Glasgow Men's 10k runners raise thousands for Beatson
Ryan McGlinchey, Colin Mackenzie, and David Wynne took on the Glasgow Men's 10k to raise funds for the Beatson Cancer Charity. For David, the cause is particularly personal as he now volunteers weekly at The Beatson after undergoing treatment for testicular cancer. The friends raised more than £11,000 (Image: Beatson Cancer Charity) The trio originally set a fundraising target of £5,000, but more than doubled their goal thanks to the generosity of their community. David said: "It was never about the money – it was about the three of us doing something we never thought we could do. "But as the donations kept coming in, it pushed us to keep going. "At one point I was struggling during the run and thinking of stopping, but I remembered everyone who donated and thought, 'No way I'm giving up now.'' A special raffle organised by the trio raised an additional £1,200, thanks to prizes donated by their friend John McNaught. David, who volunteers with Beatson Cancer Charity every Wednesday, added: "Volunteering at The Beatson every week, I see exactly where the money goes – and I know how much it matters. "We just want to say a massive thank you to everyone who donated – whether it was £5 or £500 – every single contribution meant the world to us.' The friends are now considering making the Men's 10k an annual tradition. Ryan said: 'One of our friends ran the 10k last year in memory of his twin brother, and shortly after that, someone very close to me and Connor sadly passed away from cancer. "I just knew I wanted to do something. I called Connor straight away and he was up for it. "Then we spoke to Davie, and it all came together from there.' Evonne Flisch, challenges fundraiser at Beatson Cancer Charity, said: "We are incredibly grateful to Ryan, Connor, and David for taking on the Glasgow Men's 10k in memory of their loved one and raising such an outstanding amount." Hundreds of schoolkids rock out to AC/DC to support a teacher about to undergo lifesaving brain surgery

Julie was recently reunited with metalhead Roddy as he visited Cathedral Primary in Motherwell and bonded with guitar-loving kids. Paying tribute to youngsters' role in her recovery, Julie said: 'When I saw the video, I was overwhelmed. Their energy, their joy. It lifted me. 'I truly felt their love.I believe their prayers and positivity helped carry me through.' Mum-of-three Julie had suffered a seizure while driving and crashed into a roundabout — awaking to find herself surrounded by paramedics. She was rushed to Wishaw University Hospital where scans revealed a brain tumour. While awaiting surgery last April she formed a bond with top neurosurgeon Roddy. She recalled: 'I immediately felt safe in his care. 'Even though I was receiving devastating news, I felt an odd sense of clarity, like life was giving me a wake-up call. 'I started to feel lucky the tumour had been found and that I had a chance to fight it.' She told pupils how Roddy liked to listen to rock legends on full blast before entering the operating theatre. On the day of Julie's surgery, 600 kids gathered to record their special clip. They turned their assembly hall into a massive moshpit and chanted 'Thunder' in unison, just like at the start of AC/DC's 1990 anthem. 6 Julie after the surgery, which removed 95 per cent of the stage 4 cancerous tumour 6 Surgeon Roddy has always rocked out to the song to get him in the zone before carrying out surgery on his patients 6 Julie with her kids (L-R) Nina, 14, Rory, 18, and Carlina, 18. Julie loved watching the clip as she recovered at Glasgow's Queen Elizabeth University Hospital. The kids then repeated the performance when Roddy joined Julie at the primary. He is a long-term fan of the band who were founded by Glasgow-born Angus Young, 70, and late brother Malcolm. He revealed: 'When Julie showed me the video of the kids rocking out, I was nearly in tears. Who knows, maybe we've inspired a few future neurosurgeons.' Julie has now left her post after 25 years. She said: 'This school has been my life. I trained here, my three children went here. I've watched so many pupils grow and thrive. 'I'm deeply thankful to the staff, the children, and my medical team at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital and The Beatson. 'Roddy and the entire team were phenomenal.' Head teacher Graeme Young said: 'The children light up when Julie is around.'

Glasgow woman reflects on volunteering with The Beatson
Chloe Jebb, who is originally from Maryhill, started volunteering for the Beatson Cancer Charity over a year ago after doing some fundraising for them. She is now a regular face at community events, helps with bucket collections, and even lends a hand at the Beatson Cafe. (Image: Beatson Cancer Charity) Chloe, who now lives in Uddingston, said: "I just look out for the newsletter that comes through with all the opportunities, and whatever I've got time to do, I chip in and help. "We did TRNSMT last year, which was really fun, and I do a bit of volunteering in the cafe too." She said: "The Beatson has helped my family a lot over the years. (Image: Beatson Cancer Charity) "My grandad was supported by The Beatson when he was still with us, and my gran is currently an outpatient. "I'm so grateful for everything they've done for us." Encouraging others to consider volunteering, especially during Volunteers' Week, she added: "If you've never volunteered with a charity before, The Beatson is a really good one to get involved with. "Just knowing that by giving your time, you're helping people in need—it's so rewarding. "I'm really proud to be a part of it." The Beatson Cancer Charity relies heavily on the work of more than 560 volunteers. Marlyn Hosie, volunteer manager at Beatson Cancer Charity, said: "We are so grateful to each and every one of our volunteers, like Chloe, who gift their time to help make a real difference in people's lives. "Their kindness, energy, and commitment are at the heart of everything we do. "Happy Volunteers' Week all."
