Impressive City Show Title Credentials with Juve Demolition

Manchester City produced an impressive display to thrash Juventus 5-2 and underline their title credentials at the Club World Cup on Thursday. The only team to advance into the last 16 with three victories, they showed intent and great finishing to top Group G, exposing Juve's defensive fragility in searing heat in Orlando. The game also saw Rodri make his first start for City since September, playing 67 minutes. By finishing top of their group, City will likely avoid a last-16 clash against Real Madrid, who will clinch Group H if they beat RB Salzburg later on Thursday. Juve will probably have to face the 15-times European champions, who are expected to welcome back France forward Kylian Mbappe following a bout of illness. Juventus coach Igor Tudor said: "They were better. Better team. They controlled. It was difficult to play. Then we wanted to change a little bit to the team. It was not easy to make pressing this way. They were much better." Juventus goalscorer Teun Koopmeiners said: "They had a lot of touches on the ball. First half, we stayed a little too low. When we recovered the ball it was quite difficult to come out. Second half, they were stronger than us and they scored a couple of goals. We need to learn from it." Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola said: "I liked the way we did it. It has been a long time since we had a performance like this on and off the ball. The players were committed and we are happy to beat a top side. "This is just one game, but I think the players felt again what it was like to be a good team. The belief always comes from your performances, not your past." On Rodri's return to the starting lineup, Guardiola said: "We have missed him a lot. He knows exactly what he has to do with the ball, and his personality. I didn't expect him to play as many minutes. He will be ready for the next one."

Update: Date: 22:21 BST Title: Post Content: FT: Juventus 2-5 Man City Erling Haaland is on 33 goals for 2024-25... or two goals for 2025-26, depending how you look at it. Not really seeing a load of uniformity for how we're counting it. Almost feels like a standalone thing to me. Update: Date: 22:19 BST Title: Post Content: FT: Juventus 2-5 Man City That was five goals in the last six games for Erling Haaland today. Update: Date: 22:16 BST Title: 'The best performance in this tournament' Content: FT: Juventus 2-5 Man City Manchester City Manchester City captain Bernardo Silva, speaking to Dazn: "Very good. I think we are very happy with what we did today. Against a top team we managed to control the game to keep the ball. "Apart from little mistakes we made individually, probably the best performance we had in this tournament. We qualified first in the group and we're very happy. "Well, it is another win. An important win, so it makes us qualify first. I don't know if it is a statement win or not. We're happy to have qualified for the last 16. We are in this tournament to win. We are one step closer to that goal. "It is good, but it doesn't count much now. It is kill or be killed. We have to be ready for this next stage of important games. Update: Date: 22:12 BST Title: Post Content: FT: Juventus 2-5 Man City Callum WilsonNewcastle striker speaking on Dazn I think it shows how good Man City are as a squad. They have strength in depth. They have probably played this tournament with two teams. I feel Man City are coming back again. It was five, but it could have been more. Update: Date: 22:09 BST Title: 'One-sided' Content: FT: Juventus 2-5 Man City Callum WilsonNewcastle striker speaking on Dazn It was pure dominance. Before the game we probably didn't anticipate that was the way the game was going to go. They treated us to some fantastic goals on the night. The pass completed stat says it all, and shows how one-sided it was. Update: Date: 22:07 BST Title: Post Content: FT: Juventus 2-5 Man City Andros TownsendFormer Tottenham midfielder on Dazn On Pep Guardiola's selection options... It is going to be tough because Omar Marmoush played well in the first half. Erling Haaland comes on and makes a massive difference. You have got Rayan Cherki on the bench today, Savinho played well, Foden on the bench. Jeremy Doku on the left has so much talent in those forward areas. It is going to be tough picking a starting 11 here on out. Update: Date: 22:05 BST Title: Post Content: FT: Juventus 2-5 Man City Andros TownsendFormer Tottenham midfielder on Dazn I think Juve have not shown us what they can really do today. Update: Date: 22:04 BST Title: Post Content: FT: Juventus 2-5 Man City City had 24 shots to Juventus' four - so the scoreline is a fair one. I think they have all settled in very well in their own way. Rayan Aït-Nouri on that left-hand-side has combined well with Jeremy Doku today. Tijjani Reijnders, whether he has played as a six or further forward, he has been impressive in both roles. Rayan Cherki's performances off the bench on the right-hand-side has given Man City a new lease of life - all three of them.

Ederson makes HOWLER for Man City during Club World Cup clash with Juventus - gifting Teun Koopmeiners a simple equaliser on the same day he commits his future to the club

A howler from goalkeeper Ederson cost Manchester City the lead during their Club World Cup group stage game against Juventus. On the same day that the Brazilian took to social media to quash rumours of his impending departure, City's long-tenured goalkeeper had a moment to forget. Just over 10 minutes into the match in Orlando, Ederson's pass while trying to play out from the back was intercepted on the edge of the box by midfielder Teun Koopmeiners. The Dutchman then made City pay, coasting into the area before firing past Ederson to equalise for the Serie A club. Earlier on Thursday, Ederson said that 'his future is here' in response to reports linking him with a move to Saudi Arabia. 'My friends sent me some videos,' he said. '99% is fake news.' Manchester City were looking to end the group stages on a high after already beating Wydad AC and Al Ain at the Club World Cup. Early in their clash with Juventus, they took the lead through winger Jeremy Doku.
