'The Apothecary Diaries' Maomao tops Anime Grand Prix as 2025's best character
Maomao from The Apothecary Diaries has been named Best Anime Character of 2025 at the 47th Anime Grand Prix Awards, surpassing Solo Leveling's Jinwoo, who had dominated the Crunchyroll Awards earlier this year. Solo Leveling has achieved widespread international popularity, with its fast-paced storytelling and high-intensity battles contributing to its success. It was awarded Anime of the Year at the Crunchyroll Awards, and its protagonist, Jinwoo, received Best Main Character at the same ceremony. However, in Japan, Solo Leveling's reach is more modest, and this was reflected in the Grand Prix results. The Anime Grand Prix Awards, organised by the magazine Animage, are decided by the votes of its readers and are highly regarded within the Japanese anime community. This year, Maomao, the lead character of The Apothecary Diaries, secured the top position. Her role across the first two seasons of the series has been praised for her distinctive characterisation and development, setting her apart in a competitive field. The Apothecary Diaries has steadily gained recognition beyond Japan, with many viewers now anticipating its third season. As The Apothecary Diaries moves towards its next season, Maomao's win may further boost the series' profile internationally, while Solo Leveling continues to maintain its strong global fanbase.

One-Punch Man season 3: release date, new trailer, and everything we know so far
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. One-Punch Man season 3 is heading to our screens in a few months, and we can't wait to reunite with Saitama and his deadly fists. Here we gather the latest news about the upcoming season, including the recent announcement that the leading manga and anime platform Viz Media has acquired the rights across North America. For now, we've gathered everything you need to know about the One-Punch Man season 3 release date, plot details, first-look images and more. The return of the beloved satirical superhero anime joins a long list of exciting new anime series this year, like The Apothecary Diaries season 2, Dan Da Dan, and Sakamoto Days. After a six-year hiatus, One-Punch Man is finally coming back with new episodes, as the series adapts the Monster Association arc. We have so many juicy details about what's in store for the show, including some new villain reveals that may at least make our main hero sweat a bit this time. Below, we've compiled all the information available right now about One-Punch Man season 3, including a look at the manga chapters it could adapt in the upcoming season, a confirmed cast list, and even where to watch the (literal) hard-hitting adventures of Saitama. For more from the world of anime, check out our collection of the best anime you should be watching right now, plus the latest on Jujutsu Kaisen season 3, My Hero Academia season 8, and the Demon Slayer Infinity Castle movie trilogy. One-Punch Man season 3 is releasing in October 2025. Given that most fall releases drop in the first week of October, we'd expect One-Punch Man to follow suit. However, we're still waiting on an actual date to be confirmed. Either way, it's been a long time coming. The first season debuted way back in 2015, while the second season aired in 2019. In other words, we've spent over half a decade waiting for the One-Punch Man season 3 release date to surface. Now, we're only months away from Saitama's return. One-Punch Man season 3 will continue the Monster Association arc from Yusuke Marata's manga, which sees the Monster Association arrive at the Hero Association with a message about wanting monsters and heroes to co-exist – something which quickly turns around to be a ruse. Instead, the Monster Association wants an all-out war between heroes and monsters, led by Orochi and Gyoro. Also in season 2, hero hunter Garou is confronted by various heroes wanting to prove their worth to the Hero Association – including Death Gatling. It leads to a fight between Saitama's protege Genos and Garou, with the latter being saved by the Monster Association's Phoenix Man. Inevitably, Saitama – having been sidetracked by attempting to best King at video games – comes and saves the day. He kills the monster Elder Centipede and remarks that a despondent Genos needs "power" to improve as a hero. So, that's where we're at. What's next for One-Punch Man season 3? If you're following along in the manga, we're starting from chapter 86. To confirm our speculations, the official One-Punch Man social media accounts dropped the first two 'Mysterious Being' visuals in early April. These featured Monster King Orochi and Gyoro-Gyoro. So yeah, the Monster Association is basically confirmed at this point. A season of One-Punch Man typically covers around 40-50 chapters of the source material. If that's the case again, we could expect this season to end around chapter 123 – and the debut of a character known as Psykos (to say any more would be a significant spoiler…) Until then, expect the perpetually bored Saitama to continue fighting monsters alongside his fellow heroes and Garou to spend more time with the Monster Association as an all-out war ensues. Society's reaction to the monsters differs, with one splinter group – The Monster Worship Party – submitting itself to the monsters. The new One-Punch Man season 3 trailer, which you can watch above, shows Saitama flanked by a series of lower-ranked (but no less formidable) heroes as they face down the Monster Association. The clip isn't super heavy on action, and we don't see any massive fights just yet, but it does end with Saitama promising to punch Garou. The music in the teaser is pretty killer as well, so definitely check it out if you want to get hyped for season 3! The One-Punch Man season 3 cast has mostly been confirmed thanks to its latest trailer. They