James Gunn Wants To Bring 'Color And Joy' Back To ‘Superman': 'In Some Ways, It's Lighter'
It's a bird! It's a plane! It's James Gunn's DCU taking shape with the debut of his take on Superman. On the red carpet of Monday's world premiere, the writer and director told Deadline how he took a 'lighter' approach to the DC Comics superhero that gets back to 'the color and the joy' of his origins. More from Deadline James Gunn Says 'Superman' Is An 'Immigrant' Story About 'Basic Human Kindness' 'Superman' World Premiere: The Best Of The Red Carpet James Gunn Confirms Matt Reeves' 'The Batman II' Script Is Finished: "It's Great" 'In some ways, it's lighter. But there's a lot of heavy stuff in the movie as well,' explained Gunn, following Zack Snyder's grittier take on the role in Man of Steel (2013), Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) and Justice League (2017). 'But the character himself is lighter.' The DC Studios boss called Clark Kent 'that rarity of rarities,' explaining that 'he's from a non-dysfunctional family, he has parents who love him, he's growing up in a loving household with support and emotional presence from his parents, and he's the result of that. And I think that he's a pretty well-adjusted guy because of that. However, he has his flaws as well.' Gunn added, 'But I loved the color and the joy of the comic books I loved growing up, and I wanted to imbue this film with that feeling.' Since taking over DC Studios with Peter Safran in 2022, Gunn has been hard at work directing Superman, which kicks off his new DCU franchise with the 'Gods and Monsters' phase. In theaters July 11, Superman stars David Corenswet in the titular role. In addition to Rachel Brosnahan as Lois, the cast also includes Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor and María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer, as well as Skyler Gisondo, Sara Sampaio, Sean Gunn, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Isabel Merced and Nathan Fillion as some familiar DC faces. Whoopi Goldberg Praises New ‘Superman': 'I Forgot What Kindness Looked Like'
While Fox News hosts, Dean Cain and right-wing commenters are decrying James Gunn's new Superman as 'woke,' The View's Whoopi Goldberg praised the movie's kinder, gentler take. With the film's stars David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan visiting the ABC talk show today, Goldberg spoke about her reaction to seeing a screening of the movie. Although neither she nor the guests directly addressed the MAGA backlash, Goldberg and Corenswet applauded Gunn's approach. And what it was was I forgot what kindness looked like, and I kept waiting for Superman to become quippy, and he's not that. He's never been that. 'So I fell in love with you as Superman. Chris Reeve was a friend, and so [the new movie] allowed me to just kind of question myself. Why didn't I recognize the kindness? I was waiting for you to turn into somebody you had never been. I know it sounds crazy, but it knocked for a loop because I thought, Oh, that's right. He's nice and he's kind and he's different.' Asked by Goldberg what he hopes people take away from the film, Corenswet, who plays the title character, said, 'It might be too much to ask, but just what you described about looking inward and wondering, Is there something more I could be doing? Could I be a little kinder to people? Could I take a little more responsibility for myself, my family, my loved ones? Could I be somebody who shows up in a moment of crisis or uncertainty and say, I'll take care of this situation.' The Superman kerfuffle started when Gunn told The Times U.K., 'I mean, Superman is the story of America. An immigrant that came from other places and populated the country, but for me it is mostly a story that says basic human kindness is a value and is something we have lost.' The comment drew ire (real or performative) from some conservatives. Fox News host Greg Gutfeld said the superhero has 'a woke shield,' and Laura Ingraham tweeted, 'Another film we won't be seeing.' Donald Trump supporter and Lois & Clark Superman Dean Cain told TMZ, 'How woke is Hollywood going to make this character? How much is Disney going to change their Snow White? Why are they going to change these characters [to] exist for the times?' The Warner Bros. film, which opens in the U.S. on July 11, currently has an 85% certified fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and is expected to see a $200M global start at 60,000 global screens. The Batman II: James Gunn shares update on Matt Reeves' Final Script for Robert Pattinson's Film, ‘It's Great'
The Batman II is one of the highly anticipated DC films. As the fans wait to see Robert Pattinson in action again as Batman, James Gunn has dropped an update about the script. Previously, the director, Matt Reeves, announced on his social media that the script for the second part of the trilogy was complete and that he had penned the dialogs alongside Mattson Tomlin. In the new update, the head of the DC Studios praised Reeves and Tomlin's penned version of the film. After the writer-director duo dropped a picture of the final script on their Instagram, Gunn went on to say, 'Its Great.' The caption of the post read, 'Partners in Crime (Fighters).' Everything we know about The Batman II According to the reports from Deadline, the sequel to the 2022 film was announced a month after the original film was released in theaters. Meanwhile, the updates on the new script come weeks after James Gunn asked the audience to be patient. In conversation with Entertainment Weekly, the Superman director stated, 'Listen, we're supposed to get a script in June. I hope that happens. We feel really good about it.' Gunn further added, 'People should get off Matt's nuts because it's like, let the guy write the screenplay in the amount of time he needs to write it. That's just the way it is. He doesn't owe you something because you like his movie. I mean, you like his movie because of Matt. So let Matt do things the way he does.' The filmmaker continued to say that he is irritated by the people constantly bugging the makers. Gunn claimed at the time that the movie will come out when he feels good about it. As for the plot of the upcoming film, the crew has kept it under wraps. However, it was announced that Pattinson will return to play the lead role. Other cast members joining the Mickey 17 actor in the DC movie are Paul Dano, Zoë Kravitz, Colin Farrell, Jeffrey Wright, and Andy Serkis. The Batman II is scheduled to release in theaters on October 1, 2027.

Director Matt Reeves completes Batman 2 script
Washington DC [US], July 1 (ANI): Director Matt Reeves and writer Mattson Tomlin have completed their script for 'The Batman II', more than three years after the first film starring Robert Pattinson came out in theatres, reported Deadline. Taking to their Instagram handle, the pair shared a blurred black and white photo of the script with a bat on the cover, under which the fuzzy title seems to say 'The Batman: Part II.' Reeves captioned the post, which is a collab share with co-writer Tomlin, "Partners in Crime (Fighters)." He also tweeted the photo and tagged Tomlin. The caption cleverly alludes to Robin, who did not appear in the first film. According to Deadline, the sequel was first announced in April 2022 on the heels of the first film's March 4 theatrical release, which also starred Colin Farrell as Oz the Penguin, Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle, Jeffrey Wright as Lt. James Cordon, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, Paul Dano as The Riddler, Andy Serkis as Alfred and more. This news of the script's completion comes just ahead of the arrival of James Gunn and Peter Safran's Superman, which will herald in the new DC universe, reported Deadline. Earlier, James Gunn responded to fans' complaints online about the delay of the script, telling them to be patient, in his own style. "Listen, we're supposed to get a script in June," he told Entertainment Weekly as quoted by Deadline. "I hope that happens. We feel really good about it. Matt's excited. I talk to Matt all the time. I'm totally excited about it. So we can't wait to read the scripts, but we haven't read it yet, if that's your question," reported Deadline. "People should get off Matt's because it's like, let the guy write the screenplay in the amount of time he needs to write it. That's just the way it is. He doesn't owe you something because you like his movie. I mean, you like his movie because of Matt. So let Matt do things the way he does," said James Gunn as quoted by Deadline. 'The Batman: Part II' will arrive in theatres on October 1, 2027. Reeves first film made 369.3M USD domestically and 772M USD worldwide at the box office. (ANI)
