard to reduce traffic at the gates by encouraging walking, scooting and cycling – so it's the perfect place to pilot a School Streets scheme.' MOST READ: Dad describes how joy turned to terror and panic at Liverpool victory parade Girl of the Year hopefuls strike a pose in photo look back Man who had 'large kitchen knife' in public among those sentenced in court Councillor Phil, Wynn, Lead Member for education added: 'We want to make the school gates a safer and healthier place for children, and if the pilot is a success, it could pave the way for similar trials at other primary schools in Wrexham. 'Over the past couple of years, School Streets have been introduced in other parts of the UK with some success. 'Traffic restrictions only come into effect during key times of the day, so any disruption to motorists is minimised, and the children are safer.' The exact dates of the trial in Holt are yet to be confirmed, but an Experimental Traffic Regulation Order will be published, and local residents, parents and pupils are being kept informed.

Newbridge Road contractors issue update on repairs
The B5605 road was subject to a landslip in 2021 during Storm Christoph, and has remained closed ever since, with January 25, 2025 marking the fourth anniversary of the closure. Its closure has proven a huge frustration for residents, and caused traffic "chaos" in Llangollen and surrounding areas when the A483 viaducts are closed during inclement weather. Earlier this year, Clwyd South MS Ken Skates published an update from Wrexham Council which detailed why work had been paused on site amid necessary permits and consents. Newbridge Road (Image: Newsquest) The local authority then issued a further update stating that there was set to be a large presence at the site and that the road will be open to traffic from spring/summer. Local councillor Terry Evans said that work was scheduled to be completed in May, however, an exact completion date was never confirmed. Towards the end of April, Jones Bros issued two updates on their Facebook page saying they were making "steady progress". MORE NEWS: A spokesperson for Jones Bros Contractors said: "We are making steady progress with installing the piled foundation wall at Newbridge. "The piles are 17m long each and will form the lower concrete wall that will eventually retain the new constructed slope and allow the road at the top to be reinstated. The walls scheduled for Newbridge Road. (Image: Jones Bros) "Thank you to all the local residents for their patience and understanding as we push on to complete this project. "The upper wall that will run along the footpath is currently being precast off site by our subcontractor in Ruthin and will be delivered to site in the coming months. Installation of the wall will commence once the fill material to the slope has been placed. We have sourced local materials for the cladding to match the existing aesthetics of the area." Wrexham Council were asked whether the repairs would be completed this month, they stated a further update would be published in the coming weeks.