include Saitama (Makoto Furakawa), Genos (Kaito Ishikawa), Garou (Hikaru Midorikawa), King (Hiroki Yasumoto), and the Monster Association's Gyoro Gyoro (Takehito Koyasu). Other characters include Terrible Tornado (Aoi Yuki), Silverfang (Kazuhiro Yamaji), Atomic Samurai (Kenjiro Tsuda), Child Emperor (Minami Takayama), and Zombieman (Takahiro Sakurai). The J.C. Staff studio are back on animated duties too. As of November 2024, the official One-Punch Man Twitter account has also unveiled season 3 art for the characters Atomic Samurai and Zombieman from season 3 character designer Ryosuke Shirokawa. You can see them for yourself below. Like the first two seasons, One-Punch Man season 3 will be streaming on Crunchyroll but, as of writing, it's only been confirmed in the UK, Ireland, and Europe. US fans can likely expect the series to also be available on Hulu (just like the other seasons). Again, though, currently this is just speculation on our part. We'll keep you posted as we wait for more information. We do know that the leading manga and anime platform Viz Media has acquired the rights to One-Punch Man season 3 across North America, Latin America and Oceania (via Variety). "Additional details regarding streaming availability in VIZ Media territories will be announced in the coming weeks," they announced on May 27. In the meantime, check out our list of the best Crunchyroll anime if you're looking for something new to watch. 'Like cattle, no food for 16 hours': Newlywed woman, held for 140 days, recalls US detention horror
A newly wedded bride from the US state of Texas who was released from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody on Thursday has said she was treated like "cattle" during her detention. Ward Sakeik , a stateless Palestinian woman married to a US citizen, was detained in February on the way back from her honeymoon. She was released by the immigration detention after more than four months of confinement. Ward spoke publicly for the first time since being detained at a Miami airport in February. She had been held in ICE custody for 140 days after returning from her honeymoon. After arriving back from the US Virgin Islands with her husband Taahir Shaikh, Sakeik said, "I was put in a gray tracksuit and shackles immediately," during a press conference held in Dallas-Fort Worth. "I was handcuffed for 16 hours without any water or food on the bus. I was moved around like cattle," Sakeik added. 'I was overfilled with joy and a little shock,' she said at a press conference on Thursday. 'I mean, it was my first time seeing a tree in five months.' The US government tried to dump me in a part of the world where I had no idea where I was going, what I was doing," WSWS quoted Sakeik as saying. Live Events She ran to her husband, who had come to pick her up. 'I was like, oh my God, I can touch him without handcuffs and without a glass. It was just freedom.' "Any claim that there is a lack of food or subprime conditions at ICE detention centers are false," Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin told Newsweek. "All detainees are provided with proper meals, medical treatment, and have opportunities to communicate with their family members and lawyers. Ensuring the safety, security, and well-being of individuals in our custody is a top priority at ICE. Meals are certified by dietitians." ICE attempted to deport Ward Sakeik The development comes at a time when President Donald Trump has pledged to carry out the largest mass deportation operation in US history, and in the initial months of his second term, his administration has deported more than 100,000 people. Anyone living in the country without legal status is considered a "criminal," the White House has said. The first time, she was told she was being taken to the Israel border – just as Israel launched airstrikes on Iran, reported The Guardian. The second time, Sakeik was told once again she would be deported – despite a judge's order barring her removal from her home state of Texas. Her legal team said at around 5 a.m. CT on Monday, Sakeik was woken by guards and told to prepare to leave the facility immediately, according to the legal team, in what was the second attempt by ICE to deport Sakeik unlawfully. "These deportations, they just happened all of a sudden—I was not given a phone call," Sakeik said at the press conference. She added that she was able to call her husband, but "a phone call was not provided to me from ICE." "I just had to wait and take a very, very long time to pack my stuff to just buy time to wait for the phone system to work to call Taahir," she said. "I have been a law-abiding resident of the United States since I was 8 years old. I went to college. I run a successful wedding photography business here in [Dallas-Fort Worth]," she said. Around the time of her January wedding, Sakeik applied for a green card and cleared the initial stage of the process. Due to her immigration status, she and her husband chose to honeymoon in the U.S. Virgin Islands to avoid the risks of international travel. Despite her pending green card application and documentation outlining her complex immigration history, Sakeik was detained. Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin told NewsWeek, "Ward Sakeik was not 'complying with immigration policies.' The facts are she is in our country illegally." "Ensuring the safety, security, and well-being of individuals in our custody is a top priority at ICE. Why does the media continue to fall for the sob stories of illegal aliens in detention and villainize ICE law enforcement? "She overstayed her visa and has had a final order by an immigration judge for over a decade. President Trump and [Homeland] Secretary [Kristi] Noem are committed to restoring integrity to the visa program and ensuring it is not abused to allow aliens a permanent one-way ticket to remain in the U.S."

