AM Khan appointed as new VC of Karnatak University
Dharwad: After almost nine months, the Karnatak University, state's second oldest university, has a permanent vice-chancellor. Governor Thaawar Chand Gehlot, who is also the Chancellor of the state varsities, has appointed Prof Airani Mohammad Khan as the new vice-chancellor of KU. According to the order issued on Saturday, the Governor stated that Prof A M Khan has been appointed after his name was shortlisted by the search committee. He will be holding the office for a period of four years or until he attains the age of 67, whichever is earlier. Before being appointed as the vice-chancellor, Prof Khan was serving at Department of Studies and Research in Electronics at Mangalore University. Biomedical image processing, embedded system design, image/ data processing, algorithm development, IC fabrication technology, computer networks have been his research areas. Prof Khan is likely to take charge on July 7 (Monday). There was a growing demand from the faculty and students to appoint a regular vice-chancellor after Prof KB Gudasi attained superannuation in Sept, as administrative work was getting affected. However, the govt appointed three acting vice-chancellor to look into the administrative affairs of the KU. Prof Vijaya Korishetti new VC of Akkamahadevi Women's University Vijayapura: Professor Vijaya Korishetti, head of the department of sociology , and senior faculty member, Karnataka State Akkamahadevi Women's University has been appointed as the sixth Vice-Chancellor of the same University. The order was issued on Thursday by Governor Thaawar Chand Gehlot who is also the chancellor of state universities. Until now, Professors from other Universities had been appointed vice-chancellors of Akkamahadevi varsity. For the first time, a faculty member from Akkamahadevi Women's University itself has been appointed to the post. Prof Vijaya will serve as the vice-chancellor for the next four years.

Governor advises youth to improve skills for better career opportunities
Mysuru: Karnataka governor Thaawar Chand Gehlot, on Saturday, advised the youth to improve their skills for better career opportunities. Speaking after inaugurating 'The Centre for Future Skills' at Karnataka State Open University (KSOU), he said, "Skill education is a fundamental requirement for India's overall development and self-reliance. The dream of 'Skilled India, Empowered India' will come true only when every youth is equipped with practical skills along with knowledge," he stated. He highlighted that in the current competitive environment, providing technical, social, and professional skills to the youth, contributes to the national strength. Additionally, skill education enables social and economic advancement for rural, backward, and underprivileged sections. The governor noted that 65% of India's population is under 35 years of age. Proper training of this demographic could strengthen India globally across economic, social, and technological domains. He defined skill as the ability to accomplish tasks effectively, developed through knowledge, experience, and practice. The lift in which the governor was travelling reached the second floor, instead of stopping at the first floor. Later, the governor walked to the stage. KSOU VC Sharanappa V Halse said the incident occurred due to the overload.

With guv returning it for 2nd time, Karnataka mulls sending Muslim quota bill to President BENGALURU: Karnataka's Congress government is considering sending to the President a bill that proposes reservation for Muslims in civil contracts after governor Thaawar Chand Gehlot returned it a second time, insisting it be forwarded to President Droupadi Murmu. Karnataka Transparency in Public Procurement (Amendment) Bill, 2025, provides for 4% reservation to Muslims in civil contracts up to Rs 1 crore, besides quotas for SCs, STs and OBCs (Category I and II-A) in government tenders for goods and services. It was passed by the state legislature in March. Law and parliamentary affairs minister HK Patil had planned to meet senior officials and legal experts Thursday to decide the next course of action, but that meeting was postponed. Senior officials said the government had considered challenging Gehlot's decision in court. However, constitutional experts reportedly advised against legal action, urging the government to pursue alternative routes instead. The issue is likely to be informally discussed during a meeting that CM Siddaramaiah is scheduled to chair on Friday. Will cabinet take a call on caste census, Greater Bengaluru Authority?
Bengaluru: The cabinet meeting scheduled for Friday has garnered significant political interest since ministers are set to deliberate on the contentious socio-economic and educational survey, widely referred to as the state caste census .Besides, they are also expected to discuss the govt's proposal to set up a special task force to prevent communal flare-ups in the coastal districts, a decision that comes in the wake of the murder of pro-Hindu activist and rowdy sheeter Suhas Shetty. It coincides with a BJP delegation meeting governor Thaawar Chand Gehlot, seeking his intervention in "restoring" law and order in these districts and action against assembly speaker UT Khader for "controversial" remarks about the murder case."The govt's proposal of a special force is aimed at protecting anti-social elements who are on a spree killing pro-Hindu activists," said N Ravikumar, BJP chief whip in the legislative council. "The speaker's remarks supporting the suspected murderer's family is evidence of this. "The report is lopsided," said B Kenchappa Gowda, Vokkaligara Sangha president. "It shows the population of certain communities have increased by a staggering 74% to 1400%, while the population of Vokkaligas, Lingayats, Brahmins, Vaisyas and others have been undercounted. This is unacceptable."So far, Siddaramaiah has remained firm and has even suggested that he will base the next state budget on the census report. The census cost the state exchequer Rs 162 crore.

How Bengaluru's civic management hit the change button
Eighteen years after it was created to cater to a burgeoning city, Bengaluru's municipal body, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), will now make way for a new system of civic governance in India's tech capital. This transition phase formally commenced on April 24 when the Greater Bengaluru Governance (GBG) Act, 2024 was legislation, passed in March and receiving governor Thaawar Chand Gehlot's assent on April 23, aims to transform the system of governance in Bengaluru by splitting the BBMP into smaller municipal corporations, which would be part of a Greater Bengaluru Authority responsible for city GBG Act was brought in with the objective of decentralising the civic apparatus and to achieve greater coordination among several parastatal agencies that provide various civic amenities in the move had met with some criticism from Opposition parties and civic groups, which argue that it concentrates power with the state government and thereby undermines the 74th Constitutional Amendment's provisions for local self-government. Instead, they recommend strengthening the BBMP and devolving powers that will allow it to function more effectively.
