Belinda's ‘Heterocomía' won't generate much revenue — but the catharsis was worth it
Mexican superstar Belinda knew she wouldn't generate much revenue from her viral song 'Heterocomía.' She did it anyway. In an interview with CNN en Español, the singer revealed that she brokered a costly deal with Disney to secure the rights to the theme from the 1970 animated film 'The Aristocats.' 'I don't think I will see those royalties, ever' said Belinda in the interview with Juan Carlos Arciniegas. 'But it was worth it.' She put her own spin on a 20-second sound bite from the film's original soundtrack, and used it to kick off her track 'Heterocomía' which was released earlier this summer as part of her comeback fifth studio album, 'Indómita.' '[The Aristocats] is a classic,' said Belinda. 'And I imagined that introduction because it's the vibe of the song.' The Spanish-born singer, who is also of French descent, didn't stick to the original lyrics sung by Maurice Chevalier. Instead, she added her own flare, puffing up the bourgeois frippery of the original song to meet this modern moment: 'Which cats wear Loro Piana? What cats only play golf? Which cats drink Aperol? Naturellement, the Aristocats.' The song's fairy-tale introduction quickly devolves into a gloomier tale riddled with deception — and the culminating moment of realization that she had been fooled by a two-faced lover. 'I obsess over the intros in songs and that they sound one way and then completely break off into another song,' said Belinda. Following the release of her fifth studio album, Belinda drew attention to these lyrics with a homemade TikTok dance video, which has amassed more than 14 million views since its upload on June 8. Many online fans began to speculate that the song hinted at Belinda's past romantic relationship with Gonzalo Hevia Baillères, a billionaire heir whose family owns El Palacio de Hierro, Mexico City's upscale department store and made their fortune mining the country. Hevia Baillères has heterochromia, a condition in which one's eyes are two different colors. It is also the namesake for this seething track. Belinda has not confirmed the validity of these comparisons to the public, but the song's scorching lyrics might provide some insight: 'You are old money, they call you Bunny, and I'll pass your palace through my booty.' So while Disney may keep a majority of the royalties from the song, it looks like Belinda is walking away with something that money can't buy: sweet revenge.

Forgotten Disney Classics That Deserve More Love
When Disney is at its peak, it is easy to understand that certain movies will slip through the cracks in terms of being adored by the masses. On the always lively subreddit r/Askreddit, Reddit user u/mevin_ asked: What is the most underrated Disney film? The answers revealed that people have been overlooking many great films: "The Aristocats is the most underrated, of course. Everybody wants to be a cat." "I have a soft spot for The Black Cauldron. While not being objectively great, it does have an unbeatable '80s dark fantasy vibe that I love." "Tarzan. The music absolutely slaps." "The Rescuers and The Rescuers Down Under: A pair of adventures overshadowed by movies that followed." "I'm old. Fantasia." "I would say Treasure Planet." "Disney's The Kid starring Bruce Willis and Spencer Breslin. Hilarious." "The Hunchback of Notre Dame has my fave song ('Out There'), best villain and best villain song ('Hellfire'). Very underrated movie." "I don't know if it is considered underrated, but the one I enjoyed the most with my kids was The Jungle Book." "I loved The Lion King II: Simba's Pride! I saw it so many times as a kid. But I do wonder what I would've thought of it if I'd seen it for the first time as an adult." "Brother Bear is also very underrated!! Peak movie" "Honestly, I think the most underrated Disney film is The Emperor's New Groove. It's so funny and has such a unique style, but it doesn't get as much love as the classics." "Meet the Robinsons." "Honorable mention goes to Cinderella III: A Twist in Time. It took a lot of crap DTV sequels to get there, but by god was it worth it. Please watch this movie if you haven't, it's unironically the best DTV sequel in Disney history by a mile, and is better than some of their actual theatrical releases." "Atlantis: The Lost Empire. I miss Jim Varney." "Tomorrowland. It's a film for our times, but because the teenage lead is female, it didn't receive as much promotion or advertising as it would have if the lead had been male. George Clooney and Hugh Laurie are in excellent supporting roles, and there's a young female robot who gets to kick butt and be sarcastic. I always cry over the end, but also feel optimistic about the future, basically the only movie that makes me feel some optimism about the future." "Oliver & Company." "Bedknobs and Broomsticks." "Hercules has got the best songs ever!" "Invincible." "Babes in Toyland." "The Fox and the Hound." "The Great Mouse Detective." "The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea." "A Bugs Life. 🐛" "Flight of the Navigator (1986)" "The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh." And finally, "Cool Runnings!" Which Disney movie do you think is criminally underrated? Scientists unlock the hidden gene behind ginger cats' orange fur and what it means for their future