As Japan's manga earthquake 'prophecy' sparks panic, authorities warn of more strong tremors ahead
Japan's remote Tokara Island experienced more than 900 earthquakes in the past two weeks, according to the country's weather agency, leaving residents unable to sleep and fearful of what might come next. The series of earthquakes in Japan along with a major eruption from a long-dormant volcano, has further fuelled speculation about a disaster striking Japan on July 5. The government of Japan has warned of more possible earthquakes in waters southwest of its main islands, reported news agency Reuters, urging the people not to believe unfounded predictions of a major disaster. Amid the increasing frequency of earthquakes, a comic book prediction has been fuelling speculations of a 'deadly earthquake" in Japan. The manga novel predicted that a mega earthquake would hit Japan on July 5. The 2021 reprint of 'The Future I Saw' by Ryo Tatsuki, a retired manga artist who is also known as the "New Baba Vanga", warns that a "huge" tsunami will wash over countries in the Pacific Ocean. The retired manga warned that a "huge tsunami" three times the size' of the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake will wash over countries in the Pacific Ocean. The first edition of the manga, published in 1999, had referred to a 'great disaster' in March 2011 that coincided with the earthquake that killed more than 18,000 people and caused the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant disaster, according to The Times. Check official teaser Live Events Japan rattled by earthquakes Tokara Islands in Japan's Kagoshima prefecture have witnessed more than 1000 tremors in the past two weeks, with the earthquake on Thursday (July 3) being so strong that people faced difficulty standing. This quake on Thursday stemmed from a comic book prediction that a major disaster would befall the country this month. Seismic activity was "very active" in the seas around the Tokara islands since 21 June. "It's very scary to even fall asleep," one resident told the regional broadcaster MBC. "It feels like it's always shaking." The Tokara area has experienced clusters of earthquakes in the past but the frequency of the most recent tremors has been unusual, according to local media. Japan is one of the most seismically active nations on Earth, owing to its location on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, where many tectonic plates meet. It experiences about 1,500 earthquakes each year. "With our current scientific knowledge, it's difficult to predict the exact time, place or scale of an earthquake," said Ayataka Ebita, director of the Japan Meteorological Agency's earthquake and tsunami monitoring division, after a 5.4-magnitude quake shook the area again on Saturday. "We ask that people base their understanding on scientific evidence," Ebita told a press conference. Japan sees drop in tourists A manga believed by some to predict a major disaster on an upcoming Saturday has sparked fear among travelers, with some choosing to steer clear of Japan. The rumors, which gained particular traction in Hong Kong, appear to have impacted tourism—visitor numbers from Hong Kong dropped 11% in May compared to the same month last year, according to recent data. ALSO READ: Names of camp mystic girls missing from Texas after devastating flooding emerge, more rainfall expected Despite this dip, Japan has seen a surge in overall tourism, with April breaking records by welcoming 3.9 million visitors in a single month. The source of the speculation is The Future I Saw, a manga originally published in 1999 and re-released in 2021. Its creator, Ryo Tatsuki, addressed the buzz through a statement from her publisher, clarifying, 'I am not a prophet.' Japan, situated in one of the world's most seismically active zones, regularly experiences earthquakes. The country accounts for roughly 20% of all magnitude 6 or higher quakes worldwide.
