World Brain Day 2025: Experts Say Mental Health In Workplace Is Important, "Stress Is Not A Badge Of Honour"

World Brain Day is observed annually on July 22 to raise awareness about brain health. The theme for World Brain Day 2025 is "Brain Health for All Ages" to emphasise the importance of maintaining brain health throughout one's life, from birth to old age. The day has also given an opportunity to talk about mental health in the workplace. "With the work and hustle culture, mental health can no longer be neglected or ignored," Dr Maitri Thakker, clinical psychologist, told NDTV. "It calls for attention, awareness, responsibility and care." "We need to understand that stress is not a badge of honour, for chronic stress leads to burnout, sleep difficulties, irritability and other health complications as well," Dr Thakker added. She added that if stress is left unacknowledged or unaddressed, it spills over into our relationships and plummets self-esteem. Importance Of Mental Health In The Workplace Mental health in the workplace has become a crucial aspect of employee well-being and productivity. It addresses how individuals manage stress and make decisions in their roles. From tight deadlines to blurred work-life boundaries, the modern workplace can very easily become both: a source of purpose and a space of long-term stress and tension. Dr Thakker said that we show up to work every day with not only our abilities but also our anxieties and stress, and also our coping mechanisms, which are both healthy and unhealthy. Employees who manage their mental health effectively are more focused and efficient. Addressing such issues can lead to lower absenteeism rates, as it is expected that employees will take less time off due to stress or illness. Dr Thakker stated that a workplace that promotes mental health fosters positive relationships, reduces conflicts and creates a more collaborative culture. Such workplaces also have lower turnover rates because employees feel valued and don't seek employment in other companies. Depression, anxiety and burnout are some of the common mental health issues in the workplace. Here are some simple tips to implement changes: Mental health check-ins: Employees can start conversations about how people are actually doing. Change at senior level: If the change happens at the top level, employees would feel like they also have a space to express. Draw boundaries: Avoid after-work hours communication, celebrate the small wins, reward outcomes rather than rewarding overworking. Take Care Of Your Brain Dr Deep Das, a neurologist at CMRI Kolkata, told NDTV, "The brain is the only organ that defines who we are-our thoughts, memories, and choices. It can't be replaced, transplanted, or rebooted." "While AI can mimic intelligence, it cannot replicate the human mind's empathy, imagination, or resilience. On World Brain Day, let's remember: brain health is not just for the elderly-it's for every age." "These simple habits today can shield you from stroke, dementia, and even depression tomorrow," Dr Das said.

Video: Mumbai Hotelier Caught Smoking Hookah In SUV Despite Statewide Ban

The video has raised questions about how such an act could take place near such a high-security zone. In a blatant violation of Maharashtra's hookah ban, a video has surfaced showing the owner of a prominent Mumbai hotel, Muhammad Thakker, smoking hookah inside a luxury SUV just outside Mantralaya, the state's administrative headquarters. The footage, shared on Instagram by Bandhu News on Thursday, quickly went viral and sparked widespread public outrage. In the video, Thakker can be seen smoking a hookah while driving a Range Rover, raising serious concerns over both legal and safety violations. Caught on Camera Muhammad Thakker is the owner of Faham Lounge, a popular hotel located in Mumbai's Masjid area. In the video, Thakker casually smokes hookah while driving from the Mantralaya signal towards the Air India building. A staff member, wearing a T-shirt with the Faham Lounge branding, is also seen sitting in the back seat. Thakker even invites others to join him, saying, 'If anyone wants to smoke hookah, they can come sit in my car." He claims the hookah is 'herbal," but all forms of hookah use in public are banned under state rules, regardless of contents. Public Reaction And Legal Concerns The video has raised questions about how such an act could take place near such a high-security zone. Many citizens are now demanding action from the police. So far, the Mumbai Police has not made any official statement. Thakker also claims to run other food and hookah businesses internationally, including in Dubai. At his Mumbai outlet, herbal hookah is reportedly served. However, reports say that many parlours in the city offer nicotine-laced hookah under the guise of herbal flavours, especially to youngsters. CM Fadnavis Vows Strict Action This incident comes just months after Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis warned of strict action against illegal hookah parlours. On March 25, he said in the state assembly that licenses of such restaurants would be cancelled. He also said police officers in the area would be held accountable if lawbreaking is exposed by citizens or the media instead of law enforcement. Despite the clear order, this bold violation has sparked concern about law enforcement and the growing disregard for public safety norms. India needs $1.5 trillion to meet 2030 climate and energy goals: Deloitte

New Delhi: India will require around $1.5 trillion in investments by 2030 to tackle climate change and accelerate its energy transition, according to a new report by Deloitte. The report, titled The Climate Response: Tapping into India's Climate and Energy Transition Opportunity, highlights the scale of capital needed across renewable energy, biofuels, decarbonisation efforts, and sustainable infrastructure to meet the country's climate goals. To reach the government's target of 500 GW of non-fossil capacity by 2030, Deloitte estimates a required investment of $200–250 billion, spanning areas such as advanced manufacturing, grid integration, and system expansion. As of now, India's total non-fossil fuel capacity stands at 242.8 GW, accounting for about half of the country's total installed capacity of 484.8 GW. This includes 184.62 GW of renewable power, 49.38 GW from large hydro projects, and 8.78 GW of nuclear energy. The report also notes that expanding India's renewable energy capacity must be accompanied by a significant scale-up in energy storage infrastructure—by nearly eight times—which would require an estimated $250–300 billion in capital expenditure by FY30. Mandates on ethanol blending, sustainable aviation fuel, and the adoption of green hydrogen are expected to drive additional investments of $75–80 billion in biofuels and $90–100 billion in green hydrogen, Deloitte said. 'This investment will reduce emissions, boost job creation, enhance energy security and protect vulnerable communities from climate risks. Financial instruments, such as green bonds, climate funds and blended finance models, are important in mobilising capital for sustainability initiatives,' said Viral Thakker, partner and sustainability and climate leader, Deloitte South Asia. He added that unlocking investment at scale and ensuring equitable access to climate finance would help build long-term resilience in India's most climate-sensitive sectors. 'By strategically harnessing climate finance, India can accelerate its decarbonisation efforts, offering immense investment potential in sectors poised for sustainable growth and innovation,' Thakker said. Prashanth Nutula, partner, Deloitte India, said, 'To accelerate its climate journey, India must further strengthen its commitment to integrating renewable energy, biofuels and advanced technologies into a cohesive, sustainable energy ecosystem. This must be supported by investments in energy storage, infrastructure and grid reliability while prioritising inclusive growth." He also emphasised the need to focus on climate-vulnerable sectors beyond energy. "A comprehensive strategy that aligns infrastructure, waste management and digital transformation will be crucial in creating resilient, future-ready communities and positioning India as a true pioneer in sustainable development,' Nutula added.

AI-efficient and flush with capital: 2025 startups and a VC's advice to founders

Battery Ventures general partner Dharmesh Thakker has some advice for first time founders: raising capital does not necessarily equate to success. After over a decade of investing in early and growth stage cloud and big data startups, Thakker sees some companies 'AI-washing,' and many taking on more funding than they need to succeed, thanks to an abundance of capital in the ecosystem. In an extended interview with CNBC's Kate Rooney, Thakker maps out the possible exits awaiting startups in 2025, including private equity buyouts, public listings, and big tech acquisitions–if they survive. He's deployed capital into the Indian and Israeli startup ecosystems, and he weighs in on the global trade environment's impact on funding flows.
