Phillies Would Land $7.8 Million Breakout Slugger In 'Realistic' Trade Scenario

The Philadelphia Phillies are one of the best teams in baseball again this season, but they still need to pull off a few big trades in order to cement themselves at the top of the National League. One place the Phillies need to upgrade is the outfield. They've been rumored to be interested in Luis Robert Jr., but that trade doesn't seem too likely at this point. The Phillies will likely turn to a few less talked about options. Thomas Erbe of That Ball's Outta Here recently suggested the Phillies could pull off a "realistic" trade with the Los Angeles Angels to acquire slugging outfielder Taylor Ward. ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA - JULY 10: Taylor Ward #3 of the Los Angeles Angels celebrates after hitting a home run during the fifth inning against the Texas Rangers at Angel Stadium of Anaheim on July 10,... ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA - JULY 10: Taylor Ward #3 of the Los Angeles Angels celebrates after hitting a home run during the fifth inning against the Texas Rangers at Angel Stadium of Anaheim on July 10, 2025 in Anaheim, California. More"Ward has already blasted a team-leading 20 home runs before the All-Star break. Statistically speaking, he's also even more dangerous outside of Angel Stadium than he is hitting inside his home park," Erbe wrote. "There are only a small handful of ballparks further away from Los Angeles than Philadelphia. "Ward's power can spray all over the park, and the Phillies have a desperate need for power from the right side of the plate. If his dramatic increase in OPS can translate to hitting at Citizens Bank Park for half of the season's remaining at-bats, the Phillies could snag an absolute steal at the deadline and catapult their way to the top of the National League when it's all said and done. To sweeten the deal, this is more than just a rental. Ward is under team control through the 2026 season." Ward would be the perfect addition for the Phillies. The slugger is in the middle of a career year in Los Angeles, and he would come with just enough team control to make it worth it for Philadelphia. While the Angels might not be too excited to sell this season, the Phillies could put together a solid trade package to poach the star from the Angels. Adding Ward to a lineup with Bryce Harper, Trea Turner, Kyle Schwarber, and multiple other stars would be dangerous for the league. MLB Writer Suggests 'Realistic' Phillies Trade For $6 Million Gold Glover

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The Philadelphia Phillies are one of the best teams in baseball behind a loaded cast of stars. But they still need to add more talent to separate themselves in the loaded National League. Teams like the Chicago Cubs, New York Mets, and Los Angeles Dodgers are up there with the Phillies. But if Philadelphia can swing a few trades, it could place itself in a position for the No. 1 seed in the NL. Thomas Erbe of That Ball's Outta Here recently suggested the Phillies could swing a "realistic" trade with the Minnesota Twins to acquire Gold Glove outfielder Harrison Bader. MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA - JULY 10: Harrison Bader #12 of the Minnesota Twins takes an at-bat against the Chicago Cubs in the third inning at Target Field on July 10, 2025 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Cubs... MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA - JULY 10: Harrison Bader #12 of the Minnesota Twins takes an at-bat against the Chicago Cubs in the third inning at Target Field on July 10, 2025 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Cubs defeated the Twins 8-1. More"Though he is not having a terrible season by any means, Harrison Bader has a mutual option for $10 million at the end of the 2025 season," Erbe wrote. "It's hard to believe the Twins would be on board picking up their side of the option. Instead of holding onto him in what is looking likely to be a lost season, a trade out of Minnesota at the deadline seems most appropriate for Bader. "The Phillies need help in center field, and Bader can give them what they need. His defense is among the top of the list in baseball, and he can still be dangerous at the plate. Plus, he's still a threat on the bases at age 31. If all those click after a move to Philadelphia, it can go down as one of the better moves at the deadline." A trade for Bader would be rather cheap. He's not a star at this point in his career, but he's a good baserunner and a great fielder. At worst, it would be a lateral move for the Phillies. At best, Bader finds his stride at the plate and brings an elite glove to the City of Brotherly Love. The Phillies could take this risk in the coming weeks. They're likely going to be aggressive in the relief pitcher market, so acquiring an affordable outfielder like Bader makes plenty of sense. Orioles $8.7 Million All-Star Might Be Perfect Phillies Trade Target