Source: BBC Ginger cats are an enduring fascination of the public, from Garfield to Puss in Boots to the much sought-after Toulouse from The Aristocats. Their orange coats and unique personalities have turned them into icons of popular culture. Scientists have now at last discovered a mystery that has lain hidden for decades regarding what makes these cats orange. Recent research by researchers in the United States and Japan has made major contributions to understanding the genetic processes that produce the distinctive fur color of ginger cats, specifically males. The discovery of the genetics of ginger cats is not only an intellectual victory—it's a tribute to the way science and enthusiasm for animals can merge. As scientists explore the genetics of domestic cats, it not only has the potential to reveal more about the health of our beloved pets but also to help us understand better the interplay between genetics, health, and behaviour. Scientists find the gene behind ginger cats' orange colour For decades, it was established that genes were responsible for ginger cats' orange coloration, but just what aspect of their genome was involved remained a mystery. Now, two teams of scientists—one at Kyushu University in Japan and the other at Stanford University in the United States—have simultaneously published their findings. Their research reveals a significant discovery: ginger cats are missing a specific section of their genetic code, which causes their cells to produce lighter pigments in their skin, eyes, and fur. This genetic anomaly impacts the melanocytes, the cells responsible for pigmentation. The secret to this finding is the ARHGAP36 gene, which is most active in the cells that influence skin, fur, and eye pigmentation. In their study, the researchers determined that ginger cats lack a portion in the DNA sequence of this gene. Under normal circumstances, this gene would inhibit activity, but without this DNA segment, the gene itself stays active, stimulating the production of light-colored pigments. In their study, the scientists compared the DNA of cats with ginger fur to those without. This comparison revealed that the missing DNA segment within the ARHGAP36 gene plays a crucial role in producing the distinctive orange color of ginger cats. This finding not only explains the phenomenon of ginger fur, but it also represents a major breakthrough in understanding feline genetics. Why are most ginger cat's male Yet another age-old observation regarding ginger cats is that they are predominantly males. The new research identifies a genetic explanation for this fact. The gene ARHGAP36, which is responsible for the ginger coat color, is on the X chromosome. Male cats, like all mammals, have one Y and one X chromosome, whereas females have two X chromosomes. For males, only one missing piece of DNA on the X chromosome is sufficient to create a complete orange coat. Female cats need to have the genetic mutation on both their X chromosomes in order to express the same extent of pigmentation and therefore fully orange female cats are much less common. Even more impressive about this finding is its beginnings. The lead researcher was Professor Hiroyuki Sasaki, a retired geneticist and dogged feline enthusiast. Even after retiring from his university position, Sasaki was determined to unlock the genetic code of the ginger cats. Funded by thousands of like-minded cat fans across the globe, Sasaki attracted more than 10 million yen (£55,109) through crowdfunding to carry out the research. The project touched the hearts of cat enthusiasts, some who even contributed their pocket money to help with the project. Understanding the ARHGAP36 gene and its connection to ginger cats and health Whereas the breakthrough centers on pigmentation, the ARHGAP36 gene also has an important function in other areas of the body, such as the brain and hormone glands. This leaves open the potential that the genetic mutation leading to ginger coloring might have implications for overall feline behavior and well-being. While there is no scientific research yet to connect coat color with personality, some scientists, such as Sasaki, are fascinated by the possibility of a link and intend to explore further. Besides its applicability to cats, the ARHGAP36 gene has also been associated with skin cancer and baldness in humans. This is a testament to the possibility of the study having applications to human health as well. The identification of the genetic basis of ginger cats' coat color is a major breakthrough in genetics. It not only answers a decades-old mystery but also creates new opportunities for researching the health and temperament of cats. The research will likely lead to more, and possibly feline- and human-beneficial, studies. As genetic research in animals keeps reaching new heights, researchers could also discover more surprises regarding the contribution of individual genes to physical features and health. Thanks to the cooperation of a committed worldwide network of cat enthusiasts, these advances might also lead to improved disease understanding and treatment in cats. Disney is pulling back on trigger warnings for old movies
Disney (DIS) is overhauling how it warns users on its streaming platform of older films that contain racial stereotypes. Starting in 2020, Disney+ would autoplay disclaimers before movies such as Dumbo, Peter Pan, The Aristocats, warning of 'negative depictions and/or mistreatment of people or cultures' and that 'these stereotypes were wrong then and are wrong now.' Disney has now decided to do away with these warnings. Instead, the company will now include a text disclaimer in the details section of the films that says these movies 'may contain stereotypes or negative depictions,' according to a note sent to employees on Wednesday, Axios reported. Disney did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Quartz. The move is part of a broader effort at the House of Mouse to change its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts, amid the Trump Administration's targeting of DEI programs in the government. In addition to the adjusted content warnings, Disney is replacing its 'Diversity & Inclusion' performance factor when evaluating executive compensation. The new 'Talent Strategy' factor will instead absorb some criteria from the previous factor but focus more on values that drive business. Disney is not alone in unwinding its DEI efforts; several companies have announced changes to their diversity programs in the wake of the President Donald Trump's inauguration. Facebook-parent Meta (META), Google, and Walmart have all said they are scaling back their DEI programs. 'We're in the middle of a pretty rapidly changing policy and regulatory landscape that views any policy that might advantage any one group of people over another as something that is unlawful,' Meta CEO Mark Zuckerburg told employees in a meeting last month. 'Because of that, we and every other institution out there are going to need to adjust.' Conversely, some companies have said they will be sticking with their DEI programs including Costco and McDonalds. For the latest news, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
