Protestors gather at Edinburgh Tesla dealership as calls made for boycott
Protestors have gathered outside the Tesla Centre in Edinburgh, calling for consumers to boycott the company. The action comes as part of a global movement "Tesla Takedown" which has seen protestors take to hundreds of Tesla sites around the world on Saturday, March 29. Edinburgh picketers joined other groups in London, Glasgow, Bristol, Berlin, and the United States in the "global day of action" against Tesla CEO Elon Musk. An online bulletin for the Edinburgh protest on Action Network reads: "Tesla Takedown is a peaceful protest movement. We oppose violence, vandalism and destruction of property. Bring a sign and wrap up warm! "Elon Musk is destroying democracy around the world, and he's using the fortune he built at Tesla to do it." It further calls consumers to sell their Teslas, get rid of their stock, and join picket lines. The action comes after the election of US President Donald Trump saw Elon Musk appointed to lead the newly-formed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). The advisory body aims to reduce federal spending in the US. In the weeks following President Trump's inauguration, thousands of government workers were laid off. Musk has also claimed on social media DOGE has "saved taxpayers over $1 billion in crazy DEI [diversity, equity and inclusion] contracts" and reduced funding to US foreign aid organisations, among other cuts. The protests also come after West Lothian Council raised questions over whether they should continue to use the social media site X, owned by Musk, amid changes to the platform's policies around fact-checking. Local Democracy Reporting Service reported Musk sparked controversy in the UK from his posts on X, stating: "In recent months he has made personal posts to millions of followers criticising the Labour Government over its response to the Southport killings and also taking aim at groups he had previously voiced support for, including the Reform party and its leader Nigel Farage." Tesla has been approached for comment. Join Edinburgh Live's Whatsapp Community here and get the latest news sent straight to your messages.
