Tesla sets foot in India with Rs 61 lakh Model Y

MUMBAI: Tesla is finally here. The electric car giant run by Elon Musk opened its first India showroom in Mumbai's BKC on Tuesday. Musk had set his eyes on India since at least 2015, but high tariffs, limited flexibility, and charging infrastructure challenges, kept Tesla away from the country, which the company had described as a hard market. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now While bookings opened on Tuesday, deliveries of Model Y SUVs, prices for which start at Rs 61-lakh on-road (500km range), will begin in Oct. A 'long-range' (622km) Model Y variant will be available from Jan 2026 with an on-road price tag of just over Rs 69 lakh. For context, BMW iX1 LWB electric SUV is priced at about Rs 51 lakh on-road, and Mercedes-Benz EQA electric SUV costs just over Rs 70 lakh. Users will have a simple 'plug and charge experience' with superchargers adding up to 267km range in 15 minutes. A wall-connected home charger (70km in 1 hour) will be provided with every car. "The Tesla Model Y, available in six colours, is a compact electric SUV with a spacious interior, ample boot space , and a minimalist design. It features a touchscreen interface, 'autopilot' driver-assistance, and over-the-air software updates for the car," a Tesla executive said at the launch. Model Y's features include a bumper camera that covers blind spots during rides. At present, Tesla EVs sold in India will be imported and have limited 'autopilot' features - automatic emergency braking system, lane departure warning and adaptive cruise control. Tesla's experience centre at BKC, where Apple opened its first store in 2023, is seen as a way to test the waters with its retail strategy - to evaluate consumer interest and market potential. Tesla is now preparing to expand its presence by opening a showroom in Delhi. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now It plans to expand to other cities as well. Sources said that in the past, there were reports of Tesla exploring plans for setting up a factory in India, but the talks stalled in 2023. Asked about plans to set up a manufacturing unit in the country this time, an executive at the new showroom declined to comment. Musk has consistently advocated for reduced duties to enhance affordability, the Indian govt maintains its stance on local manufacturing commitments. Tesla regional director Isabel Fan said, "It will all be 100% ownership and no franchisee for any showroom. Also, India has incredible talent and we are hiring local people. We have brought here Model Y - the best-selling vehicle in 2023-24."

Tesla's India rollout will initially focus on brand-building and demand assessment rather than full operational scale, the source added.

Tesla will open its first showroom in India on Tuesday and begin deliveries as early as next month, people familiar with the matter said, as the Elon Musk-led electric vehicle maker looks to tap potential demand in the third-largest automobile market to counter slowing sales elsewhere. The opening of the Mumbai showroom will mark the formal entry of Tesla into the market, giving prospective customers access to pricing, available variants, and trim options, according to one of the people, who asked not to be identified as the information is private, as well as documents seen by Bloomberg. Deliveries are expected to start from late Aug, a separate person familiar with the development said. Customers will be able to configure and order their Tesla EVs from next week, the person added. Bloomberg first reported last month that the Mumbai showroom was gearing up for a mid-July opening and the first set of cars — Model Y rear-wheel drive SUVs shipped from Tesla's China factory — had arrived in the country. A second Tesla showroom — this one in New Delhi — is poised to open in late July, the people said. Tesla's long-awaited entry into the Indian market comes at a crucial time for the EV maker, which saw a slump in global sales in the second quarter that ran counter to Musk's claim that business had recovered from blowback over his work in the Trump administration.

The Model Y is the world's top-selling electric car and its popularity in India will offer insight on consumers' acceptance of high import duties. Hefty tariffs had been a major factor weighing on Tesla's decision around when to enter the Indian market, CFO Vaibhav Taneja said during the automaker's first-quarter earnings call. Documents reviewed by Bloomberg last month show five Model Y units were declared at approximately Rs 27.7 lakh ($32,270) each. Taking into account India's 70% import tariff on fully-built imported cars under $40,000, plus additional surcharges, the cars are likely to sell at a substantial premium to the roughly $46,630 they go for in the US. 'Coming Soon': Tesla Likely To Begin First Deliveries In India From August

Last Updated: Tesla, owned by Elon Musk, will open its first showroom in India on July 15 in Mumbai's Maker Maxity building. Model Y SUV deliveries are expected to start by late August. Elon Musk-owned electric vehicle maker Tesla is set to open its first showroom in India on July 15 and is likely to begin deliveries as early as next month, according to people familiar with the matter, Bloomberg reported. Dubbed as an 'experience centre", the EV giant's first showroom will be opened in Mumbai on Tuesday. Once the Mumbai showroom, situated in the Maker Maxity building in the business and retail hub of Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) near Mumbai airport, opens its doors, visitors will be able to check prices and compare different models. Additionally, the customers will be able to configure and order their Tesla EVs from next week. The Mumbai showroom's first week will be reserved for VIPs and business partners, according to sources. The general public will be able to visit the following week. Tesla's first batch of cars for India, the Model Y SUVs, has already arrived from its China factory and the deliveries are expected to begin by the end of August, the report added. The Model Y, which is Tesla's top-selling electric car worldwide, will test how willing Indian buyers are to pay high prices. Taking into account India's 70% import tariff on fully-built imported cars under $40,000, plus additional surcharges, the cars are likely to sell at a substantial premium to the roughly $46,630 they go for in the US, the report added. As a part of its entry into the South Asian nation, the EV maker had stepped up hiring and in the past was scouting for showroom sites in Mumbai and New Delhi, Reuters earlier reported. As per the showroom registration papers, Tesla has signed a five-year lease from February 16, 2025, and will pay rent of about $446,000 (around Rs 38,872,030) for the first year for a 4,003 square feet (372 square meter) space, almost the size of a basketball court. The rent would likely be increased by five percent every year reaching about $542,000 for the fifth year, according to the registered lease document provided to the news agency by analytics firm CRE Matrix. After Mumbai, the US-based company is expected to open another India showroom in New Delhi (Aerocity) in late July. Tesla's long-awaited entry into the Indian market comes at a crucial time for the EV maker, which saw a slump in global sales in the second quarter that ran counter to Musk's claim that business had recovered from blowback over his work in the Trump administration. The US carmaker had been hunting for showroom space in India since late last year in order to start sales in the world's third biggest auto market, after putting market entry plans on hold in 2022. For years, Tesla faced hurdles related to localised factory investments, regulations, and high import taxes, factors which raised question marks over its arrival in the country. Earlier, US President Donald Trump had said if Tesla were to set up a factory in India to bypass the country's tariffs, it would be 'unfair" to the US.
