Lawmaker urges gov't to probe MTR disruption after Friday morning rush-hour delay on Tseung Kwan O line

A Hong Kong lawmaker has urged the government to probe an MTR disruption on the Tseung Kwan O line, following train delays lasting three hours during rush hour on Friday morning. Legislator Stanley Li said the incident caused major inconvenience to residents in Tseung Kwan O, who rely on the MTR to commute out of the district, as they were leaving for work. He said Friday morning's malfunction came after a similar disruption in May, also on the Tseung Kwan O line. A power failure on May 22 caused train services to halt completely for more than three hours during the evening rush hour period. 'I believe it is not acceptable to Hong Kong residents that these incidents are happening one after another,' said Li, a lawmaker from the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong (DAB). In a media statement, the MTR Corporation (MTRC) said signalling equipment malfunctioned near the North Point MTR stop along the Tseung Kwan O line at around 7.20am on Friday. Trains ran at reduced speeds, causing journey times from North Point MTR Station to Po Lam and LOHAS Park stations to increase by five to eight minutes. Photos on social media showed crowded train platforms and a line of people extending into PopCorn mall, a shopping centre connected to Tseung Kwan O MTR station. Normal service resumed at close to 10.30am. Lawmaker Michael Tien attributed signalling malfunctions to analogue systems still used by some train lines. He said the MTRC was upgrading the systems for the city's older train lines – the Island, Kwun Tong, Tsuen Wan, and Tseung Kwan O lines – but the Tseung Kwan O line's upgrades would take place last, only to be completed in 2029 or 2030. In May, train service on the Tseung Kwan O line was interrupted for around five hours starting during the evening rush hour. For the first three hours, service was completely halted on the line before gradually resuming between some stops. The MTRC was fined HK$19.2 million over the delay as part of a mechanism that forces it to pay for service failures longer than 31 minutes. The money is refunded to passengers through a fare promotion. When fines accumulate to HK$25 million, the MTR Corporation offers a 'Thank You Day' during which commuters pay only half-price fares. The last 'Thank You Day' was held on Sunday.

Renfrewshire sepsis survivor pens heartfelt open letter to NHS heroes

Heroic Corrine Hutton's care journey has included surviving sepsis in 2013 and undergoing a double hand transplant in 2019. A quadruple amputee has issued a powerful thank you letter to the NHS 12 years after doctors not only saved her life but 'helped her live it joyfully'. Dr Corrine Hutton MBE, best known as Cor, is the founder of Paisley amputee charity Finding Your Feet and she has released an emotional open letter thanking the NHS for over a decade of life-saving support. ‌ Her care journey has included surviving sepsis in 2013 and undergoing a double hand transplant in 2019. ‌ The letter marks twelve years since Cor was given just a five per cent chance of survival after contracting sepsis. It reflects on the care she's received through multiple surgeries, kidney complications, lung loss, and transplant recovery ‚ and the people behind it all. Timed to coincide with Thank You Day on Sunday, July 7, the letter is a deeply personal expression of gratitude from Cor, one of the UK's most recognised advocates for people affected by amputation or limb absence. In the open letter to the NHS, the Lochwinnoch mum says: 'The NHS didn't just save my life. You helped me live it — fully, joyfully, and on my own terms. 'I know the NHS isn't perfect but I also know how hard your job is. I've seen it. I've felt it. The pressure. The repetition. The emotional weight of showing up for people who are scared, angry or broken and still doing it with compassion. Every time I thought I'd reached the end, you gave me another beginning.' Since her first operation in 2013, Cor has made it her mission to help amputees and has played her part in Renfrewshire. Her Finding Your Feet charity has been a lifeline for people across Scotland, offering compassion at what is often the loneliest and most frightening time for amputees. Her tireless fundraising, including some incredible physical challenges, means the charity has endured throughout a global pandemic and cost-of-living crisis. Cor's letter is also accompanied by a series of short videos and an invitation to the public to share their own messages of thanks to anyone who's made a difference using the hashtag #WithAllMyHeart. ‌ And on why she wrote the letter, the Renfrewshire hero went on to say: 'I think what made me want to write the letter is that the NHS gets a bit of stick. 'I know they're under a lot of pressure. But the service I've had, the care that I've had from the NHS has just been absolutely stunning, right from when I had my sepsis, onto the effects of the sepsis, my amputations, the nursing staff, the consultants that I've had, absolutely brilliant. So, so many people [were] going out their way [to help]. I'm talking about the junior medical staff that washed my hair and stuck a lipstick on me when I needed it, and the senior consultants that are there to answer a question for me, and they're still caring for me. 'I just want to tell the NHS that I'm grateful. I want to say thank you to each and every one of them that's helped me over the years, no matter what your position. 'I couldn't have done it without you. I just honestly wouldn't be here without the NHS. Thank you.'

MTR will offer half-price rides for one day next month

Citizens and tourists alike will have a great reason to go out and about, as Hong Kong's railway operator MTR Corporation is offering half-price rides for one day next month. Mark your calendars: on Sunday, July 13, all MTR passengers can enjoy 50 percent off their fares for the day. Travellers can enjoy this discount on the MTR, the light rail, the MTR bus service, as well as cross-border trips that run to and from Lo Wu and Lok Ma Chau stations. The discount is applicable to passengers who tap in using Octopus cards or QR code tickets. This 'Thank You Day' is in response to the significant disruption that occurred on May 22, where a 'power supply disruption' resulted in the entirety of the Tseung Kwan O line being shut down for over five hours during the evening peak rush. In addition to the half-price rides on July 13, MTR is also offering a free ride to passengers who were affected by the Tseung Kwan O line – those who have entered or exited stations along that rail line between May 18 and June 15 with their Octopus cards are entitled to one free MTR ride. In order to claim this complimentary ride, passengers need to register on the MTR mobile app by June 15, and will then receive the free ride by June 20. To ensure this initiative runs smoothly, service counters will be available at North Point, Hang Hau, Tseung Kwan O, and Tiu Keng Leng stations from 3pm to 8pm on June 6 to 8 and June 13 to 15. MTR staff will be on hand to assist in app registration and linking Octopus cards where needed. This form of recompense was introduced with MTR's revised service performance rebate policy, which dictates that the railway operator has to offer half-fare compensation when costs from disrupted services exceed $25 million. MTR has allocated $19.2 million in reimbursement to affected Hongkongers, which will fund July's discounted rides.