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Philadelphia Phillies needed to add an outfielder before the trade deadline last season and didn't adequately address the issue. A year later, they have the same issue. Philadelphia needs an outfielder ahead of the trade deadline, and there aren't many high-quality options on the market. There's a good chance the Phillies will look for an affordable player to trade for in the coming weeks. Thomas Erbe of That Ball's Outta Here recently suggested the Phillies could find their outfielder in a deal with the Baltimore Orioles for expiring slugger Cedric Mullins. BALTIMORE, MD - JULY 11: Gunnar Henderson #2 and Cedric Mullins #31 of the Baltimore Orioles celebrate a win after a baseball game against the Miami Marlins at Oriole Park at Camden Yards on July... BALTIMORE, MD - JULY 11: Gunnar Henderson #2 and Cedric Mullins #31 of the Baltimore Orioles celebrate a win after a baseball game against the Miami Marlins at Oriole Park at Camden Yards on July 11, 2025 in Baltimore, Maryland. More"In 2024, the Phillies were rumored to be talking to the Baltimore Orioles about trading for Cedric Mullins at the deadline," Erbe wrote. "Instead, it was Austin Hays who moved from Baltimore to Philadelphia. Now, with the Orioles close to being out of the race, it is believed Mullins will actually be on the move. "Perhaps a change in scenery would do Mullins some good. Competing for a contending team might help boost his offensive production, too. This is a move the Phillies could make that could upgrade their production in center field. On the other side, the Orioles could obtain something for Mullins before he potentially walks in free agency anyway." Mullins isn't the kind of name that Phillies fans are likely wanting to hear as the team's trade target. But with the level of outfielders on the market, Mullins might be the name that makes the most sense. If the Phillies don't want to trade away any top prospects, this kind of deal with the Orioles makes the most sense. With Mullins on an expiring contract, his value isn't as high as it's been in the past. Philadelphia could likely land him in exchange for one or two mid-tier prospects. Phillies Involved In Trade Buzz Surrounding $4.1 Million Pitcher

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Philadelphia Phillies desperately need to add a closer ahead of the trade deadline. It's clearly their biggest need this season. With Jose Alvarado out for the postseason because of his ongoing PED suspension, Philadelphia needs to swing a massive move to add another arm or two. Luckily for them, there are a lot of high-leverage options expected to be on the trade block. Michael Hennelly of That Ball's Outta Here recently suggested the Phillies could look to swing a trade for Minnesota Twins closer Jhoan Duran ahead of the trade deadline. ATLANTA, GEORGIA - APRIL 08: A detailed view of the hat and glove of Bryson Stott #5 of the Philadelphia Phillies in the seventh inning against the Atlanta Braves at Truist Park on April 08,... ATLANTA, GEORGIA - APRIL 08: A detailed view of the hat and glove of Bryson Stott #5 of the Philadelphia Phillies in the seventh inning against the Atlanta Braves at Truist Park on April 08, 2025 in Atlanta, Georgia. More Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images "After losing nine of the last 10 games, including three straight losses, the Twins could be in a position to be sellers as the trade deadline nears," Hennelly wrote. "Like the Guardians, the Twins feature a dominant closer who should draw plenty of interest from reliever-needy teams. "Jhoan Duran has recorded 68 saves throughout his first four seasons in the majors and is enjoying a career year in 2025. The right-hander owns a career-low 1.57 ERA and has 10 saves in 12 opportunities. Like Clase, Duran comes with club control, and he won't be a free agent until 2028. He may not garner as much trade value as Clase, but Duran will require a hefty package if the Twins decide to trade their closer." If the Phillies are willing to headline a trade package with prospect Mick Abel, the Twins would likely be open to trading their closer. Since Duran has a few years of team control on his deal, he's going to be a lot harder to trade for than somebody like Aroldis Chapman or Ryan Helsley. But with Duran's talent, this kind of deal would be very worth it for the Phillies. If they can find a way to steal him from the Twins, it would be the best-case scenario for Philadelphia. Cardinals $44 Million Pitcher Listed As Trade Fit For Phillies

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Philadelphia Phillies have been without their closer, Jose Alvarado, for a few weeks after the lefty was hit with a PED suspension. Alvarado will also miss the postseason. With that in mind, the Phillies desperately need to look for left-handed relievers on the trade block this season as the postseason void left by Alvarado will be very clear in October. Michael Hennelly of That Ball's Outta Here recently listed Steven Matz of the St. Louis Cardinals as a potential trade chip for the Phillies to pursue. DETROIT, MICHIGAN - JUNE 26: A detail of the Philadelphia Phillies logo on a uniform against the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park on June 26, 2024 in Detroit, Michigan. DETROIT, MICHIGAN - JUNE 26: A detail of the Philadelphia Phillies logo on a uniform against the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park on June 26, 2024 in Detroit, Michigan."Matz signed with the St. Louis Cardinals before the 2022 season and was used as a swingman throughout his first three years with the team. The 34-year-old has primarily been used out of the bullpen in 2025, appearing in 22 games with just two starts," Hennelly wrote. "Matz owns a 3.78 ERA with three holds and one save in 33 1/3 innings as a reliever this season. The veteran primarily works in the sixth and seventh innings for the Cardinals. "The Cardinals are 4.5 games out of first place in the NL Central and one game out of a Wild Card spot. If they fall out of the playoff picture as the deadline nears, the Cardinals could look to trade Matz, who's in the final year of a four-year, $44 million contract." Matz could be the perfect trade target for the Phillies. When Alvarado is out, he could fill in as a valuable left-handed reliever, though he won't be the caliber of pitcher needed to close games. However, the Phillies could swing another trade for a high-leverage arm besides Matz. If they can pull off trades for two relievers, with one of them being Matz, the Phillies will be in a great spot by the trade deadline.
